It seems like everyone on the internet keeps talking about same places, while some other potentially amazing options are kept in the dark.
Today we are talking about such a place - Bosnia and Hercegovina.
This is not often discussed country, and you don’t see many foreigners and digital nomads going there. At least not yet.
Bosnia is one of the most unusual countries in the region.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: BiH shall consist of two Entities: the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federacija Bosna i Hercegovina - hereinafter FBiH) and the Brcko District.
It is a very beautiful and peaceful country, with very kind and hospitable people.
Also, taxes are not bad at all!
Income tax is applied on a flat tax rate of 10% on income from both employment, interest, royalties, and capital gains. Social Security apply to most employment income. The employee pay 33% of gross salary, while the employer contribute 10.5% in addition. The Value-added tax VAT in Bosnia is 17% as standard rate, which is quite lower than in most of Europe.

I was just doing a bit of research on Bosnia yesterday, wow. I am really appreciative of your emphasis on these countries where personal autonomy and freedoms are still enjoyed. Bosnia looks very beautiful from what I’ve seen. Have heard Sarajevo is quite lovely, especially during the Christmas season.

Yup, it’s true. Everything is more free. Even with COVID-19. I went back this year due to a relative’s bereavement and everyone is so free, not caring, events still going on as usual. People living their lives…
Bosnia is good for a rural life. If you want to homestead or live off the grid. Fresh produce is being sold everywhere you drive on streets. If you can snag a remote job or have enough savings its quite comfortable to live there. Big swaths of land and forests can be purchased for low prices. You wont get such cheap prices + being very so close to the European heartland anywhere else.
I dont recommend it to city folks, while there are mid sized cities, the comforts are lacking for a city loving person, as for example ordering stuff online can be a big pain in the a$$.
Haha yeah. If you’re into a fast-paced easy city life, it’s the worst. Sadly, that was me and didn’t enjoy Bosnia as an ethnic Bosnian coming from Canada. It’s perfect for retiring people or younger people who are into quiet, agricultural life where you can literally hand raise chickens and have them follow you around. Or pet some cows. And eat fresh, organic whole milk/cheese, organic produce, buy cheap things at the weekly flea markets and have cheap food at the restaurants. Even cheap alcohol compared to Canadian/American prices.
It was way healthier diet-wise to eat there. I was skinny like a stick. My hormones were more balanced and barely had any acne or weight issues. Coming back to Canada makes me bloat and gain water weight from the salt intake and hormonal imbalance thanks to them using growth hormones in our animals…

Only Sarajevo is good when we talk about someone who likes city life. It's not the biggest city, but it's enough big to have options to do something and to feel that city vibe.

Bosnia was the first country in Europe to ban mandatory vaccinations and banned vaxx id's and passports since it went against our constitution and was won in our courts.

I am from Bosnia, and you were in my part of country, with this waterfalls 😉 If someone needs more information you can contact me. Guns, hmm🤔 Lot of people don't have it, even if do... they don't have it on public places, because it's simple not allowed to have it, unless you are policeman or security company. Same situation is in Croatia and Serbia, Montenegro. And vaccination, yes that can be beneficial for some people, at the moment they don't need to have that, so no restrictions at all, heaven on earth. People are very kind, food is cheaper then EU. For tourism is interesting, many undiscovered places. If you have independent income it can be interesting country.
Please make another video about Bosnia- company formation and banking facility. Also looking information how to get resident with company formation option.

Freedom is an issue for "certain people"?
No. In the end freedom is an issue for _everyone_ whether they "get it" or not.
It is just that some are quicker on the uptake than others. The slow learners at the back of the class may not understand, but it is an issue for them too.

what are the basic requirements for a long term residence permit (for shengen citizens)? what options are available? or you can just proof you have enough money to mantain yourself and get a permit?
Oh geeze, I am convinced that it should be forbidden for North Americans to make videos on countries and regions they know nothing about, their history and their present. This is coming from someone who has worked in Bosnia for several years and knows the local language and was part of the community. BiH can be a wonderful place to live in another world, there are many kind, young Bosnians with perspective, but there is a reason why successful Bosnians, with local businesses, are leaving the country en masse and even the future of the country is at stake. Not to mention that the scars from the war are still deep, just as the bullet holes ever-present on many of Sarajevo's buildings and the current geopolitical turmoil will certainly have an impact. Interesting tidbit: the biggest investors in the country are from the Middle East, besides emigres, of course. I will close it at that and will also mention that due diligence and risk analysis are definitely not overrated!

