Oh, I really like this 2 drummer set-up, It's like Chris Cutler and Scott Krauss teased echother and made the sound funnier. And it sure was fun to watch, Cutlers long arms playing!
No I don't think so; he's Chris Cutler, one of the founder members of the british band Henry Cow. Pere Ubu with David Thomas has a pretty interesting story. David Thomas has on-and-off Pere Ubu collaborated with a number of other knowned musicians, among them Richard Thompson. Musicians that has been open for a wider interpretation of music whatsoever. Mentioning Richard Thompson; he made two records with "French, Frith, Kaiser, Thompson" late 80's early 90's. And look up Henry Kaiser, he and Richard has made some pretty unique stuff live!😄
SHITTR And I know it's not, but one of the drummers seriously looks like The Pixies drummer And I think David Thomas could be the U.S version of Mark E. Smith, kind of
Yes, you are correct: the drummer is not from the Pixies. You are probably referring to Chris Cutler, drummer-extraordinaire, who bears a passing resemblence... As far as David Thomas vs. Mark E. Smith is concerned, Mr. Thomas was already active in music years before The Fall came about [although both groups owe a great deal to the influence of Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart]. Ta!
What's for afters? I think if you're commenting on an Ubu video you're at least aware in passing of Beefheart's work (as it happens I'm a pretty big Beefheart aficionado). Also I wasn't referring to the timeline, just the general, overall "vibe" of the "dictatorial frontman"-type paradigm. Maybe David Thomas is just more...gracious? about it?! If you go on Ubuwerx it's much more apparent. Cheers, though--I didn't realise that it was Chris Cutler, Ubu have had so many line up changes it's hard to keep track (no mistaking Eric Drew Feldman, though :) ).
For sure, the "dictatorial frontman" vibe you mention, runs through each of the principals named [Thomas, Smith & Van Vliet]. All three were/are quite serious about their respective visions, and perhaps Mr. Thomas was more gracious, as you say... Beefheart could be, especially in his later career, from most reports [and you also have that direct connection with Eric Drew Feldman having been involved with so many collaborators of the Beefheart/Ubu groups]. While I would never claim to be an expert on any of these great groups, I've certainly listened to each of them enough, to not be a "novice" ;) Nice to have had this conversation, and glad you stopped by!
What's for afters? Have you read John French's book "Through The Eyes of Magic"? Taken together with Harkelroad's book it paints a pretty damning picture of Don. I could probably do "The Music of Captain Beefheart" as my Mastermind speciality (but an actor who used to be in Eastenders already did it on Celebrity Mastermind). Thanks mate always good to talk to someone who knows good music! "If you've got ears, you gotta listen".
Sorry to say that I haven't read either tome.... raising a young family in my later years is a major drain on free time ;) I've seen elsewhere, that Mr. French had revealed some grueling times, getting the songs "right". One thing I'd have to admit: those with a vision, and willing to stick to it, often end up with some gems [as far as the music is concerned], but it is often the case, that they can often be merciless to others, in their efforts to reach that vision. Oh well, back to my chores, and the tunes, which help to keep me balanced. Pleased to have had this conversation. Cheers!
This band! When I find it again, concert video or pure audio, I find that my mood rises and I laugh occasionally just like that! Love!
Pere Ubu doing pop and still sound bonkers. Essential
How in the world could 6 people have the thoughts and the time to not like this....
This band really gives me a special "up" treat now and then:-) And these two songs are stuck in my brain!
David Thomas is my hero.
Greatest entertainer west Cleveland ever produced. That includes Drew.
I always loved Pere Ubu. When Jim Jones was on guitar, it was love squared.
Jim Jones was a genius. Perfect!
Have him in my new wave collection!
thank you so much for this video. huge pere ubu aficionado here. cheers!
My pleasure! Great to hear from another fan of the group, and thanks for the nod of approval for the clip!
