- When you run out of storage on your QNAP NAS it's possible to swap your disks out for higher capacity drives without loosing any data. In this video we go through the whole process step by step, changing from WD Red 4TB to Seagate Ironwolf Pro 10TB drives.

Thank you so much for this. I ran through this process on Friday into Saturday, upgrading to 12TB HDDs. As far as I can tell, everything went smoothly. This video was a great help. It was a long long process though, as the video makes clear. For me the RAID rebuild after the first disk swap took just over 9 hours. The second disk was quicker at around 7 hours. The final sync to extend the capacity started at around 9/9.30 am on the Saturday and didn't complete till 8.30pm that evening. I'm sure there are all kinds of factors that go into those numbers but can't fault how smooth the process is.
Nice video! Does it matter what kind of volume type you use (static, thick or thin)? Or can you expand to a larger drive without data loss and at the same time get the extra space of the new drive (like you demonstrate here on your video) no matter the type of volume??

Thanks. The layout of the controls is clunky to say the least. You should be able to expand the volume from the main storage screen, not have to go into the replace disk by disk page.
But I will say, overall QNAP handles this very gracefully, once you figure out where the right options are.

Basically, is it possible to just replace a single drive in a RAID 5 configuration, instead of all of the drives when using "replace drives one by one"?
Very informative, thank you. I have a question. You only lost 1TB of storage space. I upgraded my system from 4x8tb to 4x16tb drives. But my allocation is saying I will only have 43tb available. Running Raid5 on Storage Pool 1. Is this due to running Raid5? or do I have something amiss? Thanks in advance
Great video, after you have added or upgraded all disks (using replace one by one) and you are ready to expand the capacity - do you only have to expand the capacity on one disk or do you have to do that also 4 times if you have 4 disks in NAS.
He was working within a pool so he made the pool bigger. If he was working within a volume (rather than a pool) then he couldn't.

Thanks for the video! I currently actually having a nas consisting 4 disks, and actually planning to replace all of them to only 3 disks with larger storage for each disk, is it possible for this situation? Or if there are any other methods to make this work? Thanks!
I don't believe that's possible. Assuming you set it up as RAID 5, you can add disks, but not remove disks from a RAID 5 array. I think it would actually be fastest to get the three larger disks, back up your existing data, and then create the new RAID 5 array and recover it from your backup.
Moving from A Synology DS212J to a Qnap TS 453A. Have 32 drives, 1GB and a 3.4GB, latter has all my data on it. I initialized my QNAP NAS with my smaller drive, but now I need to add my drive to it somehow containing all my data. How do I do that without any data loss? Any ideas / tips? Thanks in advance!

How to upgrade with larger disc if i have only one disc installed in bay 1 out of two bays?
if you only have a single disk installed then you'll need to backup to an externally connected USB drive. Once backed up, insert two disks of the same size, create a RAID 1 storage group, create your volumes and files systems and then restore the data from the USB drive. If you don't want to use RAID 1 and 2 disks then just backup to the external USB drive, remove the 1 disk, add the new disk, create your system volume and any other volume and then restore the data from the USB drive.
I'm not sure why you're using a QNAP with only 1 drive installed though. if you're only using a single hard disk then you may as well just use a locally attached USB drive.

If you're expanding the volume then yes, your users will still be able to access the data. If you're shrinking the volume then it will not be accessible.
is it possible to install 4TB and 10TB drives on the same qnap bro?
It is, however it also depends on the RAID version your using and number of drives your NAS holds. If you have a 8 bay NAS then you can create different storage pools based on drives and sizes. The best solution is to have a RAID array with same sized drives. If your NAS only has 2 bays then you'll need the same sized drives if your using RAID 1. If you're using RAID 0 then you can use different sized drives, however you won't have any redundancy.
In an 8 bay NAS then you could have 4 x 2TB drives in one RAID 5 array and 4 x 10TB drives in another RAID 5 array and then utilise the 2 arrays in a single storage pool.
@@FrimleyComputing thank bro.i have qnap 10 trays.3 bays for 4TB hard drives and one tray for 10TB drives. I inserted the 10TB drive and it still works.earlier I bought the wrong 10TB drive

It is indeed! I just ran a RAID rebuild on a TS251+ with a single volume and 2 x 4TB HDD and it took around 36 hours to complete.
@@FrimleyComputing It's ridiculous isnt it. I I ran 6x4tb drives in a RAID 5 and it took 48 hours!!!
I wish there was a better view to view say....1000 folders... other than a single line, small icons or large. In windows explorer, you can view a list but also multiple columns and you can get more information on the screen when you are looking for something.... know what I mean?
@@FrimleyComputing Same. Expanding a RAID 1 from 8TB TO 14TB. It's saying 67hrs to sync just the 1st drive [of 2]!! I thought i completely screwed up. It was comforting to see this video actually mention that it takes a long time, except he still kinda under sells it.
