Unbelievable how Brits living in Spain voted to leave. Sums how they treat life in Spain, they form little Britans and enclaves and rarely integrate with the locals. No wonder they forget they are immigrants themselves

They are not expats, they are immigrants. Unless the term is also extended to Polish, Greek, Spanish people residing in the UK. But it never is. Non Anglo Saxons are always referred to as immigrants. The very term "ex pat" is exclusive and exceptional, like the attitude of Dave in this report who bought a holiday home in Spain but voted Leave, assuming HIS Freedom of movement wouldn't be affected.

I'm sure there were plenty of Spaniards that detested having to pay the healthcare of immigrants who wouldn't assimilate but grinned and bared it because it was an EU requirement. Not really. There are at least 3 times more British immigrants in Spain than Spanish immigrants in the UK. And those are public numbers, but in reality there are far more non registered, making use of that terrible terrible awful freedom of movement. Most of the British immigrants in Spain and other members are pensioners and therefore require a lot of medical attention, whilst most of the Spanish immigrants in the UK are young and working, tax payers and therefore with direct right to the NHS, not through a treaty. Equally, those British immigrants working in Spain are already paying their own access, it is only self employed people the ones with a problem in most countries. The British pensioners cannot afford private health insurance (and in most cases they don't qualify anyway), so the UK will have to pay for their expenses. No worries, the Spanish are already paying for their own access to the worse British NHS, so they do not really need to cover all those elderly people's expenses. Spain has loads of pensioners itself and that alone is an issue, they don't want to pay for more. Very few EU citizens go to the UK for their elderly years, so the numbers and requirements are completely different between working and pensioner immigrants.

@@tomaddie1969 hmm many baby boomers remember what took us into then common market in the first place but they must have benign forgetfulness.
Ted Heath took us in 73 WITHOUT a vote as he was concerned that he might not get the answer he wanted because there was so much scepticism. De Gaulle was totally against the uk joining. The 1975 referendum asked us if we wanted to stay in the common market. We were assured it was for trade only. This was my very first vote and I took it very seriously but voted yes. Heath admitted to this deception shortly before he died and successive uk governments perpetuated the lie. There are government documents that confirm this.
The main reason that brexit is a complete horlicks is that David Cameron told the civil service NOT TO BOTHER planing for a leave vote as remain would win the day. In the meantime the civil service were happy to let the eu do the work and take the blame when things went wrong. But also meant they lost their skills and the competence.
And just look where all that has got us. It beggars belief that David Cameron is not back in office and unelected, but also that people called people that voted leave ‘uneducated’. You only had to watch different channels from around the world to realise that there was a distinct possibility that brexit might win!

If each UK national living in Spain spends 250 euros per week - that's 13 million euros each year for every thousand UK nationals. This money is UK pounds injected into the Spanish economy. It creates many jobs for Spanish people. UK pensioners do not take jobs from locals and the UK government pays for healthcare provided by Spain. Countries like Poland have not been paying the healthcare costs of their nationals in the UK.

For the first time in my life, when the UK voted to leave the EU and to reject this developing brotherhood of nations, I felt deeply ashamed to be British. I despise what that vote said about us as a nation, and I no longer feel any sense of kinship or belonging to this country.
One small but sad thing (amongst the vast number of tragedies that this decision will cause) is that I wont even get to gloat. When all the expert predictions of economic hardship come true over the next 10 years, the brexiters will claim that the continuing austerity and economic disasters are happening because the brexit wasn't hard enough, or wasn't soft enough, or because it was messed up by treacherous remainer politicians. They will never see the depth of their folly.
And as for this mythical right to self determination? Well I lived through Thatcher, and I would trust the EU to make laws for this country before I would trust any elected British politician.
The EU politicians may arguably be as corrupt and self serving as ours, but at least they are half competent.
This band of elderly turkeys who voted enthusiastically for Christmas are only the tiniest tip of the iceberg that the good ship UK is now steaming towards.

And as for your dire economic predictions - look around you. There are people in the North East starving already, food banks, homeless etc. - 'Tory Policies' certainly, but I haven't noticed the EU stepping in.

