      @@ascendancy4900 He hadn’t been consistently hit over the course of his career. Granted it really only takes 1 match, or even 1 punch to seriously damage someone, but Foreman was a very big and solid man with a big neck. His punch absorption was insane.

      When I was bartending in Denver, I befriended Wild Bill Hardney. He said Shavers could cave your chest in. He sparred Foreman and Lyle. But Shavers was the most terrifying for his money

      @@The-Pugilist True, but George was not out cold. George actually got up, but the ref didn't want the fight to continue. Neither did George though cause tbh at that time he had no more stamina. Ali beat him with stamina and smarts.

      Most people only see it on tv and that doesn’t even come close to what seeing in person is like never mind getting hit by one. If you want to get an idea by seeing then go to a boxing gym and stand near a heavy bag while some 250lb legit boxer is working it… even if they aint a true puncher it’ll be an eye opening experience for sure.

      What’s funny is how a punch is portrayed on TV and in shows - they always show someone flying backwards etc.😂
      Truth is, a truly HARD PUNCH is like a bell being rung: it stays still, but is vibrating . The human body is mostly water - so when it’s struck suddenly with power, there’s a shock wave running throughout the body- like Foreman says “you feel it all the way down to your toes”

    Earnie Shavers visited us in Prison in Fl. He was so humble and genuine. He told us that the real boxers have to be able to take a hit in order to set up their big one. If we can’t take a hit, we have no future boxing. Solid life advice outside of boxing

    I knew the chef for Mohammad Ali years ago. He told me George either called every couple of days or flew in to spend time with Ali. He said he was the kindest loving man you'd ever meet. He said Ali would smile when he saw him.

    I knew Earnie Shavers from the gyms in the Akron Canton area and had a chance to spar with Earnie. Earnie was only arm punching us with an open glove and when he hit you you got that sinking feeling and you felt it in your toes. It was the hardest I was ever hit by any fighter I was in the ring with.

    I feel that cleveland williams never got the respect he deserves, he went through so much pain and set backs just to get up and keep fighting, is sad to see his fight with Ali to be what he's remember for but he was a truly great fighter and could punch like a mule, much respect for the big cat they call Cleveland Williams 👏

      It was that fight they were speculating where Ali 1st suffered his brain injury. In the clinch Shavers kept hitting Ali in the back of the head. I wish he never fought him 👍🙏

    Every fighter has said the same about those people. One other included, George Forman. Ali rope adoped him and Ali stated he thought several times he thought George was going to make him go down from body shots alone.

      He has about 9 children & all are called George except one girl, just a guess but l reckon it's Georgina. He named them all George so if the missus called, he didn't have to answer did he. She terrified George and that is why he retired not long after Ali beat him, she did to after losing.

    I have straight up grown to love Mr. Foreman, not just his Meineke papa bear form but back to a time when he was the most feared man alive. He has always been thoughtful, fair, honest and a soft-but-well spoken gentleman. We are lucky to still be graced by his noble presence to this day.

      I think it was mainly Cooney’s left hook. Truly a savage punch, he could put you down with a badly shot. George was tough enough to take it, but man enough to admit that it hurt like hell

    He started boxing late and
    turned professional at 30
    4 years later he fought against Ali and was 10 rounds ahead on the leaderboards
    Had a brutal fight with Foreman
    And knocked out Earnie Shavers

    Love George ! Met Ernie Shaffer when I was young when he lived in Braceville Ohio ! What a nice man he was ! He was training and jogged down the road . He stopped and talked to us out of the blue . He had change in his pocket and gave it to us . I will never forget that .

      The Foreman/Lyle fight is the biggest slug-fest I've ever seen. Foreman couldn't even lift his arms to defend himself in the final round, only to throw punches.
      Foreman fights are like fights you see in Rocky films. The Frazier fights, the winning the title at 45, the going the distance with Holyfield at 42 and losing but smiling at the end because he knew he'd done the impossible just to go the distance and get the opportunity at age 42 after not fighting for a decade.

    The Ron Lyle - George Foreman fight was my favorite match of all time. Both of them tasted canvas multiple times. Foreman said Ron Lyle hit so hard that it didn't even hurt, you just suddenly found yourself lying on the ground.

I know he was a good fighter and was unlucky as many good fighters are that he is up against some of the greatest, Again, as hard as he hit Ali beat him, we can talk about all the great punchers of that era, but Ali was above them all and didn't hit like them. He could when planted, but his footwork was such, hit & don't get hit. Tyson loved Ali & he knew & knows Ali is the Greatest heavyweight.

    Thank fuck I seem to be blessed with power way above my size. I'm 5'6 but I hit so quickly and accurately that I've put down amd.out men far bigger than myself. 1 guy was 6'4 and when he woke up and we spoke days later he said he has never been hit.like that before, he could barley remember me hitting him at all but his friends and colleagues told him he was out the instant I hit him, right on the button and its nap tim. I was actually worried for him when he went down and I helped him back up which gained me so much respect.from him and we are close friends still many years later! Thank fuck I have timing and speed as I'm a total shite bag and he'd have killed me if he got hold of me

    This guy was a god gifted talent. The dents he used to leave in them heavy bags demonstrates how hard he used to hit. Everyone feared this man in his era. Even the great Ali avoided a rematch with him.