Sounds interesting. I want to know more about Bosnia. Is it hard to get by without speaking the language? And how do you get residency?
You can get by on English temporarily because we all learn English in school since elementary school I believe. It might not be perfect, though. And mind you some people aren’t understanding (even towards me, who is ethnic Bosnian smh). You’ll definitely have to learn the language to reduce the need of a translator and be able to work there unless it’s an international job or something that’d use English.

It’s definitely Russia who’s inspiring these alt right Serbs. Russia wants to ruin all of Europe and tear everyone down. Using their oh so special friends in Serbia who already hate people just because they’re Muslim or Catholic, to inspire a new war to help do this for them. Pathetic really.
I have seen, that there is no minimum stay and no taxes on dividends - you must only rent some place in the right province.

In BiH noone will ask you if you are vaxed or not, only in the hospital ofc, but on the other hand, almost sll of the children are vaxed, if not, they are going to havr some limitations.
Second, Bosnia is not a country with this horrible infrastructure, our capital has one of the best public transport systems in the Balkans with trains, trams, trolleys, cable cars and mini buses and buses all around.
Thrid. About the guns, if you want to own it, you have to go through a not so easy process. No one will have it outside, only the police. I have only seen my father's "bird gun" when he goes hunting, and some drunk people that shoot the sky at the wedding(our tradition) other than that, never.
Food is mainly traditional, but almost every restourant has italian food since we also eat it a lot, and ofc burgers, pizzas, tortillas all around.
I drove from Split across to Sarajevo in 2019 and have invested in a company that's building a mine an hour outside Sarajevo. Some of the roads were horrendous, luckily it was a rental car. Nice people with some unfortunate and dark history. They love shisha and coffee. Mostar is nice. There seems to be political issues bubbling again. Good video, thanks

You still need license for guns in Bosnia which is a hard to get if you had any smallest problem with law.

I enjoy your videos and tax optimization topic overall, but if we are to consider options like Bosnia and Hercegovina seriously then the risks of a new Russia-inspired war in Balkans should be carefully considered or at least mentioned. We are approaching an era of geopolitical turbulence with Russia attacking Ukraine, China (likely) attacking Taiwan and USA power declining. It is very important to consider geopolitics whenever you plan to move around for tax optimization or for any other reason.
I think we’re done with wars. Younger generations are way less interested in nationalism, and lots of them realized that war brought only misery to us.
Nowadays we’re meeting in developed countries around the world, and it doesn’t matter who is who. Seems ridiculous to us that the previous generation had a bloody civil war.
Lots of politics in EX YU is leaning towards the west, except for maybe Serbia.
The only possibility of conflict might be Kosovo, but my friends from that area have zero interest in wars. They’d mostly leave the country and move abroad.
Tensions may occur, but there’s not many young people willing to fight for anything in this area anymore. Simply not worth it for us.
@@tw9419 you may not be interested in war, but the war is interested in you. We, Ukrainians, didn't want and don't want war with Russia or Russia proxies. They don't care what we want. War started in 2014 and it may escalate soon given Russia amassing troops and issuing weird ultimatums to NATO.
Russia is very interested in destabilizing Europe. Chaos is a ladder as Littlefinger said. We should be ready.

@@OffshoreCitizen Absolutely :) I love the people, loads of my friends growing up in Australia (late 80s early 90s) were from or born to parents fleeing Yugoslavia. Also, at various times in my life I've lived in rainforest hippie communes with no flushing toilets..... good times.... infrastructure is overrated. So if Bosnia is offering freedom with a healthy suspicion of Government, I'm SOLD!

