This is a balsa wood rc plane, and it is the first balsa wood rc airplane we have shown on our channel in a very long time. This is the brand new Hanger 9 Ultra Stick PNP 60" rc airplane. Note this is an electric wood plane that assembles in about 10 minutes! We love the way it looks right out of the box! Watch Nate get so nervous during his maiden flight and let us know what you think of this balsa wood rc plane in the comments!

Did you re balance that plane or was the elevator that far down on the 1st flight?
Awww the balsa days of spending weeks to months building. I remember intricate builds that would take a year to construct and the sheer nerves and adrenaline the day I would maiden the first flight. All in all it’s good memories but I love the bnf of today.
I had one of these sticks before you were born. I was taught on one. Awesome plane.
I love it - "I'm not a pro, I just enjoy the hobby." That's my new line, thanks Nate!
I absolutely Love mine. Especially when flying on take off flaps.
I like you thank God in all your videos. You have a great love for Him, your family and your hobby. So authentic
Great plane, and any non crash landing is a good landing in my book👌🏾. What Nate talks about being nervous during maidens is perfectly normal I still get jitters to this day until landings and I'm good 👍🏾.
Keep balsa alive. It's where so many of us started. Would love to see a throwback nitro flight.
My dad use to fly the "Little Stick" back in the 1970s flew great!
Glued many planes back together.
Glad to see pnp balsa 👍
Couldn't agree more! Hopefully people see the value in this airplane 👍😁😎⚓
cool plane and flying
ultra sticks are amazing extremely
aerobatic
Wow great size
Love old school planes
Great review, flight and video. Nate it takes big batteries to maiden flight in a wind like that. Fun and informative.
I love the white/yellow with black markings livery. Flies not too shabby :-D
What a great option! I love wood ✈!
PNP Balsa! Woot!! 👍😁😎⚓
Sweet plane! Love to see when you get really excited with a new R/C, it makes me just as happy to watch. ✨✅✨Your Awesome!
Love the shirt Nate 🤙 and the plane 👍
Great to see you fly a old school kinda plane.Still fly my Super Chipmunk which is a Goldberg kit balsa built on a 0S 60 nitro. But it's fantastic to see old school and new school coming together.Awsome flying young fellow.Enjoyed seeing you out of your comfort zone. Thanks for sharing
Kind of reminds me of my old Midwest Sweet N' Low Stick. Flew that with an OS Max .46 and could really punch some holes in the sky, then slow down beautifully for a landing. Finally crashed it after several fun years of flying. Always thought I would build another one but life just got too hectic. I'm 67 now and retired so maybe now is the time to give it another go. Still have a Bridi Dirty Birdy with an OS Max .46 but that might be a little to fast and furious for my age. Thanks for all your video reviews, really enjoy them.
i stopped making balsa wood rc as first time out smashed into ploor.year making lasted five minutes never again.then smart planes started coming out thinking about as you to make it look so easy now.good video
Wow awesome airplane Nate and Abby watching now and enjoying the video like it and looks great in the air too 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🛫😎☺️👌❤️ awesome
Damn thing sounds like a freak'n TIE fighter! Love it!
i luv it
Cool to get another plane under your belt 🤘on
Nice flying nate! 👍
Thanks Taylor! 👍😁😎⚓
All rc pilots should try a balsa at some point. They have a lovely glide ratio compared to fomies where you need some power/airspeed to land. Prob why you came in a little hot, i love how you can pretty much cut the power and glide them in and they just hang in the air!Great vid.
She a quick bird, hence the fast landing. Still a great flight. Really like it 👍🏻
You can set up thrust reversing with its Avian ESC, it will stop in less than 10 feet easy.
hot dog! what a great plane and really fine flying - nice work kids
I have only flew balsa airplanes.. usually 40 size glow and a few balsa gliders..when I started flying RC airplanes brushless motors and lipo batteries did not exist..
