I disagree. My kids, and now THEIR kids, were brought up on 60’s & 70’s soul and rock and they all love it because in my grandkids words ‘todays music sucks’ I think this means it’s not very good. Wouldn’t know,I’m stuck in that glorious era!
This song is actually very sad--the lyrics say, "I've got nothin' to live for, seems like nothin' gonna come my way" also, "This loneliness won't leave me alone." He's not wasting time enjoying life--he's wasting time because he's alone and has nothing.

He was one of the greats, but props too to the backing band. This was the legendary Stax band of Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Al Jackson Jr., and Booker T Jones. They were so great that you really don't even notice them in the song, because they played 100% to the song. Musical perfection!
I thank my lucky stars that Stax records came to be. Such great musicians, writers, arrangers and singers resulted and we, and the world are the fortunate recipients.
I wore this 45 out as a kid. I spent much of my youth fishing at docks on the bay. Grew up out there. Song had meaning to me, as sitting out there, in the fog, fog horns blaring, brings out a melancholy that is hard to describe. This song captures that.
If there was a heart id be hearting this. My dad requested this at his funeral before he passed. Only somg he wanted to leave this mortal coil to. Otis redding was a phenomena of talent. One of those there wont ever be another of. Love this thank you 🔥💯💢❤️
Redding forgot what he was going to sing at the end so he whistled just as a placeholder. He planned to come back to the studio and sing the last verse and add some finishing touches he had discussed with Steve Cropper but was killed before he had the chance. Cropper, who co-wrote the song, was ordered to mix it and finish it two days after Redding died so it could be released immediately (the record company wanted to put it out right away to capitalize on Redding's death). Cropper said it was the hardest thing he ever did. He added the seagull and ocean sounds because Redding had indicated he wanted that, and left in the whistling.
Asia & BJ, You'll love his "Try A Little Tenderness", "These Arms Of Mine" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long" !!! A truly special artist who influenced many after him. edit- he whistled at the end because the lyrics weren't finished, a great outro!
@@surlechapeau I love the film it's gritty and has a lot of those types of songs all sung by a unknown cast.one of the women backing singer's was the girl who was high on the sofa in pulp fiction the scene with Eric stolz, Rosanna arquette,John travolta and Uma Thurman.
I've heard this song about 8 billion times since I was a little kid and it still gets me every time. Such a beautiful beautiful song and what a gentle and emotive voice. I think it's a song about disillusionment and having traveled all over and still not having found what he's looking for. You can hear the pain and the loneliness and the desolation in his voice. I have spent a lot of time around the ocean and I have literally sat on a dock and watched ships and boats come and go at sunset and it is such a meditative state. You rest your weary body and just feel whatever you're feeling and just kind of detach. There's a certain beauty in it.
His final recording. He was to record a song written by the Bee Gees, To Love Somebody, but it wasn't to be. When the Bee Gees recorded it, they dedicated it to Otis's memory.
I’m sure someone else will comment this but “Sitting on the Dock the Bay” was the first single to hit #1 on the charts posthumously. Bless, Otis. GOAT. “Try a Little Tenderness” is probably the best build up of a song EVER.
Otis never got to finish this song this was why he started whistling at the end. His plan was to finish but then the plane crashed. The song is about a man mired in loneliness and depression. The song was written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper. Cropper was the guitarist on this song. RIP Otis Redding (December 10, 1967). He was only 26 years old. Thank you for this reaction of this great song.
When you're ready for more from the great Otis Redding, check out "Try A Little Tenderness", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Hard To Handle", and "Mr. Pitiful" among others.
Otis is in my top 5 of favorite artists. Such a wealth of music in such a short time. I wasn’t around when he as alive but I’m lucky to have his great music to enjoy.
I met Otis Redding's wife and daughter many many moons ago... I was working for furniture delivery outlet and I delivered a couch to his daughter's house... very nice, down-to-earth people. I wish I could've spent more time visiting with them
Gone too soon.So much soul.He died before he could finish this song. The whistling was just his filler until he could get back to the studio.I think the song tells about a journey, looking for something. He goes a long way and he ends up alone and lonely.
Love Otis Redding nicknamed the "King of Soul". Sadly he died in 1967 in a plane crash at only the age of 26. But he left us some beautiful music. Some of my favorites are "Try A Little Tenderness", "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", "Respect", "These Arms Of Mine", I've Been Loving You Too Long" etc.
I was at the Hard Rock Hotel, in Las Vegas, and they had the mangled piece of the plane, in a frame. It simply read "Otis". That was a tragic event, that robbed us, of one of the greatest soul singers ever. I was emotionally blindsided, just seeing that. Such a heartbreak.
Otis Redding singing live at Monterey Pop is one of my favourite concert performances ever, especially "I've Been Loving You Too Long", his most soulful of performances.
one of the best relaxing songs ever written and sung by otis pure bliss.. he is just sitting like on a sunny day when you go out and just sit down and relax yourself and take a step back from life.... dosent matter what your watching its all the same.
Late one night Otis was working on this track beeing convinced it would be his first #1 on the Billboard charts. So he called up the co-writer/guitarist Steve Cropper in the middle of the night very excited and told him about this song. Steve was like "sounds good man but can me talk about it in the studio tomorrow it's like the middle of the night!" Turned out Otis prediction/feeling was right the song did reach #1 but unfortunately he never got to experience it. The song was released posthumously since he died in a plane crash 1968. Stories says that he was Mr 100 % always went all in regardless if it was on stage or in the studio.
I think it's a fully a true story, I read that he was truly just sittin on the dock of the bay watching the hippies in San Francisco and wrote the song on the spot. Talk about grabbing the vibe, you can feel the inspiration. And it makes you want to get an easy chair and sit back somewhere and watch things unfold.
Like the gist of your comment ! Reminds me of the class in Creative Writing I took in college when the teacher dispatched us to walk around the neighborhood and write about something we saw. Ironically I wrote a little piece about a dock on the nearby bay. BTW I looked it up recently and learned he was actually not in SF, but across The Bay over in Sausalito.
You all have to watch anything Otis did live at Monterey Pop. The flower children had no idea who the Memphis soul cat with the great band was and were completely blown away by Otis.
His recording times of this song were almost like a bad omen. He first started this recording on Nov. 22 (the anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination) And finished on Dec. 7th. (anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor). He died just 3 days later. He predicted that the song was going to be his first number 1 song. He was so right! It also won a number of awards.
As a “white” pre teen in the sixties, living in the suburbs, his talents reached through the tube and grabbed me. One of a very few black artists given a TV show in prime time in the 60’s. A musical hero I still miss. What could have been?! 🤘😎
