"The Wampanoag People" (a.k.a.: Wɑːmpənɔːɡ or, Wôpanâak), are a Native American People, who are located mostly in the Eastern regions of USA, particularly, in the Massachusetts area. They were a loose Confederation of several tribes, in the 17th century, but, today Wampanoag people encompass five officially recognized tribes. The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, in Massachusetts are federally recognized.. and the Chappaquiddick, Herring Pond, Assawompsett-Nemsket Band of Wampanoags and Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe (Pokonoket), are recognized, by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They lived in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, in the beginning of the 17th century, at the time of first contact with the English colonists, a territory that included the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. From 1615 to 1619, the Wampanoag People suffered an epidemic, long suspected to be smallpox. However, modern research suggests, that it may have been leptospirosis, a bacterial infection which can develop into Weil's syndrome. YIt was brought over by the colonists and caused a high fatality rate, nearly decimating the Wampanoag population.
"The last great North American glacier began its retreat some 10,000 years ago, leaving behind the accumulation of boulders, sand, and clay that is now known as Martha's Vineyard. The ancestors of Wampanoag People have lived for at least 10,000 years at Aquinnah (Gay Head) and throughout the island of Noepe (Martha's Vineyard), pursuing a traditional economy based on fishing and agriculture. The Aquinnah Wampanoag share the belief, that the giant Moshup created Noepe and the neighboring islands, taught our people how to fish and to catch whales and still presides over our destinies. Our beliefs and a hundred million years of history are imprinted in the colorful clay cliffs of Aquinnah.
