It's really poetic how Sergeant Gross's monologue is directed with him staring into the camera. Isayama directed the anime staff to make it like that for the very precise reason. He is actually breaking the fourth wall (literally on the 'fourth wall') and speaking to the audience as well, about how we like to see cruelty and enjoy it. Which is exactly what transpires moments afterwards, almost everyone behaves the way he said. Exemplary stuff
Yeah, we almost all are like yeah you SOB, die, suffer etc. It really is a brilliant little trick, went over my head on first watch. I don't want Gross/Isayama to be right on this, but I suspect they are more right than wrong.
Plus I just thought about this but this whole situation is litteraly a fourth wall break for the series as a concept. The pitch for AoT is basically "Giants attack and eat humans who live inside walls". But here, we literally see the guy who sends them the Titans, all the while saying that he does what he does because it's interesting and that humans like to see cruelty. Very meta.
What you mentioned is a nice touch, but there is a big difference between our approval of cruelty as the audience and the Sergeant's. He is saying that people enjoy seeing cruelty in the context of him intentionally feeding an innocent 7(?) year old girl to dogs and the context of him saying this is to rationalise why he did it. As the audience, we are cheering for a child-murderer suffering a similar fate to his victim, yet unlike the Sergeant, we didn't inflict that upon him ourselves, obviously, and the cruelty-sufferer isn't innocent. I believe we talked about the irony of us cheering during the discussion, but for the reasons above we didn't find it particularly profound to be honest. Both cases involve "liking to see cruelty", yes, but the cases differ so strongly that the undertone of charging the audience with hypocrisy, or as being similar to the Sergeant, just fall pretty flat.
honestly really enjoying their watch through, have watched hundreds react but AidanandManuela are so quick thinking and understand the depth of the storytelling behind just the action and humour
Konnichiwa lads. People of culture... I think I like these couple 💑. They're witty enough to catch up with what the show is about. Love it. Fair play to you Aidan and Manuela. You guys are spot on with the IMPORTANT bits of the show. Now let's go next episode!!!
@@AidanAndManuela problem with other reactors... they're dumb enough to over think things instead of letting it flow. Making them lose track to what's important. AOT is very much DETAIL-DRIVEN show. Just pay attention to the details (which you guys are good at) and you'll then realise what you've just witnessed, and what it's about.
@@AidanAndManuela last tip, when you DON'T SEE the "to be continued" before the CLOSING song... THERE'S AN AFTER CREDIT SCENE TO FOLLOW. So try not to stop when that happens. Let's go WARRIORS!!!
the episode is so packed, that very few people manage to decipher all the reveals... the moment the owl's identity is being leaked, we are busy with Dina being turned into titan and realising it's the smiling titan. for those who get the owl's identity, they end up being blown away that he's the other titan holder.
Good catch on "Madagaskar". The AoT map is just our map, but turned upside down. And Paradis is indeed Madagaskar. Also, now that you know about it, maybe take a closer look at the background images of the title pages (like the one at 0:39)
I love the fact that most viewers spend 3 seasons shouting "I need answers! I need more information!" only to arrive at this episode shouting "that's too much information!" Lol.

19:13 nice catch! I don't know if I've seen anyone get that so quickly
The quick thinking Manuela
yes, but probably shouldn't have confirmed it
@@gogi-g6d It will be confirmed in the next episode, so doesn't really matter)
Well done Manuela!

HAJIME ISAYAMA IS A GENIUS.
Man, the Griesha voice actor GOES for it.
He is incredible, easy to forget how much the voice actors improve the show
I love how the lore drops hit just as hard as the action moments in this show
13:50 these are all titans we have seen before. the bearded one that ate eren at episode 5 is there too
From here forward is the time in the show, I'll really enjoy you guys examining the show with a philosophical lens.
Good work you two
