- It's only been hours since parliament returned from recess, and Commons speaker John Bercow has wasted no time telling off those who disobey the rules - including the prime minister Boris Johnson.

This guy has got be my favorite character in Brexit season 3. I hardly noticed him in seasons one and two but the writers have really stepped it up and developed the speaker of the house as a central figure. I hope he has a central roll in the plot for season 4.

To resist your own political urges to allow others to debate and run the country in a democratic fashion is no easy task. He performed his duty as a Public servant well, and he has held parliament together in such trying times with attempts at unity, and following procedure. He will be missed

S F I mean, that’s kinda of the point of the Speaker. He is there primarily to maintain order between members and to remind members of the rules of the chamber. Oftentimes this requires that the Speaker remind MP’s of their place.

@@charlesbrown4941 he could easily make 10 times as much if he sought employment outside of politics. In Germany, established politicians who are voted out of office usually end up with posts on multiple supervisory boards of large corporations or are hired as speakers for up to €25k per evening.
So I guess Bercow could make vastly more money than he currently gets.

The point I was making was simply that someone with Bercow's skillset could have chosen to make a truly ridiculous amount of money in a leadership/executive position outside of politics yet accepts a public servant salary that is really quite low in relation to the responsbility of the position.

Unbiased but also make sure parliament is heard as a whole - when prorogation is used - parliament is ignored. Ergo he stands up for parliamentary procedure.

@@greendegenerationx but there has not been a Queen's Speech since 2017. We need one to see what plans this government has. Corbyn asking repeatedly for a GE (which also means Parliament would not sit) but has now backed off when he is slipping back in the polls. The speaker is a remainer who does not mind bending the rules for his chums.

@kinseymilkbone I think UK male politicians do use combs - but I guess the reason they look as though they don't is that many of them walk into Parliament from outside, so their hair has been blown around by the strong winds around Westminster. Very few, if any, male politicians in the UK seem to use hairspray. By contrast, the vast majority of US politicians are chauffeured in to work, and enter Congress from large underground 'parking lots' (car parks). US male politicians' hair is invariably well-coiffed by 'image consultants', and many/most US male politicians regularly use hairspray!

Personally I think JRM was right it's about using parliament to do the right thing, and the brexit vote was about leaving, there are going to be many different politicians in Westminster after the elections!