Just an FYI, that shadow over your eyes gives you a somewhat nefarious look. Easily fixable with a well positioned light and it does not even have to be very bright in my experience.

Really Michael? This part of the Balkans is just too risky. Have to disagree with you on this one. Even WW1 was started in Savajero with extremist racial tensions boiling over leading to the assassination of Ferdinand in 1914.
The scars run deep from the tragic civil war. The legacy of ethnic cleansing within a European State and with so many of the surviving victims living next to the perpetrators of those crimes against humanity - the risks of future conflict loom?
Sorry but you've lost me on this one.
Bosnians were mere victims of long dragged conflicts between Serbs and Croats. They were just the collateral damage. Never inflicted anything. Some young people bought into propaganda from these 2 countries and what happened happened.
Very different people live there nowadays.
@@tw9419 Sure, it's a beautiful country and a great coast to sail. I wouldn't advise investing in Lebanon or Syria or Kabul or Myanmar either.
So as a businessman I would be very very cautious before investing time and money into Bosnia unless I had absolutely trustworthy advice and partnership on the ground. Things can re-ignite too easily and too quickly. And as for retiring in Bosnia.....?
It wasn't a civil war, it was a brutal war of aggression by Serbia and Croatia who wanted to divide the country among themselves through ethnic cleansing. Thankfully, they largely failed but not before committing war crimes that are irreparable.

Malaysia from October till June, depends on passport holding, 3 months quick run to Thailand or Indonesia, depending of location in Malaysia. BUT until all this bs measures abolished better to stay in one place.
Mainly a good review, but the "gun freedom" u've talked about and that most of the population caries ak47's is Absolutely not true. I've never saw an ak47 in my life :) - besides that, a great video.
This type of things you read in foreign media about Balkans :D Lived in this are for years, never seen a gun in my entire life. Generally, the idea of the violence in this area is very outdated. Most people just want to live normal lives.

What occurred in Bosnia wasn’t a civil war, it was ethnic cleansing and genocide (the worst genocide in Europe since WWII) by the minority Serbian “Orthodox” nationalists against the unarmed and innocent Bosniak Muslim civilians with the help of neighbouring Serbia. This was exacerbated by the United Nations decisions to (1) place an international arms embargo on Bosnia in “an effort to prevent escalating violence” but which in reality left Bosniaks defenceless against the Serbian nationalist crusaders who had significant supplies of heavy weapons from the Yugoslav National Army and (2) declared UN “safe havens” in exchange for the small supply of light weapons Bosniaks had to defend themselves with, which led to the worst genocide in Europe since WWII.

Is this the most underrated country in Europe: Landmines, AK 47s, no one is vaccinated, the roads are treacherous and you're going to have to eat a lot of burak(?). I'm leaning towards "no".
That’s called Freedumb … lots of right leaning Americans eat it up, I’m sure the burak will go down nicely.
I have been an ardent follower of your channel. while most videos are very cool ones, quite a few ones are not very convincing e.g. Your recommend Bosnia & Mexico are definitely not cool choices, with metros of latter being notorious for city crimes e.g. kidnapping of white collar expat professionals, etc. Instead Albania, Chile, (or Brazil or Colombia, even though metros of both these countries have petty crimes which are less severe in nature than those of Mexico or Honduras) might be better choices.
Also, other countries that were recommended earlier like Turkey, & Pakistan- both just got recently blacklisted for terror funding & money laundering! Needless to say about accelerated devaluation of Turkish currency Lira which has already tanked rock bottom!!!
Did I recommend Bosnia? There's no one size fits all. I don't tell people any particular country is good, rather try to explore what people might like or might not.
When did I recommend Pakistan? Or Honduras?
As for Turkey the devaluing Lira is part of what makes it attractive. I've never suggested holding the Lira or using their banks. Pick and choose what's good about places. Turkey is a beautiful, diverse country with tons to do and great value for the money.
As for money laundering, it's a boogey man, wouldn't pay attention to the cartel reporting in this regard.
