Timber Framed Barn Part 25 Rafters and stud walls

- For the last few weeks I have been getting the roof rafters up and getting some studs walls done. Due to a family emergency I am going to be away a little bit on and off for a while so I have recruited Sam to help speed the project along a bit while I am here. Thanks to Sam for his hard work.
You are an amazingly talented young man. Can't believe you have done this build almost entirely alone. Great work.
While watching, I was just thinking what a good idea it was to go solo on the build rather than with all the boys as originally planned. It's been a pleasure to watch this barn build, as usual, with all Kris does.
I can't imagine he doesn't have enough footage for a blooper reel. I can only imagine the amount of times he's tripped on those gappy planks. 😂
Anything is possible when you got that much money….. £800,000 in the bank, £28000 per month, nice if you got it 🤷♂️
@noelwallace5257 What bearing does the size of his wallet have on the work he does?
Equally where do people get this information? Sounds like bs to me.
Thoughts are with you in London, hopefully good news with the family.
As long as you are there supporting, that is what matters.
All the best Kris.
Thoughts and prayers to you and yours. Hope all turns out well.
Kris, your determination, steady disposition and steel nerve daily eclipse my best day. This won't be the first time you have heard it, but you deserve every success. Hundreds of thousands of people feel that way.
Fred Dibna reference, class!
Yes, even as a Dutchman I love the reference.
What is a dibna?
@@garrysekelli6776He was a British steeple jack, steam engine afficiando and TV celebrity. He was a big fan of Victorian engineering and of IK Brunel.
@@garrysekelli6776 Are you annoyed about the missing H or do you realy don't know?
ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=fred+dibnah
Maybe this will help.
@@graemewhite5029 I keep thinking he was a taxi driver/genius - who am I thinking of?
I stopped watching TV a long time ago as UA-cam has proven that people can make better and more engaging content. I think I first started watching this channel after I reviewed a video about the round house and have been here since.
Hey Reggie I never watch TV now. In 2005 I moved from Adelaide to Canberra Australia and the movers broke the TV. So I haven't watched TV since then but sadly I'm bloody addicted to youtube now
Yep, agreed, given up on msm. Subscribe to many interesting UA-camrs. I often wonder why these tv productions have miles of credits at the end when pretty much all the UA-cam channels I watch are filmed and edited by one or two people only and are just as well produced.
you're right about the crappy content TV has to offer anymore
You Sir, stole the words right out of my mouth
Same here👍
Kris life can throw curves at you. Hope everything is going well with you and your family.
Love what you have done since you started your channel.
Will keep you in our thought . Will keep checking in now and again hoping everything turns out fine for you.
I loved the Fred Dibnah reference. He was a one of a kind, can you imagine the society of today , working like him. Impossible. A legend lost in my eyes. He put the modern world to shame.
ua-cam.com/video/w3ma9iYx4rg/v-deo.html
Yes I can, there'd be a lot more dead people. Sometimes I bemoan "health and safety" requirements because they really are overkill sometimes, but overall they are a net positive to society.
Despite that, his steeplejacking skills were amazing and his tenacity is somewhat amiss in modern society. But I still think you'd have brains of bologna to voluntarily do what he did, if there are other options to earn an income.
My personal belief is that not all people are equal in health and safety. A lot of people dont have the balance, confidence in there footings and spacial awareness or an ability to predict how a material will react. fred was confident in his footing and hands at all times and he did a dangerous job for decades and never fell. A lot of people would have fallen. So as a society we need blanket rules because when you are dealing with a large group of people a lot of them will have their lives saved by having these rules. But some people can be safe while working in ways that would be deadly for others. I have worked at hight most of my life. I was an elevator engineer before I moved here to do what I do now. I have also done rock climbing for many years to quite a good level. (had to stop due to getting ligament issues in my elbows) but all those years of climbing and working with heavy stuff at hight has given me a good understanding of what I can and can't do safely. I know my limits very well and when I board out the roof and there won't be anything to grab on to and a big drop if I slip a harness will be getting used for sure.