I do love the brushless motors !! I have a few Balsa airplanes now but they are all electric.. The Four Star 54 ( its set up for electric)
is a very smooth flying machine.. after watching your videos I do want to try some foam models..
Kinda early squad where you guys at happy flying all and got something awesome to watch at lunch time 😎😎😎😎⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️
I got the omp bighorn balsa wood plane. My First balsa wood. Plane. PNP it’s like a timber x. But wood and just as easy to put together. Definitely flys different then foam.
Nice I've been looking for this plane for my birthday
Perfect timing!! This plane is amazing! 👍😁😎⚓
@@TheRcSaylors k will get
WOW!! AWESOME balsa wood plane!! I'm not a flyer (yet), but even I could tell it seems to be MORE SOLID in the air, WIND and all!! Love last landing...it took a little bow in the grass as if to say "Thank YOU very much"!! GREAT MAIDEN flight Nate!! THANKS ABBY for keeping up with him!! 💟👍😘
Thanks! I will be super honest... I was very nervous for this one! It does fly better than most foam planes, but if I crash it I will struggle to repair it vs foam. Loving this plane though! So happy you tuned in to this video!! 😎⚓
@@TheRcSaylors Bigger flies better, Had it not been so windy I bet you wouldn't have been very nervous, it's a proven design and in a decent size, I bet without the wind you would have been so excited you would have sworn off foam planes! (ok maybe not) I get sucked in to all the scale details and complex shapes of foam planes, but all my Balsa stuff flies better.
I love the balsa planes and the Stick is very cool I had 2 balsa trainers 20yrs ago and they flew great I'm glad to see a PAF version I'd like to even see some RTF versions for people like me getting back into flying
Nice flying Nate Great job as always Abby 🔥👍✌️
Think i might get myself one of these. Might be a good introduction into building a balsa plane before my Timber SWS arrives.
I have one and it's a very nice flying airplane. You won't regret buying one.
@robertcampbell6349 just built it up there. First balsa. 10 min job. Looks Absolutely gorgeous! Very stiff and light. Will have to look up on how to do cosmetic repairs as I'd not know where to start if I tore the plastic film.
@@M4rkmcc21 Then plastic film is Ultracoat (AKA Oracover). It's readily available at most hobby shops or you can order it from Horizon or Tower.
I love you Nate and Abbie you two are funny as shit. You guys and ladies are my
Medication at night lol. Keep up the good work
you know if you hit clear on remote it stops that beeping alarm so its not a bother while landing
Balsa wood aircraft ic engine next.
I love the old school wood planes. I built many of them back in the day. If I can ever find the time, I would love to build a Sig 4-star 40 electric. Pretty good pucker Factor when flying if you build one from a kit due to all the hours involved in building it.
Oh yeah! You build one from a kit and fly it once and you are basically done flying forever, lol!! I think that is one of the main reasons I just can't do it anymore. I have very little free time with a two year old, especially to build a large plane. If I crashed it, I'd be devastated!! One reason this PNP is so nice. Time consuming work is done for us 👍😎⚓
You just reviewed the Turbo Timber Evo which may be my next plane. How does this compare? It's 2x as expensive...
Sweet plane!! Second landing was better.
Passando para prestigiar aquele super like no canal 👍👍
Great maiden as always. The only balsa wood plane I ever flew came in a plastic bag. Slide the wings on, attach the nose weight, and throw. Ahh the good old, old, old days. 😂😂😂🤣🤣😂😂😀. Great video 📹 ing as Usual Abby. With those wings would it glide well, that big ole motor notwithstanding. ⚓⚓👍💚👍💜👍.
Sweet plane and nice flying! Brings back memories of the ugly stick I learned on only way better. Abby needs to fly it next??? Nice camera work too!
Super cool old school style plane! Gotta love a balsa bird. You really should have picked up an AeroPlus Titanium when they were so cheap PnP.
