  • In this video, I drop and rebuild the Tomos A35 from the high mileage well loved Tomos I've been around for almost 10 years.
    This one was a challenge, I was working mostly solo on this engine and it was some hard learning, but - it starts!

    This video was a long time coming. Candidly, I usually like to do something once all the way through before I show it, but this video is me doing an A35 teardown and rebuild the first time.
    A lot of things go sideways here, the first crank bearing does not go into the cases cleanly, the cases don't close around the crank nicely at all, and I probably spent an hour trying to get the clutch spring installed in the first gear clutch. On top of that, I almost reassembled the transmission without a new sprag spring!
    Ultimately I decided to publish this video, even with my mistakes. The moped is now alive! And while there is some finagling we still need to do, I know with the right amount of perseverance it will get there. Thanks for watching friends.

    Its also a good Idea to soak the new clutch shoes in ATF overnight before installation. This helps saturate the cork to protect against dry contact when you first ride it.

    Thank you for making this video. I only found one video of someone taking the engine apart but it had zero sound and the view wasn’t the greatest. I just found a couple diagrams for it but still not the best ones out there and will he’s searching for a few more to print out. Your video is probably all I’ll need to finish rebuilding mine. It’s has the a35 engine that was seized. I got it lose and most of it apart but lost interest a couple years ago. Everything it still where I left it again your video will help me step by step to finish taking it apart and putting it back together. Thank you so much :)

      Heck yeah! Yeah there is an odd selection of Tomos videos available which is why I made this.
      Doing it over again I'd maybe put some heat on my cases to get them to go together smoother...wasn't the biggest fan of having the case bolts do all the work. Best of luck with your rebuild!

    Great rebuild video! I'm a fan of using my outdoor gas grill to heat the case halves after freezing bearings and crank in freezer although I need a couple oven mitts then and it's a 2 step process. 30 minutes at about 300F. Bearings and crank almost always drop right in like butta. Of course the case halves gasket is a pain and the connecting rod always wants to move to the wrong place when you put the last half on the crank.

      Thank you so much!! That means a lot coming from you, love your video of the Honda Urban Express on Nitrous.
      Doing this over again I would heat the entire case and freeze the crank, things would have gone more smoothly for sure

    I am currently working on my Honda Camino (hobbit) and stumbled accros your channel. It is nice to see that people love these mopeds from all over the world. I come from Belgium (where the camino's/hobbits were first made) and luckily we have plenty of stores that make replica parts. Wich makes it easier to finish a Hobbit :)

      Amazing! I have a Camino rear pulley on one of my faster bikes, it is a more simplified design than the US rear pulley.
      We are definitely living in a golden age of moped part availability!

    Nice Vid, man! I can see the typical problem at the A35, rusty cylinder bolts wich will keep the cylinder stuck on the motor sooner or later. I use to lube them with copper paste to prevent this typical A35 problem. You hammered on the inner bearing ring, not so smooth 😀Have much fun!

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks! And yes I have encountered the rusty cylinder studs on another A35 that I briefly worked on, copper paste sounds like just the thing to use, and those bearings got the best of me but I'll be more prepared next time.

    I've split in many a case in my day. Here's a little helpful hint.
    If you have a case that's a little stubborn to pull in half, and you need to use a screwdriver, what I do is, I pry on the cases, where the engine mounting bolt bosses are. That way, if I do booger it up a little bit, it's just in the outside of mounting boss, and it's not anywhere near the actual block sealing surface.
    Also, a few taps of the mallet on the crankshaft ends usually helps a lot, because usually what keeps the cases together the most, is is tight grip the crankshaft bearing on one of the crankshaft ends. I can do it 100% of the time without ever gouging any of the sealing surface with a screwdriver, ever.

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  6 місяців тому

      Appreciate it! That's good advice if I ever need to pry again, but in the future I'm going to use more heat - especially around where the cases seal to the crank bearings.

    Great video thank you. I was it watching your video to confirm which direction the toothed spring plate was facing (The factory manual is not clear.) At 40 minutes 41 seconds in the video, where you were have trouble getting the spring back on, my Tomos A3 factory manual reads: 'Spring joint should be in the middle of one shoe and not behind the eyelet of the brake strip. ' I though it maybe helpful to mention this.

    Thank You TravisTutorial - I have been trying to find a video like this for quite sometime. I bought a Tomos SilverBullet Automatic for $50, the engine isn't seized but i cannot pedal backwards to start it, unsure if it is the one way bearing or sprag spring or ? but seeing this video makes me feel confident about doing the repair. Absolutely Fantastic Video and detailed information exactly what I like. Great Job, Thanks!!

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  2 роки тому

      Great to hear! The transmission is actually not that scary once you open it up once. Even with a missing sprag it should still kick over, I'm wondering if there is something up with your peanut clip...hoping it is an easy fix, $50 is just right for a Tomos!

    I just brought one of these with 1000 miles for 175.00
    This is my first project I have no idea what I’m doing .the guy I brought it from said the kids ran straight gas in it. I believe he mentioned doing a top end rebuild , and he said the piston and o-ring are done .
    Hoping this video can help a complete beginner like me

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  2 роки тому

      The previous video where I do a top end inspection is probably the more helpful one. If it was seized, there is a chance that you could get away with a new piston, and either reuse the cylinder if it's okay or replace. When you remove the cylinder you're looking for gouges in the cylinder walls and broken/stuck rings in the piston. The job is a good introduction to mopeds!
      You might have excess wear in the crank if it was a hard seize, but hopefully you can get away with a top end rebuild.

    Love the videos! I have a bone stock 2012 Sprint ST that I daily 20 miles round trip for work. Aside from the occasional broken brake cable and leaky intake boot. It has NEVER let me down. I'm thinking about doing a clutch seeing as I have about 65k miles on it now. When it is really cold the thing chatters and really hates shifting. But it's fine in warmer weather... I live in New Orleans so we ride all year long. Came across your channel looking for info on the clutch job. I know that the a55 is really similar to the a35 when it comes to the trans clutches and gearing. Subscribed! Do you have any input on the different first gear clutch springs? Treats offers 20, 25, and 30 pound springs along with the stock one which they don't specify what the weight is. I wonder which would give better off the line performance. Thanks

      Amazing mileage!
      I wish I had some details on the performance springs, this is my first time really playing with a 2spd bike. There are some neat aftermarket options Treatland Jammer specifically that seem like a nice throw in and go option.

      @TravisTutorial  Місяць тому

      I actually made one about 10 years ago, how time flies! It's a little drawn out, but if you want to see me go through the components and how to remove it it's still useful.
      The very short version, I would find a spare M5 or M6 bolt that is shorter than the oil injection bolt and put some Motoseal on it and tighten that into the intake, the rest of the components that make up the system can then be ripped out.

    What a dream of a video, exactly what I needed. My Tomos revival only runs on choke and dies out soon after taking the choke off. Also it picks up really badly in first gear, and doesn't like to shift to second (that's what that "?"-shaped spring is for). I will actually take the top end off first for crank inspection, might have to invest in some tools too. Did you have any kind of book/pdf helping you through the build-up?

    • @wouterhendriksen4099
      @wouterhendriksen4099 2 роки тому

      Did you check if you have air leaks? Because if it only runs on choke it has nothing to do with the lower end. I also have a revival and took the whole engine apart