Well in my younger days I was much the same, but now I'll be looking for a safe point on a chair 😆
@@cmmarttiI was a Health and Safety risk assessor for 30 years, everything from buildings, fire and the workplace. Believe me when I say I was amazed how some of the accidents I had to investigate, involving so called adults, I found it incredible that those people managed to get out of bed without killing themselves! We have Health and Safety because some idiot has caused an accident by being a total idiot, not only hurting or killing themselves, but because they've done it to someone else as well.
Jeepers, Kris! You are SUCH a shot in the arm for we procrastinators out here! Thank you! 😃
That's pure genius Kris. You sure you're building a barn and not a medieval hall or something. I can't wait to see it once it's finished.
you are i think the most unassuming strong man do anything bloke i have the pleasure of watching, hope you and yours are well
Hey Kris, hope you're doing well. It's been a month or so since your last video and I know that is probably just because you're really busy, but it would be great to get a community post or a even a short video or an Instagram update or something to let us know you're well. And, if you are well, when your next video is due and what to expect from it. Take care Kris.
EDIT: I just remembered you saying in your last video you had family stuff you had been attending to. Hope everything is ok.
I am sorry that you have somebody ill, who you care about. This sort of thing creep up on us, just when we are getting used to being an adult. I send Dot, you, and your family my best wishes.
Kris, you are an inspiration for patience and fortitude. Keep up the great work! 🙂. Greetings from Oz.
Wow Kris and a Tally Ho episode both on Saturday night what's not to be excited about.
I used to go clubbing on a Saturday night. Now i get excited watching construction and boatbuilding youtube videos among others.,(check also AntsPants hilarious do it all channel) he is a friday night guy, so you can have a higher weekend dose of immense viewing pleasure of watching others work.😅
First sea trial for Tally Ho 👍
Krisb for the land structures, and leo for the sea. I'm waiting for Kris' new introduction: "hi, I'm Kris a farmer, hydro & solar engineer, and a builder and I bought a farm for one dollar, and im building a home from the ground up"!
Love them both!
I spend the day rebuilding someone’s deck, get home tired, aches, Chris has a new video out: Hold my beer while I waltz across this timber roof and cut perfect rafters (which I also milled) by hand. What a beast. BEAST.
Absolutely - humbling and inspiring in good measure.
This is like watching a renowned artist create a one of a kind piece.
Kris, you are at the age when family health problems start to grow. Sad, but coming to more family. Life cycle. Thanks for all your video's.
Thanks for videography Dot…appreciated by all of us! 👍🏴
Saved this for the evening just so I could watch it in peace. Barn looks amazing with the stud walls going in!
Don't want to be a pest Kris. Just wanting to send best wishes, from our family to yours.
You have a lot of support out here. You have given plenty to us.
Working with your hand and mind , Nothing is impossible for you. Truly inspirational.
Fred was a top bloke as are you Kris👍
For the second year running I've avoided firewood into and out of the trailer. As I cut and split the logs I now put them on pallets which can dry in a paddock over summer and then come autumn it's easy to move the pallets over to the log shed. Instead of: split into trailer; out of trailer onto drying area, load into trailer to move, out of trailer to shed I now have: split logs, onto pallets, tractor move to drying area, tractor move to shed so handle them half as much.
You are one of those guys that a “feel good watch”.. genuinely shouted ‘GET IN’ when I saw you had a new video. Absolutely legend mate! I’ve also learnt so much from watching you.
I have not heard Fred Dibna mentioned for years. I can only imagine that working on the barn and not filming gives you time to think about family. If you have to stop filming to see family then so be it. Take care.
Thank you, Dot, for risking it all to give us a good view. 😅
Kris - Once this is weathertight, you absolutely MUST host a barn dance, for everyone who's played a role! .... Cider-tastic! 😁
Seeing the barn in this stage of completion you can really see how massive the barn really is
👍 You'll be very thankful you are taking the time to make insulated portions!
It's looking amazing, Kris. Dot is a Trojan getting out on your Elf and Safety nightmare. It takes me back to 1956 when I was working on Century House, Waterloo. The safety inspector used go ape about some of the contraptions we rigged up to work on. But I'm still here. Strength to yours and Dot's elbows. I hope all goes well in London.