@@dotcomx7699 For me personally, the issue of Brexit overrides my politically left leanings, because I believe the numerous credible economic experts who are predicting that the economic and social damage that will result from Brexit over the next decade will be huge. It seems that for the working classes the Brexit damage will be almost as bad as the damage done by Thatcher. I couldnt vote for something which was so economically destructive to the people of this country- regardless of the political ideologies involved. It was simple question of prosperity versus poverty, for the working classes at least. The bitter fruits of Brexit will be harvested over a decade of misery.
on your point about the EU not stepping in back in the 80s to restrain Thatchers more extreme and damaging policies, remember that EU employment legislation (such as it was back then) was not being breached by Thatcher, so there were no grounds for the EU to 'step in', and no legal basis.
Apologies if I am misunderstanding, but it sounds as if you voted to leave the EU as a sort of revenge vote for the lack of EU action 30 years ago, in a situation where they had no actual power to intervene?

    • @dotcomx7699

Tony C I voted leave because I don't like to see the exploitation of the Eastern Europeans doing the menial jobs that used to have Union Protection in the '60s and '70s. I'm from an ex mining community. Where the pit once stood there is a 'Sports Direct' warehouse which employs only Polish/Romanian workers. The local people are willing to work but for some reason, they don't get set on (maybe it's because £7 a hour and zero hour contracts don't sit well with them!) Why would Sports Direct employ them when they can ship in cheap labour from Europe? What does the EU do to protect the labour force from such exploitation?
Our people are not racists. Our people, especially the older ones, cannot understand why their children have been thrown on the scrap heap before they leave school. I was born and educated there, then university and went back to teach in my old secondary school. Such social mobility is not open to their children. I personally, have witnessed opportunities dwindle for the working class since my childhood in the sixties.
We have been let down by both the Labour Party and the TUC. As far as my community is concerned the EU has done nothing for them except stretch their resources with the influx of 'foreigners' without providing any benefit. Indeed, there was no infrastructure provided for the newcomers. Not many of the local young men and women see any opportunities to work in Europe. There is a hopelessness about them - some have turned to drugs. Many of the girls are pushing prams before they're twenty. The food banks are busy and 'payday loan' companies are flourishing.
As their teacher, it's this lack of hope that's distressing. This 'we're better together in Europe' is meaningless to them and their bewildered parents, who must wonder what went wrong. You talk of 'economic destruction' caused by leaving EU, it can't get much worse without recourse to some sort of mass revolution. Incidentally, I voted against joining in 1975 - butter mountains, wine lakes etc. when there were people starving didn't seem right. Forty years later, I cannot believe how embroiled we actually became.
Despite the popularity of our MP, Dennis Skinner, my biggest fear is that our Politicians are creating a right wing Monster Party with their petty squabbles and breathtaking incompetence (85% of MPs voted for a referendum without a clue what would happen if the people voted leave) The Brexit vote has revealed what a fractured land we are. I could've never imagined myself standing on the same platform as Rees Mogg and that odious Farage . The social damage, you speak of, has already been done. My only concern is the uniting force that the people are waiting to rally round won't be wearing jackboots. Thank you for the exchange.

At 3:37 a woman in this vid complains about lack of information available regarding Brexit at the time. She is mistaken. I was in Fuengirola from February to late April 2016. I left just 2 months before the vote. The Spanish press wasn’t interested but the Brexit campaign headlined english language newspapers and TV news (including BBC) every single day. The internet was saturated with it. Brexit was the only thing Brits I knew there wanted to talk about. I spent days, even weeks trying to explain things like the cost and complexities of private healthcare insurance, non-resident banking, and Spain’s minimum income levels for non-EU people living there, or even simple stuff like the Schengen 90/180 rule, and they simply refused to believe the rules that already applied to other non-EU people would apply to them if the UK left the EU. A lot of Brit's have been living under the radar, these Brit's rushing for residency why if they have been living in Spain for years.
To avoid paying Spanish income tax, they have not paid tax in the UK nor in Spain that is the reason they never applied for residency. if you live in a country for 183 days a year you are due to pay tax in that country, at the rate set by that country. Hence now the 90 day rule, maximum you time in Spain 180 days a year, it just closed the tax loophole.
How many pensioner are claiming UK income support, by having a postal address in the UK at which they allegedly live in, hence not applied for residency.
Sorry you can't kid me meet too many Brits living in Spain supported by UK welfare. Not being nasty, but honest they delight in telling you the wrinkles after a few beers, including claiming housing benefit, then rent it out to a family member with social picking up the bill along with the council tax.
How after a vote in 2016 to leave the EU, have these people done nothing? could be some of the above reasons, milk the system in both countries.
I live in the UK now, but have lived in Spain, several year, i have residency in Spain and paid income tax in Spain when i lived their, no problem with health care, why because i had a fiscal record. I contributed to the country i lived in, and the system to keep that countries health care going.

