    Great Video, feel comfortable already fixing the elliptical machine. 'Botched up the installation and the bolt wouldn't go in. Someone asked about where to find one. Found a cheap set on the net at Harbor Freight Tools at 15.99. Will see if the have in the store nearby to fix the skipping thread and complete the installation.
    Thanks.

    Actually to clean threads you use thread chasers, i use them when i have a fresh block and i chase the head bolt holes. I can make a video on thread chasers too if you want to learn about them

  • @klowny1969
    @klowny1969  11 років тому +1

    Valve cover..im assuming u mean the head where the valve cover bolts into? If u have aluminum heads then they need to be helicoiled..if u tap a normal thread the bolt can be the same bolt..taps just restore the normal threads..i habe no experience with harbor freight kits..also dont forget to subscribe thanks!

    My question is when standing the threads back yo is the bolt as song as before the hammer damage.
    I find when repairing hard to buy bolts and nuts I always put them in a vise for better control.

    I mushroomed my steering shaft on my car trying to take the steering wheel off. I forced the nut back on the shaft after doing that as I had to use the car, knowing the threads would go to crap anyway. I'm now tasked to fix this. I'm hoping it'll work fine although I never used a tap and die set before and I'm at risk of making things worse. I assume the original nut would feel slightly loose after rethreading the bolt due the cut down on the threads? I could potentially require a different/smaller nut?

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  8 років тому

      you should be fine

    • @Megaman_308
      @Megaman_308 8 років тому

      Encouraging :p
      I assume the two important things to make sure you get right with this is using the right die size and not rethreading the bolt on an angle.

    the best video i've seen so far about tap & die. can I reuse the bolt when I tap the valve cover? I'm just assuming once you tap on a thread, the hole gets bigger and it might need a sligthly bigger bolt? or should I just use die on the bolt too? also, I'm planning to buy the 40 piece from Harbor Freight, would it do the work on my valve cover? Thanks!

    instead of using that black tool.. if you dont have enough space. can you use a socket wrench instead?

    • @Silver_Turtle
      @Silver_Turtle 9 років тому +1

      +Solomon Yim An interesting idea; but the size of the dies would probably require the use of either a 3/4" or 1" drive socket. Take it from me, those things are expensive.

    You don't use a regular tap and die set to clean up damaged taps and dies.You use a rethreading tap and die set.Tap and Dies are made to make threads,not to clean threads

  • @EvoBrandon

    Do you have to rethread the entire bolt? Or if the damaged threads are at the very top of the bolt can you just rethread that part and it will carry into the existing un damaged threads? Hope that question makes sense.

    The bolt I am trying to fix is part of an elliptical machine. The end of it is stripped and I cannot get the die to hand screw on as you show in your video. Any suggestions? Also, I am finding that two sizes (one metric and one standard) seem to fit in the grooves when measuring. Any thoughts there would also be appreciated.

    • @klowny1969
      @klowny1969  8 років тому

      usually if the threads are real close to each other then its a metric size..if the threads are coarser then its standard..u can try tapping the die on there with a hammer to get it started, but u have to really pay attention to start the die on there squarely

  • @1AnOnlyDareBear

    Cutting oil is better than WD40 for threading, but if all you have is WD40 and you're just touching up a damaged thread, it's o.k. ANY oil is better than NO oil.