Just incredible with your hands!!! Amazing!!! 😮
Hi kris. Mr farmcraft101 built a simple solution to avoid handling logs twice. (From pile to trailer... trailer to store). He built a strong pallet frame with sides. Filed it at the pile and Lifted and transported it to the pile. Parked whole thing near where he wanted it. Kudos to him. You've got the tractor forks... dave
I couldn't hope to ever build something like this but as long as its construction is here for me to witness, I'll have witnessed art/craft that will stand for a long time.
it's so relaxing watching you work, obviously not so relaxing for you but watching this mamoth building take shape is fantastic :)
Excellent work Kris, love the homage to Fred - he would have been proud of you and your work.😀👍
I miss you Kris 💌 hope all is well, looking forward to the next movie!
Love the platform you made, that's what building is all about.
This guy is incredible just taking everything in his stride and getting it done
It i really satisfying watchnig someone poor as much love into heir craft as you do, Squire Thanks for sharing.
I m really impressed by what you have achieved man. One can see that you love what you do
Good on Dot for going out on the rig!
Fred is one of my favourite humans to have lived, he was a legend. Sorry to hear about your family health issues.
Hope you're well mate. Wishing you and dot all the best ❤
Not often Kris syas "i cant film this".
Keep it safe, we enjoy the content too much for you to jeopardize it all for "that one shot".
🤜🤛
🍻
Hey Kris, Good to hear from you again. We enjoy watching your journey in life in your World.
This is so beautiful Kris. You are so clever ❤
This is probably the most over engineered barn iv ever seen , I in no means am trying to insult you , iv been a fan and followed you from you building the round house to now and don’t think iv missed an episode .. your design and determination are inspiring .. I always look forward to your posts .. 👍
Love all your hard work Kris and the Barn is going to be amazing once you finish.....
The weekend can begin :)
Great timber framing update! Love all the videos, but the barn build is a favorite for sure.
Massive amount of work done there mate keep it up! 💪
I will never have the skill you have, Kris. And truthfully I am not motivated enough to go there, I enjoy the modern life. That said, I have watched your videos for many years now and seeing you 'grow up' and doing what you love and getting better at it constantly, making things bigger and better, making a life for yourself that you love is really awesome to see. Keep it up :) [Edit] and now watching this, I hope your nearest are doing well. Best wishes.
It must be incredibly rewarding as a craftsman to be building something that will almost certainly outlast you. A testament to human resourcefulness and a real credit to your art.
It’s incredibly satisfying to watch the progress on the barn. So sorry for your family’s distress. Praying for good results and healing.
Hi Kris, checking in daily over here. hope you and the family are ok. take care, missing you
Great to see more progress Kris! Hope your family member gets on the mend quickly
Here's hoping you and your family are ok Kris... take care and be safe!
Stunning progress! You are such a creative man! Best Regards from Austria ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤍
Hi, I have just finished watching the wood wool product being made, it was fascinating as the strands of wood were shaved off in about a tenth of a milometer and the logs were shaved rather than cut.
Love this project. Quality of your work is as expected. And it's a barn... right? Well insulated barn with beautiful views that you do NOT intend to live in....
Been watching since before that was a weed covered patch of ground and what a difference you've made. I really find it a soothing thing
seeing you work on first milling then the planing to the final placement of each board. The care you take making and "fixing" each piece is
what I like.
Can't say anything that has been already said by your followers but I can back all the good that they have mentioned and more. You are
an institution!!! Rafters look great and after the stud walls you have built on the top level I'm wondering if you are still getting that wobble
you were talking about earlier. If present will it go away when you build the bottom level stud walls? All in all I so enjoy your videos. I also
like the way you talk us through with what you are doing with each project. Makes me feel as if I'm there taking notes along side of you.
Your videos are on a level all their own. Keep up the good work.....A healthy ""GOOD ON YOU!!!"" Me southern AZ. (USA)
Sending You and Dot, a bag full of Peace, take care. 👝☺🍀
Looking forward to the next video kris! Keep up the hard work it’s looking brilliant 👍💪
Kris hope you are okay. Bit concerned for you. Hope you okay and things got resolved with the family. Positive thoughts to you all.
