    5:33 No no. You have it backwards, that IS a sickle, it would have had a 10"-12" handle permanently attached and used by one hand. A scythe blade is much more open and longer, fit onto about a 5 or 6 foot long staff and would be swung side to side with both hands controlling it.

    New subscriber here. How far out do you guys go when netal detecting? I am 95 miles from Fennimore. Living on a century owned farm with basement dating to the 1860's. And a half a mike ftom an 1834 homestead as well. Both places had fires during their lifetime. If your not interested do you know of someone in the Freeport Illinois area I could contact?

    • @SWWisconsinMetalDetecting
      @SWWisconsinMetalDetecting  2 роки тому +2

      Stephen That is so kind to offer to have me detect your homestead. That is a little far for a day trip. I am sure you have metal detectorists in your area that would love to detect there. If you want to keep what they find just let them know that before they come out to detect. Good luck.

    Couple nice marbles. Several nice coins. The custodian of some building or complex lost his key ring. Way too many keys for that little place. The tool you found by the stump is a sickle. A scythe is the big one. Thanks.

    Being a rural store could the keys be for individual outdoor lockers for items delivered to a central location for more remote farmers and such? Maybe not for the post office but for delivery trucks that wouldn't be familiar with the area,like Sears or J C Penny and the like. I think official post office keys are stamped as such. 100 years ago maybe customers would pay a fee,get a key,then make the trip occasionally to see if their stuff arrived. The key cutting is probably a much better idea,but then why would they have so many differently cut keys? Wouldn't a cut key go with the customer? And why all Yale? It's easy to imagine a small store owner wouldn't have room in the retail building for all the inventory and might have another building but to have so many different keys he would have had to replace lots of locks. Of course during the depression years there could easily have been lots of broken locks and old keys got collected in a box. Half the fun of watching MD vids is guessing possibilities,at least it is for me. My old brain will get stuck on a subject and just keep going. Yyyyaaaagh! Let me out of here!! LOL. JK. Good video man. Liked.

    One of the residents must have been a custodian or property manager, and when they retired they just threw that whole key ring out the back door.

    Dimes and pennies were not the insignificant sum that they are today.I believe that you could buy a steak dinner for about 5 cents around the turn of the century(1900).Even a penny had some buying power in those days.
