I came out of rehab 2,5 months ago and when I talk to people about my addiction and recovery, i make similar jokes when they ask me about this experience. I wonder if he’d ever even talk about it if it was not discovered by media and the public. But in a situation when everyone knows- on one hand, it’s necessary to be shallow and laugh it off because it’s shameful and comes with a stigma so you are trying your best to shake it off by being clever about it and laughing it off first (so noone else can do that for you later) + you want them to believe that you have changed cuz you kinda have, BUT. I totally agree with your that it comes across as dishonest at times or shallow because of 2 things: 1. It is traumatic and personal experience that most people keep private 2. You want everyone to believe that youre a trustworthy person to gain back respect and future job prospects. So it’s true that he probably won’t admit that he feels hurt and shameful about this cuz then people could start speculating that he will relapse or sth. So in a way i think in this special he is also trying to convince himself to believe in the idea of the “new” him. Of the guy who can go to change his baby and have the full circle moment. Cuz with addiction the dark truth is - it never goes away. You can treat it, yes. For some people they never use after rehab again. But when i was in there, they thought us that relapse is a part of recovery and the more you go out in public and declare that you are so changed now etc., the relapse is sneaking in the background waiting for the right time to strike. I am thinking of what id do in his situation. Probably the same to move on faster. But i agree that some emotional depth was lost in choosing this way.
I'd say addiction is one of the greatest teachers of our weakness. I don't see it as a condition, but a deeply humbling revelation of what most of us hide deep down inside, whereas the addict will make manifest... ...That we are beasts... impulsive in nature, untrustworthy, liars, full of wicked schemes, nothing more and nothing less. For this reason we all need the Twelve Steps. For this reason we all need a Redeemer... Others will be able to disguise this reality in them because their vices are not so apparent... but deep down, why do they do what they do? What do they seek? Is the answer something that can be rationalized? Something that can look pretty on all sides? I'd dare say not...
All in all: Hollywood is not the place where your authentic self will thrive. No one wants to see your ugliness, that which you truly are. No one but the Redeemer...