When I see you working so hard on your own I wish I could be there to give you a hand... unfortunately I am in Australia. Well done mate you are awesome.
loved the fred dibnah reference. steeple jacks were a different breed. "one mistake and it's half a day out with the undertaker"
Simply glorious. I haven't checked in for a while and the scale of the project is epic ;)
Brilliant job. Love the channel
It's mad what you've achieved mate. Well done. Been watching quite a few years now.
As usual a brilliant video!!! Such good results, must be so satisfying Chris, and you should be proud of yourself.!!!!! XOXO
Well, its always a pleasure to watch you work and hear your thoughts on just about anything you do. BUT....its a rare treat to see you interact with Dot. My wife would never get up on a Fred Dibna scaffold to provide some filming. Hats off to you Dot!
Most comments here say what I would. So I just add that it looks lovely, homely and comforting. So do the chicken running around and pecking at stuff! :)
Best wishes for your family!
the rain that gives you challenges produces beautiful grass for the animals. In Central Texas we are often short of such fine rain
beautiful view up there. i can't wait for the roof to get covered because i have anxiety every week about the weather running your woodwork so far
Nice lines, a bit of care makes all the difference. Cheers
Dude, this is one bloody well designed, and constructed Barn. Looking very very good, have to admit, I'm n little bit jealous.... well done 👍
looking the real deal now kris , nearly there looks brill, a hell of a lot of hard work since camping in winter eh/. hope every things ok down London.
Fingers, legs and eyes all crossed that the family are ok Kris.
The barn is really coming together and looking awesome but I think we need to invent some sort of hover/gravity belt for you and Dot 😁
Been checking for weeks to see your next video…good work Kris.👍🏴
You are going to have the coolest barn
love your stuff from day one .. I really hope you take a step back and look your surroundings
😮Hope you are doing well and in good health. I worry about you if I haven't seen you post anything for a while.
Kris,
You have a tractor with a FEL.
Could you get some IBCs and take the plastic tanks out of the steel frames.
Fill the IBC frames with your firewood straight off the sawbench.
Take one IBC tank and cut it diagonally (top left to bottom right corners).
One of these halves can be the roof over a cage of firewood....
Now just leave the IBC out in any location that gets the most sunlight and wind.
At the end of the summer FEL those cages onto the trailer and move them to the woodstack...all nice and dried out...
That way you only have to handle the firewood twice...
and if you want to sell some off....
take the cage on the trailer straight to the customer...and tip it out.
It’s unbelievable how properly you do everything. Those internal walls i would just have fitted straight to the main frame.
Good work sir - Looking good . I as well liked the Fred Dibnah reference ! Quite the fella
All the best to you and the fam mate.
It is an amazing building, such an accomplishment, great to be able to follow along, thanks.
Kris I hope your family situation is not terminal, I had a very similar situation last month. I didn't make it in time though we buried our mother last week.
You are in my thoughts and I hope all is well.
Kris said his mother was not well.
Just joining the dots here... hope I am wrong, but wishing him all the best.
A few people hassling him in comments for not posting etc. Chill out, sit down and realise he shares content because he chooses to.
Sometimes life has other ideas.
Stop being entitled.
I realy apreciate the mind set of this build 👍
Fred would be proud !
Beautiful weathered look already to the main timbers.
I liked your 'Fred' reference, I'm sure he would have admired your work, if he ever had a computer that is. Great video, thanks Chris.
What an incredible structure! It is marvelous! And in the middle of such a beautiful countryside. Bird song while you are working, that's grounding, to be tied to nature.
Dot is looking well. She's a good lass. Good of John to come and help, too.
Thank you for the lovely visit!
Three quarters of the battle is recognizing what makes a good piece of lumber and what just will not do. Thanks for pointing out the difference.
that fly over shot while you're working on the rafters, with you on it for scale, shows how big and how much work you've been doing and how much to go
Wonderful progress. I get a bit fatigued just watching all of the physical effort that is required in building your barn and other projects! Keep up the good work. You're an inspiration to all of us who dream of accomplishing works of our own.
Hope your family member in the hospital is getting better. Anyway, really like how the posts and beams are weathering. They will give the barn an older feeling when it's done with them being weathered like that.
Kris, so good to see another video. Just wondered why you use a tape to measure the spacings? Wouldn't a story stick be simpler and more consistent?
Accomplished a lot this video. It is coming along nicely.
