Great advice Dale. All correct. I see this as our greatest threat now. Major problem is that EVERYONE has their own online platform now and many don’t really care if trapping is here in twenty years. They seem to be trying to escalate things to a point of stupidity in hopes of getting “likes”. There’s a major generational disconnect between we older seasoned trappers and the new Facebook trap setters.
Steve I agree with you. It's all about getting views, likes, and shares instead of putting trapping in a positive light. It's not at all headed the right way. Don't get me wrong, there's some great content out there. But it seems like the bad out weighs the good. Thank you for watching
Couldn’t agree more Dale, I have also been guilty of getting into arguments that I should have left alone. When we do that it paints a picture for the antis that we are unhinged. I’ve heard it said that generally 20% of the population is anti and you will never change that, 20% is pro trapping but it’s the 60% in the middle we need to concentrate on. I am a Illinois certified hunting, boating and trapping instructor, in the hunting program I have the opportunity to speak about and promote trapping one thing I stress is while the students may not necessarily be for trapping to be against is cutting the throats of every outdoorsman. The antis start with the small groups and use the momentum to take everything away. We have to work together not only within the trapping community but across the board. If we don’t eventually everyone will loose including the wildlife. I even go so far as to end my presentation by sticking my hand in a foothold just to prove it won’t break bones or cut off appendages. Sad that it’s come to circus sideshow acts to prove the lies wrong. Thanks for another good video, you do an excellent job of promoting trapping and sharing your craft
Thank you Doug I appreciate you. Yes you're absolutely right. None of my kids trap, probably never will. But I know that when it comes time to vote, they won't vote against me. And that's the best we can hope for I believe. The 60% to not vote against us if we educate them properly. Thank you for watching Doug
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said Dale I’ve farmed and trapped all my life. I lobbied many years at our Capitol and in Washington on Pork related legislation. Wording is the key to everything. The smoother and fluent you present yourself the better odds you have by a mile. And you are spot on about the anti’s . Walk away or they will poke and prod away on you until you say something you wished you hadn’t I never miss a video of yours , nice work
It’s called “the death of trapping by 1000 cuts”. As you described trappers using wording/terminology that isn’t appropriate or “off-color” around the general public I liken to pulling the stitches from those cuts!!! On Saturday mornings we listen to the Cinni radio station and this morning there was a podcast about quail hunting and field dog work. The guy mentioned there had been a fisher sighting in OH and he was worried that they would destry fish populations!!!!!! It may sound funny to many of us but it’s far from funny, it shows the serious lack of fundamental outdoor education even by people touting outdoor sports.
Amen Seldom Fales!!! Self education is key!! If you're a car mechanic you sure would not want to give a speech about brain surgery. It's the same with trapping. I sincerely appreciate you watching. Thank you
I had a customer who thought beavers eat fish! A deer hunter. Of course I told him they eat tree bark and aquatic vegetation, and even grass. I almost always get a positive reaction when I mention I trap. In Maryland.
@canislatrans8285 that's fantastic!! Yes it amazes me the folks who claim to be outdoorsmen who don't know the first thing about furbearers. Thank you for watching
Totally agree, though I despise the word humane and refuse to use the word. By the same token I will not use inhumane as well. Reason, I refuse to concede the premise that what I do is somehow worthy of oversight for cruelty and in need of a definition in terms of equality to humanity.
David you are absolutely right about that. Again this goes back to wording and terminology. There has to be a better way to define what we do. Thank you. And thank you for watching too
TC it's not as bad as it's made out to be. We're glad to have you here. If there's anything I can do to help you please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for watching
Good luck with this one Dale. Compared to Canada or some outdoor recreation states Most trappers I talk with DO NOT even know the definition of Habitat, Conservation, or Wildlife Crop and that is solely due to emphasizing the "How To" instead of the Science "WHY". Trapper organizations have a tough time letting go of "Catch" egos and will put a big harvest person up for a popular draw instead of the reasons for wildlife Management. Tools and techniques have come a long way from the 60's but animal behavior is still the same. A person rarely, if ever sees a demo on a fur bearer's life history. Case in point : Years ago a study in PA listed the K (Carrying Capacity) of excellent habitat there was equal to 1 raccoon/1.63 acres. Have you ever experienced a demo on K for furbearers? Simply stated we teach - " duh,,,, set the trap here, catch 400 coons in 1 hour" mentality. Until that changes to lessen the harvest emphasis with these volunteer groups, I doubt you will get positive conversation discussions. Sorry, off my soapbox.................... the mike
I understand what you're saying Mike and yes you're right. My biggest concern though is trappers speaking the right terminology vs giving k factor facts. Most can't do that, nor do they care as you pointed out. But when speaking of types of traps, when speaking of being humane about trapping. Not siding with those against us. Those are the things I'm concerned with and what I was trying to get across in this video. Maybe I did a poor job of that??
You are correct, well said. It doesn’t just stop with the wording that is used, it also goes with the photos and videos that are shown, shared and so forth. We as sportsmen need to make sure we educate the ones that are on the fence as you mentioned. That’s goes for any type of trapping and hunting. Unfortunately the hunting and trapping community is constantly under attack from different anti organizations, but recently I have seen this attack coming within the hunting community.
Yes Rich you're absolutely right. As trappers, hunters and fisherman we should be rallying with each other too. Because I'm here to tell you this exactly how it's going to go down when it happens. Us trappers are going to be the first to go. Then it'll be the dog hunters next. Then the bow hunters. That's how it'll fall. And if we don't start banning together it's fixing to be a real sad day for us all. Thank you for watching Rich. I appreciate you
Your 100 % correct Dale on everything you said. Trappers need to educate themselves every chance they have to make sure that their equipment , and skill level is top notch . Especially with snares , most issues with dispatching the animal quickly comes from the snare not being properly used and set up by the trapper.
You nailed it about calling it a foothold trap. I had some years ago sat in a lecture at a NTA and the MO biologists was calling thr trap a leghold trap then they asked about how to make better PR . I raise my hand told them need to stop calling a leghold and call it a foothold trap . They shut up. Also for you said about trapping on the ballot Massachusetts had that problem and lost trapping ad I know it.
Wonaegun there way worse openings out there then mine as far as name calling BELIEVE ME!!! I appreciate you watching my channel. I really do. But once again you find fault in everything I say or do. If it bothers you that bad? Then please don't watch. You're more than welcome to go watch my friend Trapper J's opening. I think you'll find that once you do, mine is pretty tame
Hey bill, First of all appreciate you being this message up, super important for the longevity of trapping. I agree with what this guy is saying though, leave out the pansy parts etc to start the video. You have a great approach otherwise on the facts and ethics of trapping. But like you said we gotta be on our toes for this and even something as small as the opening can be impactful if we communicate that way. We don’t want to run antis off! We want them to hear we care! Im a furbearer biologist and work on this everyday, trappers are a furbearer biologists greatest asset and I appreciate you trying to get the right message out and just wanted to add a bit to refine that message. Thanks again
@MrJBP3 the reason I had that opening for awhile is because i received a threat by phone from an anti about my channel. And it's been my experience that if they are truly against us, you're not going to change their mind. We need to reach those who are on the fence. Those can be brought over to our side with the right approach and the truth about what we do. I appreciate you. Thank you for watching
Well sir when most people don't study the Bible they are ignorant concerning mans dominion over the animal kingdom. All the animal sacrifices in the O.T. were pictures of the lamb of God in the N.T. the Lord Jesus Christ. I hear what you are saying and I try to keep professional talk about it. I'll be listening to how you talk so set a good example for us. Thanks.
I keep seeing "no-nos" in trapping videos. Non target catches being shown and in 1 recent one a fox paw in a trap, said a mt lion had ripped it out, but no proof shown ( I get it, probably gory fox remains and you know how UA-cam is). Another was catching a cat in a DP and showing it. Then a ranting about catching feral cats while showing them in a trap. Showing caught Canada goose and heron and releasing them. Though this can show they weren't injured other than bruising, but still not good PR. AR trapper did show a dog he caught and let go and was to show the dog was not injured beyond bruising. I'm going to let that one pass since he drove around with the dog to locate the owner to prove his point that the dog's paw was going to be fine. Then the good stuff shown, like body gripped beavers that didn't even move after the trap fired on them, coyotes in CR's just being like a dog on a leash with no injury at all, raccoons that could reach a 2nd DP and had a paw in each DP showing it must not hurt or bother them much to get caught twice.
Canis Latrans there are many positives to be shown, but yeah there's a lot of negatives that don't need to be. We gotta do better. And police not just ourselves but others who we see falling away too. This thing is going to die because of us if we're not careful.
Great point Dale , glad you brought that up.
Thank you Lynn. I appreciate you watching too

