This was one of the most valuable podcasts I've heard. Thank you, Nick. Actually I heard this info several years ago & must've had a lot of resistance to it. I track other parts of my life (food, exercise/activity) and it really works. Why wouldn't I focus on the time I spend on making art & buying back my time to spend more time in the studio -- and to value that time & not get stuck in the unconscious low-self esteem and not valuing my time. Understanding the fear part and overcoming it...YES! I'm excited to track my studio time ... and sales. Very motivating. Thank you again!
I understand the idea of this whole premise, yes, free up your creative time, change your perspective , be more open and that is all so good!.... but for the painters, unforatunatelly realistically hardly possible. How many painters, any of us know personally that sell enough art to be able to have a comfortable life just with the sales of their artwork, so they can pay somebody to do more mundane things about their art preps. And I mean from JUST selling their art, NOT teaching art, nor any other money making art endevours. I know many amazing artists, and none can afford that from selling their art, neither that will make them create and sell more art. Many of these artists teach art, (or of course do other jobs, or are retired or are wealthy enough etc, but that is a different story) to help themselves financially, even those bigger art names, known to us online, who still offer various online art classes and paid art groups and tribes (money making, wonder why?).
Yes well said, and eg CVP from Art2Life is hugely expensive especially here in Australia with the dollar the way it is so they make a ton of money already besides the art sold. And fair enough, but I reckon the whole art thing needs to be talked about a little more honestly in terms of can you live that way, as opposed to what I see as the sweet little Instagram positivity vibes and sayings and pretty things and deception pulling people in. And if you're at all negative or pessimistic about it, there's more of the false positivity where that came from.

Just an aside, at whatcpoint do you draw the line in quantifying the return on your time? Wouldn't you end up being totally transactional if you did a cost benefit analysis on all the time 'spent' during the day? What justifies your being profit motivated about art, but not profit motivated about your other things - other than the market availability and relatively easy pricing of 'things' for sale vs services?
There's the issue of keeping your head up, regardless of lack of sales. You've emphasized that a lot, Nick. Good to hear how we've all been there, and empathize.
But when the art making method used is laborious, and you are just starting out trying to sell your art, and you can only sell at a pittance, you feel pretty frustrated. What if you could get the same result in your completed art by a different, more efficient, approach? That's where practice comes in. The more you do, the more ways you discover to get the results that you are happy with. Until you do it, until you stubbornly persist, attentively, the less likely you'll make the breakthrough discoveries that energize you and creates 'valued art' for others.
Do u get attached to ur paintings? Few years ago I made some paintings, a friend of mine offered to buy one I couldn't bring myself to sell & part with a piece of me I felt was attached to them. How do you make great art from your heart & part with them easily? Much love my Angel ❤❤ ❤

I always find that taking photos of my art, doesn't do it justice...especially if I want to set up an Instagram account or show my work to gallery owners.
Do you get someone to take photos of your art or do you have a good camera that picks up the actual colours properly?
Also do you ever get prints of your artworks, so can sell a number of them, as I've heard some artists do?
I would like to start working on canvas or board.
Can you recommend a company that sells good quality canvas or boards that are worldwide?
I'm from a small city in New Zealand and our art supplies are very limited.

I'm in Australia and it's the postage that's horrendously prohibitive, let alone the price of things with the dollar the way it is atm. You could try dollar stores or Bunnings (if that's also in NZ) for board, they have surprisingly good stuff sometimes. Canvas too.
Try FramesbyDaniel., he stretches canvas on frames on insta in nz , I think hes in Ak
Great podcast thank you! I’m looking for a pathway to follow as an emerging artist. I need to step over that threshold of selling that first painting. What steps do I take? Enter juried competitions but they want a link to website and instagram to see what you’ve done. I have both but not much on instagram as new to social and website is there but not functioning yet. When you are new you don’t have the credibility yet. Display in coffee shops? Approach galleries? (who also want to see what you’ve done). Instagram and website? I know I want to sell online, and be accepted by at least 1 gallery, and ultimately sell most of my work, that’s my goal. So if you have built up some finished work, and want to sell that first painting exactly what do I need to do? That’s the question! Thanks Nic!
Take into consideration that the people in this podcast are making money from other things eg teaching their art process, besides just selling their paintings.