Speed was fine you just needed a bit of rudder on landing. Crosswind landings are fun to practice 👍
Nice save on the first landing! This plane looks great, it would be interesting if they offered this with the servos installed with no motor and esc but with a mount for a glow engine. I have the old Eflight 25e running on 4s 3300, a 750w motor, 10x7 prop and thats a great plane. I think it was supposed to originally run on 10cell nicd or nimh. It's very nice on 4s.
I love sticks
Wow yuo are a pilot.gòod flight
Thanks Nick! 👍😁😎⚓
Simple question that I've never really seen addressed in many setup videos: When you calibrate the receiver, like a 637T or 631 in forward programming and it asks you to set the plane on a level surface, do you just set it wheels down or actually level the fuselage to a level flight position? I'm never sure if a flight controller is calibrating level at power up, or from setup, it seems different from plane to plane. Or is forward programming only calibrating the orientation of the receiver inside the plane, and do you have to hold the fuselage level at power up? I ask because this plane, standing on the ground is at quite an angle.
Wheel down 😉 Good question!
Amazing 😍😍😍😍💓💓💓🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Can you do the hill of doom with the dhk maximus?
I think Abby might be the best rc airplane camera person, mad skills with camera
Oh, she 100% is 💯👍😎⚓
I haven't flown a balsa wood airplane since flying those rubber band-powered ones in the 1970s. And those things weren't even R/C -- you wound them up by manually turning the prop clockwise, let 'er rip, and then prayed a bit. 😁😮
I used to have those as a kid too, well before owning any RCs! Always got one at airshows or maybe around the 4th of July at a fair. Very fun and helped lead me to this bird! 👍😁😎⚓
I can’t count how many Ugly Stiks I built when the plans were first published in RC Modeler Magazine. Our club at Randolph AFB used it as our club plane. At club meetings, we cut foam wing panels and traded parts that we cut from templates. I flew with an OS Max 60 motor.
That is extremely awesome Art! A fantastic plane for sure 👍😎😁⚓
@@TheRcSaylors I’ll see if I can dig up a picture or two. The foam core wings really changed the way it flew. Foam core with 1/64 ply shell and monocote skin. You could get very smooth aerodynamics with the servos inside the wing. Fun to build and surely fun to fly.
Well, I scanned a slide but I don’t see how to send it to you.
OMP Hobby has several fantastic balsa models that are PNP and similarly priced to foam. This plane is really cool, with the cutting edge SMART tech. Its priced a little high, but if you bought those components it would add $200+ to any plane's cost. The Stick's are great for sport flying, but I like something a little more scale. This plane appears to be very high quality, but running 6s I kind of expected more.
Got the nitro version. It is an awesome plane.
Hi Nate, been a long time sir. I am a member of a glider club now. I can of course fly my other planes and do. I keep a runway mowed just for my wheeled planes. I am switching all my batteries over to all Smart batterys next year. My wife stated I have too many planes, many still in box. So next year I will upgrade my batterys. I have always wanted a Stick, but do not like the Red German design. That's a nice plane. Glad to see your channel still going. Your daughter must be growing so fast now. Take care. Hi Abby. Miss you two bunches!
Looks like a classic nose heavy aircraft situation ?
I built a 10 s stick it was crazy think i will build another now
Ah to have had the ability to get pre assembled basla kits, back in the day, i would have loved, that, a glider with a 7ft wing span isnt a easy balsa kit to make. And you never will be as nervous as when you spent days or weeks assembling the kit. Course you also are going to care about it allot more than a foam one.
You need to find a balsa stunt plane now, i think you would have a blast with it given your flying ability
Wow this plane is expensive!!! With a 6S battery this is over $600!!! Was this a gift from a sponsor?
3 cheers for Ugly Stick!
Welcome to real rc.
Is it me, or does balsa sound different from foam? Hope you have been brushing up on your balsa skills. Also, that is one thick wing cord, holy cow! Great flying. Keep up the great work!
