We are putting together a trailer and one of the bolts for the wheel is messed up! You are the reason I am not crying. I am so glad I get to live in the future where nice people like you make videos.
Thank You! Awesome video. I inherited a bunch of my Dads tools since he passed away, and he had a bunch of Taps/etc. Thanks for showing me how to use these....very good to know
finally....a tap and die video that doesnt use a drill press or workshop grade equipment...i have one of my diesel engine injector hold down bolts that went almost blunt.....its either a DIY job or engine head removal and off to a workshop $$$.......thank you
Great video, easy to understand. I used a similar set from HF recently and figured out how it worked but your video confirmed I was right. Much appreciated.
Thanks! I've gone out and bought my tool & die set to work on a friend's frying pan handle. Your video has helped me get this far. It'll be fun tomorrow to check out my new toy.
yes, the head where the valve cover bolts go into. I've been reading and watching about helicoil now. Thanks again! Already subscribed and watching multiple videos in multiplbe chrome tabs from you :)
Great video. This also works on a car axle. I used a dremel on my 2008 altima. Saved me at least a grand after I hammered my axle too much while removing the bearings. Thank you.
Great Video, feel comfortable already fixing the elliptical machine. 'Botched up the installation and the bolt wouldn't go in. Someone asked about where to find one. Found a cheap set on the net at Harbor Freight Tools at 15.99. Will see if the have in the store nearby to fix the skipping thread and complete the installation. Thanks.
Actually to clean threads you use thread chasers, i use them when i have a fresh block and i chase the head bolt holes. I can make a video on thread chasers too if you want to learn about them
Valve cover..im assuming u mean the head where the valve cover bolts into? If u have aluminum heads then they need to be helicoiled..if u tap a normal thread the bolt can be the same bolt..taps just restore the normal threads..i habe no experience with harbor freight kits..also dont forget to subscribe thanks!
My question is when standing the threads back yo is the bolt as song as before the hammer damage. I find when repairing hard to buy bolts and nuts I always put them in a vise for better control.
I mushroomed my steering shaft on my car trying to take the steering wheel off. I forced the nut back on the shaft after doing that as I had to use the car, knowing the threads would go to crap anyway. I'm now tasked to fix this. I'm hoping it'll work fine although I never used a tap and die set before and I'm at risk of making things worse. I assume the original nut would feel slightly loose after rethreading the bolt due the cut down on the threads? I could potentially require a different/smaller nut?
Encouraging :p I assume the two important things to make sure you get right with this is using the right die size and not rethreading the bolt on an angle.
the best video i've seen so far about tap & die. can I reuse the bolt when I tap the valve cover? I'm just assuming once you tap on a thread, the hole gets bigger and it might need a sligthly bigger bolt? or should I just use die on the bolt too? also, I'm planning to buy the 40 piece from Harbor Freight, would it do the work on my valve cover? Thanks!
klowny1969 hi, thank you so much, yes you explain things easy to understand. Could you also, if you have not done it, explain how to make threading in stainless steel? Please let me know your website address. Thanks
+Solomon Yim An interesting idea; but the size of the dies would probably require the use of either a 3/4" or 1" drive socket. Take it from me, those things are expensive.
You don't use a regular tap and die set to clean up damaged taps and dies. You use a rethreading tap and die set.Tap and Dies are made to make threads, not to clean threads
Do you have to rethread the entire bolt? Or if the damaged threads are at the very top of the bolt can you just rethread that part and it will carry into the existing un damaged threads? Hope that question makes sense.
The bolt I am trying to fix is part of an elliptical machine. The end of it is stripped and I cannot get the die to hand screw on as you show in your video. Any suggestions? Also, I am finding that two sizes (one metric and one standard) seem to fit in the grooves when measuring. Any thoughts there would also be appreciated.
usually if the threads are real close to each other then its a metric size..if the threads are coarser then its standard..u can try tapping the die on there with a hammer to get it started, but u have to really pay attention to start the die on there squarely
is there any way of threading a steel rod without using a die? I have like 2 1 inch rods to thread with M3, so buying a die would be too expensive for such job
Regular taps and dies are not made for thread repair. You buy a thread rethreading kit for damaged and screwed up threads.Regular taps and dies are made for making new threads only taking out material.
Cutting oil is better than WD40 for threading, but if all you have is WD40 and you're just touching up a damaged thread, it's o.k. ANY oil is better than NO oil.
Sometimes u are under a time crunch or working late at night and no stores are open..also if its a threaded hole lets say on an engine block, u habe no choice other than to tap the hole..thanks for watching mr. Krueger ..I loved ur movies
***** the "nut" my bolts thread into are part of the FRAME on my truck, how would you suggest I go about "buying" a new one of those. Also NO ONE but the dealer sells the bolts I need and the nearest one of them is a county south and it's the weekend, how would I go about getting one then?
***** FOUR THOUSAND or is your reading comprehension just that shitty? either way even if it was a thousand dollar truck why would I throw away what would is and will be a running driving vehicle I just bought in February over a stripped bolt, thats just INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by your reasoning if I picked up a nail and got a flat I should go out and buy all new wheels and tires instead of paying 10-15 dollars to have a patch put on the inside of the tire.
Gray Anderson oh please..so says the guy who never picked up a wrench..and dont tell me you've been working as a "whatever" for 30 years..you have no experience..and that's that
7 years after your post...you just saved me major money on a Jeep rebuild. Much gratitude, sir.
awesome

Very nice. Videos like these makes you learn about a lot of stuff for free!

Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Excellent presentation for everyday people who aren't concerned with "tight" tolerances.
George Cooper Jr thanks
Awesome job man. Good job in being thorough in your explanation of the tool and how to use it. Great video man
BDG thank u
I subscribed to you because you’re the only one I found who demonstrated how to use those little thread gages.
Lol thanks man
Thanks! I've gone out and bought my tool & die set to work on a friend's frying pan handle. Your video has helped me get this far. It'll be fun tomorrow to check out my new toy.
Thats awesome..thanks for watching!
Great job .. Needed this info to fix threads on my motorcycle
Thanks for watching
me too on my kick stand
M.A.G.A Brother
thank you for this informative video. it's going to make my work much easier. good job!
Thank you! Saved me from having to buy a new shifter-box because some previous owner tried to thread on a shift knob with the wrong thread pitch.
This is very helpful. I've learnt something new with your sharing. Thank you.
Awesome thanks for watching

Nice video. Thx. I like to use plenty of oil (any type).

boyao yu Just one thumb up?
How about two?
you explain things very well.
Thank u..and thanks for watching
klowny1969 hi, thank you so much, yes you explain things easy to understand. Could you also, if you have not done it, explain how to make threading in stainless steel? Please let me know your website address. Thanks
using a fixed clamp might be a good idea!
instead of using that black tool.. if you dont have enough space. can you use a socket wrench instead?
+Solomon Yim An interesting idea; but the size of the dies would probably require the use of either a 3/4" or 1" drive socket. Take it from me, those things are expensive.
Any good suggestions on a decent kit to clean and thread nuts and bolts.👍🇺🇸
Harbor freight sells some good kits..don't forget to subscribe 😉
You don't use a regular tap and die set to clean up damaged taps and dies. You use a rethreading tap and die set.Tap and Dies are made to make threads, not to clean threads
thanks a lot for this video, how much did this kit cost you?
Great video, well done, thanks for posting,,,
Thanks for watching and dont forget to subscribe and hit that bell :)
Thanks for posting this dude!

Is there a way to rethread a nylon or plastic bolt?
you can try this same method
Do u have a video on fixing broken exhaust studs that connects the exhaust to the manifold?
Do you have to rethread the entire bolt? Or if the damaged threads are at the very top of the bolt can you just rethread that part and it will carry into the existing un damaged threads? Hope that question makes sense.
Thanks for watching
Awesome, video
Good video! But use tapping oil. Specifically meant for cutting threads!
Great video thanks

so you don't need a bigger bolt after so it still fits? like your not making the bolt hole bigger?
nope..just cutting the threads..use same bolt
+klowny1969 ok thank you so if I was doing the bolt hole and the bolt if I use the same size it will match up
+Darius Harris yesir
+klowny1969 thank you
awesome video , can we shrink a bolt size using the same method ? thanks and keep the great work ..
It is possible..but not too much
Great vid man
Irondrgntp thank you
Whats this tool called?
Great video, and have subscribed to your channel.
Harvey Staples thanks
Very good videos
Wilfie Brown thank u
is there any way of threading a steel rod without using a die? I have like 2 1 inch rods to thread with M3, so buying a die would be too expensive for such job
thank you!
A die is tapered so start the bolt at the side with the stamped size.
awesome video
thanks for watching
Will this work if the threads are completely messed up ?
It should work for the most part
It was the threads on the radiator side
I had to buy a new radiator
I bought the new with the whole kit
It basically brought everything included I’m so happy!
Left hand threads.?
Regular taps and dies are not made for thread repair. You buy a thread rethreading kit for damaged and screwed up threads.Regular taps and dies are made for making new threads only taking out material.
not everybody has the funds to buy thread chasers..tap and dies are more useful
Sears sells the thread chaser set under $100.00.The fastner can come loose overtime when a tap is used to clean the threads out
....what if its a built in screw like on a starter. the other screw on the starter wont let you turn that tool all around.
Leo Yanez i dont understand your question
Clamping the head of the bolt in a vise would make this a much easier operation
yeah it would..i tried to make the video for a normal person without those luxuries..dont forget to subscribe
John Wick the tool man.
Cutting oil is better than WD40 for threading, but if all you have is WD40 and you're just touching up a damaged thread, it's o.k. ANY oil is better than NO oil.
Lol great..thanks!
you should have shown the nut going back on the bolt after you sued the die on the bolt. Otherwise great vid !
rbbiefah thanks
"screwed-up" isn't stripped. Stripped means no threads left
You really, really need to subscribe to my channel ASAP
Using the wrong tool - you should use a "thread chaser". You're going to ruin that die.
Reminds me of Zombie Land: Double tap or die.
lol thnx for watching
Yes, those threads are *screwed* up hahaha
John Doe lol
thumbs up..
For sure don't have any trouble hearing you lol.
Jesse Johnston ;)
you buy a new bolt

Hinged reverse thread chaser could help.
