  • During my most recent leave in Victoria, Mum and I decided on a little day trip to Tarnagulla from Bendigo (about 45kms) on the 18th of April. After a quick visit to Bridgewater, we popped over to Tarnagulla for a walk down memory lane.
While there, we came upon two of the locals. Adam and Kelly. Adam was busy preparing his old bus/coach for upcoming travels, while Kelly was practising her barista skills while producing by far the best coffee in Tarnagulla! They told us to get the word out that Tarnagulla is definitely open for business, so here's my short but sweet effort to win attention for dear old Tarnagulla.
Many thanks to Adam and Kelly for their hospitality and friendship!

Lovely to hear your voice again Shane and to catch a glimpse of your mother! I too dive through Tarnagulla recently but didn’t stop to walk the main street , as I was running out of time. Cheers SJ.

mariandunne2020 you might be able to get hold of a copy of the Tarnagulla Times through the State Library of Vic, or the National Library in Canberra.

It is a sad town with so much potential that to me when we have stopped many times, the locals just do not care anymore. So many buildings on the Main Street could be better maintained, painted, even swept. We once looked at buying a marvellously restored old church there in a back street (not the burnt one) about ten years ago.

I think my great great grandfather built the first hotel and bred race horses. He lived in a house on the corner of the
Bet Bet and Loddon rivers. He was buried at the cemetery but I haven’t been able to find his grave. I once saw a tribute to him after his death in the Tarnagulla times I think in 1863. I would love to explore this further.

Thanks. Do you know how to find a copy of the Tarnagulla Times 1863 or who would know? Thanks Marian

I'm sorry, I don't know, Marian. But if you get in contact with the Tarnagulla Facebook page, they may be able to help you 😊

Shane, it's a shame on this trip you didn't find "The Pebble House" if you liked Bell's Cottage (built in 1937 by WW1 veteran Herbert Bell, who carried each stone home on his bicycle every day from his mining job, until he left to also serve in WW2. Herbert is buried near his beloved little cottage in the cemetery next door, the grave is on the right side as you go in the main front gate and along there, facing the road. Being a local paranormal investigator, I once jokingly asked him if I could buy or rent his cottage. I was recording for EVP's at the time and an older male's voice boomed out indignantly "No you may not!". I believe the cottage is still owned by a descendant of Herbert's and it is very flood prone since the road was built up more some years ago, causing that whole block to flood. I have seen it badly flooded a few times sadly, no drainage was ever put in by the council to divert the water, but the cottage has had some basic repairs done in the last ten years to secure the roof and fix up the rain tank, by volunteers having a working bee. The bits of wood dumped outside are from a small wooden single cot/bed which used to be fixed against a wall in the tiny sitting room and I suppose where Herbert Bell slept) - you can stay at The Pebble House for weekends, I'll post the link for the photos - built from thousands of river quartz pebbles decades ago. It is located over the railway line behind Bell's Cottage, other side of the bush and creek, Gladstone St/Tarnagulla Rd, heading towards Irish Town (nothing there now but private paddocks, was a tent town near Llanelly). Go past the golf course on the dirt road and it's on the right-hand side. Thanks for the video and taking an interest in our little ghost town from the gold rush era. It was a nice surprise to see our block briefly at 01:56, the burned brick chimneys the only remains from a bad fire around 1895, just one chimney left standing now which forms the kitchen hearth and still in use. There is a shabby miner's shack on the block now in what we call "Uptown Tarnagulla"! It stands over the Prince of Edinburgh Mine shafts of the Poverty Reef. :)

Hi, thanks for your input. Yeah, I'm going to have to get more serious with good old Tarnagulla. I've loved it since I was a kid, lots of family fun around there, along with Melville's Caves and other really interesting areas. Will have to check out the Pebble House, sounds great. So glad you enjoyed the video 😊👍
