- On this episode of the podcast, Chewy and Eugene discuss why the idea of “just showing up” is wrong.
We chat about why showing up is important, but just showing up doesn’t necessarily translate to improvement and certainly not being good at BJJ. We also discuss one of the things that will waste the most time and get you mediocre results, what to do to be the best possible grappler you can be, a very important concept for technique development, why more training is not always better, the value of rest days, why Chewy recommends watching matches instead of watching instructionals for newer jiu-jitsu practitioners, the importance of Jiu-Jitsu competitions, the value of getting your mind completely off of Jiu-Jitsu for a short time, what to do if you have trouble focusing, and hen to change up your training intentions.

Thanks Chewy. You are my fav virtual coach. Been training 7 months 2-3 times a week. Won gold in my first tourney few months ago. Got my first stripe last week. Bjj scratches an itch I didnt realize I had. Love the valuable insights dude, the emails are great too
"If you wanna be the best, you gotta show up with intent" 💯
Got so much love for y’all’s
I think the “just show up” common advice originally came up as a way intended to encourage people who are either beginners, or were struggling. However, I think this slogan has turned more into a poor marketing strategy to retain students. So, I am glad that Chewy is taking the time to clarify the concept and keep it real, as always!
Appreciate you checking out the episode!
I feel like it's endearing if your instructor says it in the context of, "just show up, I'll take care of the rest."
Fatigue management is the third most important training principle.
The scroll thing is crazy. I agree and I think we'll look back at social media and smart phones in the same way we look at smoking cigarettes now. It was massively popular and encouraged while being harmful and downplayed about how much damage is being done.
Definitely possible! Appreciate you checking out the episode!
"Love the Football analogy, American Football that is" 🤣
I like the Babe Ruth,, call your shot rolls. I always have an objective. Thanks chewy