That's nice plane, When's the next helicopter video coming? We need to see Nate try something bigger then the 230s
So I had a guy that was watching me fly my AeroScout today give me a Hangar 9 Alpha 60. It is brand new in the box still wrapped in the plastic. Just wondering if you have any experience with this plane. It is gas powered. Thanks for any info you may have.
It's a great plane. Flys excellent (of course as it's Hangar 9). I'd swap out the motor for electric personally but could be a pain as plane was not built with consideration for where to put battery and such. Might be easy, might not be. Regardless it's a sweet kit. Still love flying trainers even after all these years.
Hi , can you give us ,the lenght of fuselage and wingspan of this georgous plane (without engine ) please ? thanks
30 years ago, this would have been called the “Ugly Stick”
ugly sticks have round tails
@@MclF01 Exactly!
That first landing, although wasn't completely caught on camera, really looked sketchy.. but what was seen looked pretty cool too. Kinda looks like a big bumblebee being the yellow and black stripes.
How long do we have with the "link" to make sure you all get your benefits from us purchasing through said link? I've only flow "wood" in my RC life....at some point will get one of the many fine foam planes you have covered...but certainly want to look into this "Stick". Have some "nice" plans for one...but just don't have the time right now to "build" (although I love building from plans). Nice video (watch those hay bales). And to us you ARE a Pro Nat. Great job in high wind. [Landing bounces caused by runway grass don't count]. I may have "missed" it...got the cell/battery size...but what size engine?
Balsa planes fly the best
Do they really? Or is more the fact that its more painful to crash? (Genuine question. I’ve flown several foam planes, & own one balsa that hasn’t had its maiden flight, yet!)
@@koalatails6391 I started out flying balsa planes 30 years ago. So my opinion is probably a little biased.
But yes I honestly believe they fly better.
Learn to use a rudder on landing, on the ground, and pull the tail down once its on the ground will help a ton
I learned to fly with a Dura plane.. I'm not sure of the spelling..
PVC plastic fuselage with an aluminum rod for the tail.. foam wings.
That plane looks good. Have you ever flown the pylon racers? I'd like to see you do that sometime
I've never flown the pylon racers, through pylons anyways. That would be really fun!! 👍😁😎⚓
@@TheRcSaylors I just bought a Durafly Goblin, you should add it to the cheap pnp planes week. At $100 you can go 120mph...
The Ultrastick was a Great Planes design, originally a trike. I built one in the nineties, 60 size. The basic difference between it and an Ugly Stick is the shape of the tail. Abby, in general bigger planes are easier to fly. AS3X and SAFE have narrowed the gap but you can still feel the difference. I think you will be pleasantly surprixed.
Great Planes called theirs a "Big Stik" in 20, 40 and 60 sizes. (first just kits, then later on in ARF form) Ultra Stick has always been Hangar 9. (before the Ultra Stick, they had a super stick) But they are all variations of the "ugly" stick which has been around since the late 60s or early 70s. Ugly Stick, Das Ugly Stick Super Stick, Big Stick, Lucky Stick, Sweet Stick, Easy Stick, everyone made one back in the day.
The origin of the Ugly Stik design goes back to the early 1970’s and RC Magazine. I forget the author, but the design was published in the magazine with reduced size plans. I bought full size plans and made templates for all the parts from that. With another flyer in our club, we cut out foam core wings. That added a little weight, but the stiffness seemed to really improve the flight characteristics. With all parts in hand, I could start building one on Monday and fly it Saturday morning. Could have been done sooner but the USAF expected me to show up for work 😂.
Great video. The Draco is a 6s airplane.
Suddenly all my airplanes are coming back to me now! Dang adrenaline!! Also my FW 190, lol... what was I thinking!? 🤣😂⚓
I wonder what the actual survival percentage is for foam vs. balsa planes after a crash. By survival I mean gets repaired to fly again. I bet many more, percentage wise, balsa planes get crashed never to fly again then do foamies.
