I had the incredible pleasure of meeting & spending lots of quality time with John back in 2021. My wife had a work weekend event in Vegas, filled with evening events. John was the most humble, relaxed, present, curious and warm person there. He talked about his passion for BJJ (being from the northeast ourselves we bonded quickly) and I can honestly say, he played the major role in me now having my blue belt. I was scared to start, but he assured me it was the best thing he ever started. He even came out to another event just because we told him we’d be there. Chatted all night again. We both talked about him for weeks, months and years. We were so incredibly saddened to learn about his untimely passing a few years back. He was a warm light - and we will never forget him. John, if you’re out there somewhere in the ether, I’m doing my best to make you proud as I carry on forwards purple belt and beyond.

At 41:50, the CLA task is to get into an armlock position and hold down with the legs. Student: “Coach, which arm lock? What is an armlock? How do I perform an armlock?” Coach: Sorry, we don’t teach or drill actual techniques. You will master it ecologically. …and go! All kidding aside. Who shows that student the armlock? Or does he just hope to copy it from someone (or learn it from video) and then refines it by regularly tasking? 🙏

I believe the Games/ECO/CLA approach can be critical for the traditionalist to achieve quantum leaps in their skill acquisition. Doing a form of it since the 80’s. As I approach 60 and have witnessed so many good and bad developments in the athletic and sports combat fields, I can’t help to stay motivated and excited to keep learning. BUT… you should always ask yourself: if I ever needed heart or brain surgery, would I want my doctor to have trained ecologically… or through the traditional methods of medicine in a medical university 🙂

My gym is toxic af. cant wait to leave. head instructor hardly there, other coaches dont pay attention, dont promote people who deserve it, promotes others that arent ready, gauntlet, poor outdated instruction, mentality of "if the move doesnt work, do it harder and faster" more common that students either wont tap, OR dont respect the tap. cranking subs because "fuck you on a tuesday night, im tapping a brown belt no matter what." dirty gym, people often get RW and staph, no AC, no heat. and some how its a fairly successful comp gym in SoCal.

I'm so thankful that you take gym cancer seriously. I've noticed most gyms just engage in back talking the mat bully. You'll have a guy *routinely* putting guys in the hospital and the purple and black belts will walk up to the victim in the parking lot and be like "Hey man, sorry about that guy. He rolls like that and we hate it." But they *NEVER* address the mat bully. And that to me is toxic in and of itself.

Federer and Woods are not that different. Both started playing a relatively niche sport at an extremely young age (3 or younger for Federer and from the crib for Woods) and all the way to adulthood. Yes like all boys from Europe who grew up in the 80s and 90s, Federer would have also played soccer. That's not some stroke diversification luck, it just means he was not a recluse so he played soccer like every other kid.

I’ve heard Danaher will start a class by saying something like, “you’ll never take a man’s back if you can’t see the top of his head”, and then sit down. He’s very ecological.

It sounds like you’re saying what Bruce Lee had said. Don’t fear the man that practiced a 1000 kicks one time, but rather the man that has practiced 1 kick a thousand times. That’s technical.

Judo's already an Olympic sport, and BJJ is still close enough that it doesn't make sense for both of them to be in it. Hell, they even thought Judo was too close to wrestling, playing a large role in the loss of newaza skills in a lot of American Judo, because the Olympics wanted more distinction between the two

Chewy, I actually read a very good book that explained the Radium Girls very well. It was called “The Poisoners Handbook” and it was about the advancements made in forensic toxicology during Prohibition Era New York. I would highly recommend it as it’s a great read, extremely well researched, and did a thing I like with books where it blended the real stories with scientific information seamlessly.

I have a funny little story about the skin thing. Once I was making crem brûlée and accidentally touched the tip of the torch to my forearm reaching for something, and it was a round little burn mark on my arm. I went to class, and professor nearly jumped out of his skin, pointed at my arm, and said “WHAT THE F IS THAT!?” I was like, oh, I burnt myself making desserts and he said I nearly gave him a heart attack lol.

I think lazy is code for "I don't actually enjoy rolling". If you really like something, being lazy won't stop you. You are lazy for things you don't really want to do.