Wasn't there the idea to establish a point-based system to decide who can get to live and work in the UK? I would assume age, education, speaking the language, not burdening the health or social system, actively participating in the economy and paying taxes will feature highly. Wondering how the majority of British immigrants in Spain would fare?

Let me give my personal experience. We lived in Spain for 6 years. Because of the lower tax rates we could afford the £25 a month 'Previasa' health insurance (BUPA equivalent). The level of service is sadly 100 times better than the NHS. No waiting, quality medical help 24/7. Our daughter was born there in Marriot Hotel surroundings and never one word of negativity. Oh and yes, we were immigrants into their Country and respected their beliefs. We learned the language,. set up a business and employed purely Spanish. We came back to the UK to look after my wife's mother who sadly passed away. We are returning back to Spain this year and laugh at these Channel 4/BBC News reports. Sadly millions will believe them. England IS a Third World Country. The sooner people get out and experience the World the sooner they will realise what a beautiful Country the UK was and how it's turned into a shanty town...

@Dr Downtime because the huge tax breaks are on the money they earn using the current setup that the UK exists as a member of the EU regardless of your opinions on what should happen on the 30th, the fact we don't know at this late stage is enough for some businesses such as airbus, nissan, bmw, toyota, farage and his children, dyson and jacob reese moggs investment company to all make plans to setup in countries that are either in the eu, have deals with the EU or at the minimum know what the rules look like for the forseeable future. Fortunately i can apply for my Irish passport and get to live in Spain. I have bought a house in the country area and plan to do a b and b. I have no health issues and will get private health insurance. My partner is a hgv class 1 driver and so they will try get some work doing that. We also want land to set up a small animal sanctuary and contribute something back to Spain, as well as pay tax. We need to earn 650 to 750 a month to get to live there, after 5 years, can apply for citizenship. We are learning Spanish and want to mix with Spanish, not Brits and fit in with Spanish culture. We know nothing will be get handed on a plate and why should it! We need to earn the right to live there and contribute, like the Spanish do, to their economy. Alot of those who voted Brexit are baby boomers and have a sense of entitlement, they mix with other Brits and choose to live only on coastal resorts with other Brits, not mixing or contributing. They was brought up in a time of prosperity and still expect an easy ride in life. They seem spoilt and only think of themselves. Its embarrassing and gives all Brits a bad name. They need to realise no one owes you anything and this sovereign nation is a thing of the past! Sadly, Brexit only seems to get noticed by them once it affects them personally, not the impact it has on the UK or future generations. They have learnt a hard lesson, only after it affects them do they seem bothered. They wont be around to see how it will destroy the UK in the future and the legacy it caused their grandkids, but I doubt they really care.

Health care here is not free. We came to live and retire here in 2005. We became residents and signed on the local town padron. To get ' free' health care, we transfered all our national health payments, from a life time of work in the UK, over to Spain. This was transferred from Newcastle. We now have Spanish SIP health cards which entitle us to national health treatment, the same as if we were in the UK. So don't tell me health care here is free here in Spain. We also pay Spanish taxes, twice a year, from our UK pensions. We also have health insurance, just in case we have something urgent, which is no different to the Uk. We changed our UK driving licences to Spanish ones and imported our car (left hand drive) changing the plates to Spanish. We retain our UK internet bank and import money as and when the rate is favourable. Yes, we have immigrated here to Spain and love the climate but have ticked all the boxes in order to do so. We do not call ourselves expats, just retirees from the Uk. This is the Miami of Europe and is a great place to live if you observe the rules. The only thing we have not done is to apply for Spanish citizenship but this is not necessary. Our Spanish is not bad but the Spanish people help out if you are trying. After all it is their country. By the way, I hate the beer swilling expats on the Costas who give the rest of us a bad name. I have no sympathy for them if they have to sell up and return to the UK.
