    The reason for only two people getting the medal of honor, is the being shot and allowing themselves to bleed out to keep the mission a success. The medal of honor here is essentially for accepting you are going to die, but doing what is necessary in the situation anyways, even if not doing your job could have given you a higher chance at survival. The whole crew was there, but only two of them made the decision to let themselves die, to keep the mission a success. Also, the award they did get, is like the second or third highest medal you can get if I remember right, so its not like they didn't get recognized, they just didn't lay down their life directly.

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 8 місяців тому +3

      Correct, could be wrong but IIRC and AFAIK the order is Congressional Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart (Depending on the Era).
      So the entire crew got the 3rd highest medal of Valor in a previous mission, then the 2 seriously wounded/killed got the highest with the rest of the crew getting the second highest medals of Valor on the last mission, with some Purple Hearts sprinkled in. (Medal for being wounded or killed in service against the enemy, by the enemy, and necessitating medical treatment by a medical officer).
      Additional info unrelated to Ole' 666 and the Eager Beavers:
      The meanings and requirements of the medals vary throughout US history, such as the CMoH used to also be given for normal things such as running a base well, etc, until it was limited in the late 1800's to its modern requirements. Even then, you used to be able to receive multiple of them as long as it was in a separate action, that was until the US Marine Dan Daly (TFE has an excellent video on him as well) was nominated for his 3rd well deserved CMoH in WWI, after receiving his 1st in the Boxer Rebellion and his second in Cuba or Haiti I think, and Congress decided "NO, 3's not fair for one person" so he got a DSC and SIlver Star instead with Congress limiting CMoH's to 1 per person a year later which is why we don't see badasses with 2 anymore. They just get other medals after the 1st CMoH with them being barred from joining thay legendary club and status of those that came before them. So look at the other high awards a CMoH recipient after 1919 has received and read the citations for them receiving it, there's a chance they could've been a multiple recipient just hidden behind a lesser medal because of bureaucratic blowhards with an inferiority complex.
      Another example is the Purple Hearts 💜 various meanings throughout its history, it was usually just a medal for heroic or meritous conduct and didn't require being killed or wounded until 1944-ish. And has even changed since, in 1952 being retroactively awarded as far back as 4/6/1917, JFK (Only US President ever to have a Purple Heart) insisting civilians wounded or killed in service to US Armed forces be eligible (Unfortunately this was gradually limited afterwards and eligibility has since been restricted back to Armed Forces, and removed most civilian claims), under Regan it was expanded to include being injured in a terrorist attack or peacekeeping operations.
      So many Purple Hearts were made for the planned invasion of Japan (500,000 for Operation Downfall), that they didn't have to make more until the 90's, with more Downfall Era stockpiles found sometimes and refurbished to be added to the pool of medals and possibly be received.

      The thing about those rounds though is they're designed to be used against hard targets and have so much power behind them that they don't end up transferring much of their energy compared to something smaller like a 50bmg hitting a person, the hole is nearly 2x as big but there should hopefully be less internal damage as they just zip through rather than tumbling or bouncing off bones since 20mm is much moreso an anti tank round than an anti person one. I would absolutely love to see 20mm hollow points tested someday though cause that would be absolutely devastating

Bosses know, somebody got to do the work!! (pipefitter/welder, industrial construction) I had a poem I would recite to the person hiring: I can long-arc, short-arc, heli-arc, tack. I'm a pipefitter, ironworker, lumberjack. Run any machine that will make a track. And do the boss-man's job 'till he gets back. Now. What do you need me for?

      thats not how that worked at that period of time, any military affiliation makes it a viable target, and the japs built all war manufacturing and troop housing inside cities making the whole cities viable targets, bombing was incredibly inaccurate so box formations were used, it wasnt until desert storm and the advent of guided munitions and the implementation of gps constellations that we could attack specific targets and focus on minimizing civilian casualties. it is important to look at history with a period appropriate lense and not our current capabilities and sensabilities

    36:55 Quick clarification. I do not consider 20mm to be artillery, you have to at least double that girth for me to agree, however that is still a 3/4 inch wide piece of lead traveling at mach nope, with friends..... Here's where your comparison breaks down however. A Zero has a, forward only facing, pair of these guns, two, which can be directly compared to the 50 cal; which is effectively a half inch piece of lead traveling at the same speed of Nope with friends, only she has 19..... of them..... many of them duel linked like Doublemint Gum.... with a MUUUUUUUUCH larger canister of bullets. Lucy ..IS.. the Charizard facing 20 Charmeleons. Still not good odds, but those Zero's had no idea what was cutting them out of the air like so much paper, from every conceivable angle.
    ...
    That being said, getting hit, as a human, by a gun designed to take down the much larger plane you are inside.... Not a good day...

    Yes it is a war crime to purposely kill civilians. But back during WWII we did not have the accuracy that we have now so civilian deaths were considered acceptable collateral damage depending on the importance of the primary target(the leading generals to the enemy is a very important target) so civilian losses are acceptable(back then). If you think that is bad, look into the fire bombing we did in Japan during WWII.

    There is a KEY word that someone left out, yes INTENTIONALLY killing civilians can sometimes be considered a war crime, BUT UNINTENTIONALLY killing civilians is almost NEVER a war crime, and this crew, (OR BOMBADIER) was NOT targeting civilians, he was targeting an ammunition depot, and then a fuel depot, his target was MATERIAL, not PERSONELL, so that is a HUGE distingishment that NEEDS to be made, NOW with all of that said, one of the brutal realities of warfare, is that the weapons used DO NOT, CAN NOT distinguish between soldiers wearing a uniform of the opposing force, a soldier wearing a uniform of an ally, a soldier wearing the uniform of the very same army, or a civilian, wheather that civilian be a man, woman, old person, child or baby. and UNFORTUNATELY civilian casualties during a war, is something that HAS always happened, it sucks, but that is the cold hard truth of the matter, in a war innocent people always die in the crossfire. I am sorry to taint your rose colored glasses, where YOU believe that civilians do not die during a war, now granted, in the United States of America, we DO TAKE tremendous measures to prevent innocents from being killed during the fighting, as well EVERYONE SHOULD, but again UNFORTUNATELY, that is not always something that can be controlled 100%. so to that person who spewed off about a war crime, that person should probably do a bit of research and find out what the definition of a war crime is.

    'killing civilians is a war crime" Sorry but no. Intentionally targeting civilians RATHER than military is a war crime. The hotel in question had been commandeered by the Japanese Navy and was being used as an officers club (a meeting place for officers to hang out, party, and discuss strategy) meaning it was a legitimate military target. If you drop a bomb on an enemy military site and kill civilians that are also there, that is called collateral damage not war crimes.
