(This is Mel). I find him to be the most transparent among the stars. (Lilly King is very open as well, let's you know exactly where she stands on topics.) I always ask swimmers if there are any topics they don't want to cover. Sometimes a death in the family or a coaching decision is off limits for subjects. Dressel always says ask me anything.

The way how Caeleb described Tokyo's men's medley relay reminded me of the 2004 medley relay and how their individual races went. Hansen was out-touched by Kitajima, Crocker had a pedestrian time in the 4x100 free and was beaten by MP in the 100 fly, Lezak didn't even made the 100 free final, and Peirsol was the only individual gold medalist. Despite their substandard individual performances, they've put all of that behind them and not only swam a gold medal-winning relay, but also smashed the world record.

Caeleb unplugged... honest, direct, straightforward... candid... no pretenses and no B.S. This may be the finest interview Dressel has given to this point.

This was an incredible interview. I'm a swimming fan, never a competitive swimmer although an athlete in a different sport, and I appreciate hearing an interview from a swim outlet that's far more technical and focused than the morning talk shows, who gush over him with no meat to the content, but that's also really accessible for people who didn't spend their youth hanging out in chlorine. Awesome interview!

Lydia swam fine in the mixed medley. Caeleb nailed it ... you have to put a guy on breaststroke because of the time differential.

Great interview. Well done, Mel. Probably the best swimming interview I’ve seen. Mel was a great swimmer and knows the sport and the swimmers well. For those of us who have left our blood, sweat, and tears (and urine for some of us when we were younger) in the pool, these are the questions we want to hear in an interview.

Not sure how I'm just seeing this today! This was a home run Mel.. Caeleb is so down to earth. I really appreciated his honesty on the 4x200 and overall really. AND the confidence about knowing USA would win gold in the medley relay. Thanks.

This is Mel, and that's nice of you to say. NBC always uses their in-house people for the sideline. My opinion? Each swimming nation and their network broadcast should have a team of 6 people (all swimmers or swammers) that cover Worlds and the Olympics. Those 6 people should do no more than three Olympic Games, and they should be staggered by age---so you're always pulling in someone new for each Olympic, someone in their 20s or early 30s---swimmers with a fresh point of view. I want raw analysis from young people. Frankly, I'd like a non-elite that's like 21 years old on the team weighing-in, someone who thinks exactly like the fans that tune in to watch. That's a very big hole in network broadcasting. In the age of youtube, younger voices get to the point faster and entertain.

@@SwimSwamTV Just pull some swim nerds in college to do it and I bet they'd do great lol.
Honestly I do believe that - don't get me wrong I love Rowdy and Dan - but it'd be nice to hear some different analysis. We don't hear a lot of the post-race analysis that goes down, which to us swim fans is sometimes very nice know.

....yeah....my Olympic peers (this Mel again) had a lot to saw about the relays. And they were all right on some level (and most of them mirrored the endless comments in SwimSwam's comment section. Some days we have 5000+ comments). I strive to remember that the inner-workings of decisions during the Olympics include a lot of factors the coaches don't always control... Still, the US made mistakes. Team USA will learn from them. In my opinion mistake are really what make the Olympic interesting, dramatic. It's human. We all make mistake and have to adjust fast to reach a better outcome. (Wow, can't wait for 2022 World Champs! They'll be in faster than you think!!!!)

We'll talk with him. He's been a pro since he was 14. He's recharging his batteries.... My biggest question is if he'll continue to focus on his 200 IM. He made noises about focusing on some other races, but I think MA can break the world record in the 200 IM. I think he can sprint the fly, back, breast, and do the training to close in the free fast... What would you ask him?
