Top job and glad you didn’t hit a tree head-on in the dark 🎉 The DJI is more compelling for most of us as we just don’t go fast enough to stress the stabilisation. But if you’re not riding in low light and a bit of a pro (or semi-pro speeds) it has to be the GoPro. The other point is the DJI is going to be better in the woods: I was at Dyfi today and at one point it was quite dark in lower Swooper and the DJI would have been much better then. Ta!🎉
DJI killed it in Low Light.. Can't say its a great and usable shot but compared to the 13. Anyway, both are great daylight action cams. Thanks for the comparison shots!
First review I have seen testing the subject tracking with cycling, a feature I am very interested in. My take was it's didn't add anything much. In fact I think perhaps the tighter view hindered the framing over the non-tracking wide-view. Perhaps might work better in a road cycling scenario, recording a cyclist behind you where the auto panning might come into it's own more. So won't disregard fully, but a bit underwhelmed. Overall I think the Action 5 Pro shone over the GoPro in features, value and footage with out the box colour profiles. But with subject tracking perhaps not such an important feature, I think I will have to see if a deal on an Action 4 comes along or if I decide to splash some cash on the 5.
Hi, it was a very good comparison. I could not determine which camera's performance was better in stabilizer! In terms of stabilization, which camera do you think had better performance.. And in general, which camera do you think is more worth buying?
Both are about the same stability-wise. As for which one to buy…the DJI has lots of strong points, I think it’s the better camera overall especially if you want to use the audio from it or vlog with it. That said, I think the GoPro with the wide lens mod gives the best riding pov shots. So buy the DJI if you want a versatile camera, buy the GoPro and lens mod if you’re only wanting the best pov stuff
@ no idea about the footage quality in snow but all the bonuses about how the DJI is built, lack of glitches and better battery life would still put it in the lead for me
Are the lenses etc going to work with a hero 14 as nothing now is backwards compatible and the magnetic mount rattles like mad you hear it on other videos rattling its been a big complaint already
I switched from GoPro to DJI but if I put it in on my chest mount the stabilization is terrible, GoPro is much better, have you noticed this? with dji i have to use rocksteady+ which reduces the field of view
At the end of testing could or will you say which footage looks real..like gopro green leaves or action brighter leaves..say which one looks to how things are in reality.. good video..i will look at back catalogue
Now I’m no pro on cameras but will say this I back go pro but go pro does not back me. I bought every go pro out to date well not the 13. They send them to people who do things I do as well not popular I guess. But when you buy the product over n over and spoke to go pro them self. They don’t even send me a decal.
Great video Ali. Love the detail. I've been lucky enough to have had the OA4, OA5, Hero12 and Hero 13. In defence of GoPro they are doing wonders with that sensor but... The reality is they are still using a smaller, outdated sensor. Im not enjoying the distortion on the Hero cameras, and the big one for me, as a mountain biker, is the lowlight. It's not even close between DJI and the Heros. The other thing that is noticeable in your video is GoPro still have an issue with that really muffled sound. It didn't seem to impact the bike sounds too much, but it is really noticeable when you speak. I saw someone saying they've dropped the bitrate on OA5 at 4K30? Ill be honest, I think the footage looks better compared to OA4 so not sure how they are achieving that. Either way, I can reassure people that the footage quality from the OA5 is really good. Thanks for your time and efforts Ali.
Thanks Ali for putting so much effort into this video. I wanted to ask both streetpigeonmtb and Ali their opinion on stabilization. I have been using a Hero 9 & recently Hero 13 . My footage looks great when we are traveling Southern Utah, with open terrain and good sunlight. When at home in the Pacific Northwest with the trees both GoPros struggle with image stabilization. I like the new mod lens on the GP13 with camera set on wide and a chest mount , but often on my local trails the footage is almost useless due to the stability of the camera. In the clips the dynamic range of the DJI looks much better but I could not tell about stability . Is it worth having a second camera just for low light conditions?
@bryanklinginsmith3056 hey Bryan. Yes, I think it is worth having a camera for lowlight. The main reason I ended up switching to DJI was because I ride in so much lowlight conditions and I need clear, stabilised footage. What I will say is you still need to dial in the settings, even on the DJI. The main difference with the DJI is that you can set a shutter range. This allows you to have an auto shutter speed but stop the shutter going too slow - it's actually the low shutter speeds which compromise the stabilisation. You can do this on GoPro as well but you need to install the GoPro Labs firmware.
Thanks for the feedback. What is the lowest shutter speed you recommend for good stabilization ? I typically leave it on auto, with my GoPro. I did not know you could limit it on the DJI .
DJI reply about bitrate Hello! Thank you for your question. A higher bitrate can significantly reduce the camera's battery life and lead to excessive heating. So lowering the video bitrate. Our algorithms help to mitigate the quality loss that may occur from this adjustment. We also value your feedback But still what quality loss with a 40mp sensor new sensor!
I’d be interested to see a detailed comparison again the GoPro’s image quality. A lower bit rate more efficiently encoded could still potentially look better than a poorly encoded higher bit rate. Some argue that the GoPro bit rate is too high given the image quality you get out of it. To my eye though, it looks like the GoPro may have lost its crown.
