Over the past 26 years, 16 expeditions have tried and failed to climb one of Pakistan's 8,000 meter peaks in winter.
In February 2011, Simone Moro, Denis Urubko, and Corey Richards became the first to achieve this alpine dream by summiting Gasherbrum II, surviving -50 degree temperatures and a massive avalanche. Richards captured both the glory and the pain of their adventure in this raw and moving, first-person look at modern super-alpinism.

I LOVED this shorty documentary!! Real feelings went into it. I don’t know how they do it. I once was stranded for over 24 hours in the worst blizzard in my pick up truck an out of gas after only 4 hours. My clothes mostly all wet from trying to hand dig out around my tires. The closest I have to even imagine what it is like to be at 7000 meters and above. He touched on it here. All you do is think about home, warmth, comfort, and those that you love. I was rescued by some huge military looking vehicle that the fire dept owns. They would only take me downtown a small town to their homeless shelter where I spent 2 nights sleeping on a hard floor with no bedding etc but welcomed the warmth. Made me realize How lucky I am after spending time with real homeless people. Rambling on here but that’s how I compare to what these guys go through.

Think of Kukuczka, who smoked a dozen sigarettes and drunk some vodka hours before climbing the most dengerous mountain of the planet. Annapurna. He did it on winter with self made wool clothes and with workers boots. Poles are kings of Himalayas indeed.

Making light of seemingly serious situations is psychologically the best way to deal with them. You perform better, are more relaxed (meaning better bloodflow), and cause less undue stress on yourself. Simone was joking about Denis's near death experience in the cravasse because- what else are you gonna do? Talk about how serious it was and compound the stress even further? Its not like Simone wast aware of how serious the situation was- he's a world class expert. Laugh over spilled milk, then clean it up. Tbh if the narrators commentary wasn't exaggerated, and really was what was going on in his head at the time, he should not have been up there.

Here in Norway there are a few places that the temp can drop to 50 in winter, its very rear but i experienced it some years ago, its insane, the moisture in your nose freezes to ice each time you try to bread. I can't imagine living outside climbing in those temperatures, thees guys are incredible.

Haha, I’ve been at -50 with wind chill on the summit of a mountain in the Canadian Rockies at night in winter alone!! I was wearing old navy fleece pants (with 2 baselayers) and 3 pairs of cheap gloves. I spent about... 90 seconds on the summit! Haha. (I also knew if I got hurt I’d probably wouldn’t last overnight)

This is a beautiful film. Admittedly, I still do not understand the force, the calling that brings people to these beautiful, but desolate places on earth. What is it about themselves that they need to know so badly they would risk a frozen death? I've climbed before, nothing over 10,000 ft, but it was beautiful, serene and I felt such a huge sense of accomplishment. Do these mountaineers become resistant to the feelings of success at lower altitudes and must go ever higher to experience the same joy and euphoria? I'm so glad these men made it off the mountain alive, so many of these videos are about those who didn't. Peace from Canada!

Such a great film. It really moved me. Climbing the mountain appears like human madness, not bravery. But telling about it and making the film is brave!

Throwing their bodies at the most extreme situations hanging by a thin thread of survival just for the rush of it if they can make it out alive. Fuck all that. I tell you what. You want to push your fucking limits? Start by cleaning your fucking house weekly. Do your fucking laundry on time. Give your loved ones enough attention. Be patient in every situation. Yeah thats how you push your limits. Not by fucking yeeting yourself at a mountain.

With winds that fast your tent will literally collapse down to a couple inches from your face and expand back to normal with the gusts. I couldn’t imagine doing what these guys did at 25,000 feet or higher.
