Rapper/Producer 30KillaBeatz/RIch Goat was born Brandon Beasley in Detroit Michigan, 30K was raised by his hard-working mother and stepfather in multiple locations such as Virginia, Tennessee, Germany, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Hawaii because of his father's affiliation with the military. He was also known for getting in trouble in school and starting fights. After school, he would go to the Youth Center and wait till his parents picked him up after they got off work. There he saw an old piano that the other kids would play with from time to time. He was amazed and started messing with it himself. He got so good he played one of Beethoven's songs in front of the whole school. All the other parents were amazed and asked his mom if young 30K could teach their kids how to play the piano.

Greetings from KY. This is the way you do it. Great comparison and break down. I own the 103 but was considering the 107. May hang where Im at. My room isnt bad but dont wanna chance that being an issue. Very happy with the 103 and 414 that I have. I have the WA87 but dont think it compares to an actual 87. But its a usable mic also.But not a U87. Im a huge fan and have been for years of the AKG 414 (XLII) but the 103 seems to require less work after recording my voice. Its now my favorite and I never thought Id say that,

Great review man! My wife and I tried a vintage U87 recently and the TLM103. We preferred the TLM103 for the flatter & brighter modern sound. U87's (new and old) have that famous Neumann midrange "honk", but it didn't sound good on her voice. So now we own a TLM103!!

In most cases, U87ai needs EQ and processing to really shine. With some air band boost added, you can make it sound as bright as the TLM103 anytime, but still benefit from this full-bodied midrange detail which makes the U87ai so special.
@@tom_k_d Yea that is true, the U87 needs processing and that midrange is special. On the flip side tho, you can always roll off some top end with a shelf EQ to make it as dull as a U87 if desired, and a great hardware chain can add a some full body midrange to the TLM103 that the mic lacks when it's plugged directly into an interface. Both mics are great for their own reasons! U87 has those mids, and TLM103 does "modern & crisp" very well!
The TLM103 and u87 are both excellent mics, and it's true some voices fit a certain mic better, but a lot of people tend to find the u87 a little too muddy, which a lot of the time is because they haven't hi-passed the lows properly. Cause even though a u87 is almost completely flat, having excess lows on a vocal (usually round that 50-150hz range) will make it sound a lot more boomier, accentuate proximity and be harder to incorporate into a mix
Have you guys tried the M147? Although small I think it is Neumann's warmest mic to date...
As an owner of a vintage U87 I was looking into the TLM103 as an addition for its more modern brighter sound. After seeing this video I'm not so sure because I do like the top-end but I can hear that harshness as well but the airiness is nice... On the other hand the Sony C800 (which is what most pop music is recorded on at studios) is also a very bright mic.
Ever thought about the TLM49? It’s warmer and fuller than the TLM103 so less harsh. You should rent it and do a review or something if you can

There you have it, the transformer smooths out the energy of the capsule and you end up with less plosive issues. Especially S's.
Most definitely the u87 has way better control over plosives. One of the most annoying things about the TLM 103.

Idk if my voice is super aggressive when I rap or speak but when I say b’s and p’s or even sss it’s aggressive and for some reason. The tlm 103 is just picking it up more for me. Thanks for watching 💪🏽

U87ai build quality is much better: U87ai has no SMD components on the PCB, which results in much better serviceability. When a TLM breaks, it can not be fixed on component level, but needs a complete new PCB instead. Sonically, U87ai provides much more mid detail, and takes heavy EQing much better.