Good luck on your maiden Abby! [No pressure. 😊]
Why is this video in 360P maximum? The rest of the videos I tried today is up to 4K?
Nate, I think this is the second, new, balsa plane I've seen you fly. The first was a funfly you flew at the same place. You flew it on 3s even if it was a 4-6s plane. I think you gave that one to your dad. There was one other plane you had a short while with an IC engine too. Can't remember if you ever flew it.
And with the wind across the runway you could start from the taxiway straight across the runway.
Winter project: Buy one of the laser cut kit from Banggood, I suggest either the Dancing wing hobbies T12 1200mm trainer or, for a bit more of a challenge, Dancing wing hobbies Piper J3 cub 1800mm.
Ultra Expensive 😬 great video and flying though
👍👍
Hey Nate and Abby, have you ever bought an RC anything from wish? I'm asking because they have great prices on RC planes and other RC stuff but i don't know if the RC stuff is any good. I'd greatly appreciate your expertise, wisdom and thoughts on this. I always super enjoy all your videos guys, keep up the good work! P.S. that planes engine sounds way cool....eeeeeeewwww
Only 360p?
I am not sure what is going on but the last several of your vides when watched on my Window 10 laptop have no audio but on my cell phone the audio plays. I have not seen this with other videos.
That is extremely weird! Also strange is that some people report only being able to watch in 360p. We are giving UA-cam ample time to process our videos, so no clue why that is happening! 🤷♂️👎⚓
Quick question, do you folks still get credit from your past posts! If I order off your link?? From 2 or 3 yrs ago!

I hate the look of these not having a cowl, cockpit but might be worth picking up and designing a cowl/streamlined cockpit that is 3d printed. Hangar 9 defintely makes great stuff. I really do like the PNP aspect. As you say it can be a tedious building a normal ARF. Mainly I hate doing the servos and electric system even though it is pretty easy.
Me and my wife have an old thunder tiger tiger stick that I just maiden a few hours ago. We are only a 45-minute drive from your location not discussing location in public chat. But if you want to do a video with old school airplanes we would love to get together with you guys Don't really care to be on video That's your call but it would make a good episode exploring nitros.
For when you're feeling minimalist haha.
Lol that's right! Performance over scale details 😁⚓
You have a draco, that is 6S
That has reverse thrust when you come in hot towards yourself throw on reverse
Yeah I should have used that one my fast landings! Something I'll have to get used to doing I think 👍😁😎⚓
Haha, kit. Have you actually ever built an old timer SIG kit? You should then you would appreciate some of the history of RC. I think you would enjoy it very much. They are being produced again. Get a 4Star 40 and an OS 46 AX and know what real “building” is. You will have a ball. Oh and use Ultracote.
I am switching a Sig Cadet over to Electric next spring. It's an old Trainer from a club that was very well maintained other than the engine. I scrapped that being it was gummed up and nasty. The club must have flown it and stored it improperly. I do intend to build a kit this winter if I can find what I want.
So nice but soooo expensive
Yeah it is pretty expensive! Balsa prices are sky high due to their use in windmills. Plus you are paying for electronics and somebody to assemble this thing for you 🤷♂️👍😁⚓
@@TheRcSaylors true. Balsa prices have skyrocketed. I've been trying to build a large plane but having issues with getting parts. It's been frustrating. I may just go back to building foamboard planes.
Wood Plane didn't even know they made them

Oh yeah! Super awesome and what this hobby was founded on 👍😁😎⚓
:-) :-) :-)
I loved my Ultra stick, it just didn’t agree with my flying ability.
🤣😂 Lol, sorry to laugh at that, but the way you said it was pretty hilarious! 😁⚓
My ultra stick was an eflite pnp, I destroyed it on the maiden flight, by the time I fixed it, I could fly better. I love your channel.
Before watching this video check out the price!