A lot of people need to just stay off social media
Exactly Michael. The trouble is that we can't keep the dumbest of us off of it
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said Dale

@@billingsleybrandtrappinglu1531 Probably strange someone from MI would listen to an OH radio station but we like Gary Jeff Walker.
I had a customer who thought beavers eat fish! A deer hunter. Of course I told him they eat tree bark and aquatic vegetation, and even grass. I almost always get a positive reaction when I mention I trap. In Maryland.
@SeldomFales not strange at all. We like what we like

I was against trapping till I saw what the beavers did to the beautiful trees around my pond. Now I am trying to be a trapper. I have a lot to learn.
TC it's not as bad as it's made out to be. We're glad to have you here. If there's anything I can do to help you please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for watching
Well said Dale, as always thanks for all you do!
Thank you Mitch. I appreciate you watching too
Great topic Dale, I agree that we have to clean up our act to protect the right of trapping. Thanks for sharing this.
That's a fact Ron. Thank you for watching. I appreciate you

You're absolutely right Mike. You're only as good as your equipment. And an education to improve your skills is money and time well spent.
Thank you for sharing Dale!

Mr . you could use some discretion in your opening comment about name calling , to anyone offended by trapping!

Tim you're absolutely right. This thing is going to die at our own hands if we don't change things around. I appreciate you watching Tim. Thank you
Thank You Dale!!!
Thank you Dave. I appreciate you watching buddy
