Let's be fair too, we're saying this now that we're stuck in a bottomless pit of shitty zombies year after year. But at the time of BO4 everyone hated these maps and the chaos storyline with all their might, and all the community asked for was for 3arc to forget about it and go back to telling the main story. Unfortunately they had already spent all the money on chaos and our beloved primis story was such a disappointment.
To be honest in the end I guess we got what a majority of the community deserved. During this time everyone was hating on chaos and not wanting to give it a chance because everyone wanted more aether. The same thing happened with the victus crew everyone was so damn obsessed with the original characters that they wouldn't let new stories or characters share the spotlight.
@P3Drororo to be frank, Primis story was mid at best. It wasn't till BO4 that it became shit and character assinated everyone and made Nikolai the most despised Character.
@knowtheplan472 chaos was good when we got towards the Ancient Evil. Voyage wasn't a great intro to them and Dead of the Night was a full of treat for zombie fans. IX was pretty metal. Unfortunately Activision ripped funding due to the fan backlash and Blundell leaving soon afterwards. Even though this new Dark Aether timeline makes Chaos the Origins of the Zombie outbreak, it's still not the same story and only adds more confusion
I know right? And it's all sledgehammer fault. If they could make a game on time like the other studios treyarch would have never been pulled off of black ops 4
@@DizzyReaper We see Sledgehammer being better at coming up with good maps and whatnot in modern times. The issue is Activision kneecapping them time and time again for the yearly releases.
@@DizzyReaper devs have gone on record stating that a huge contributing factor to BO4's zombies development took it's turn because of community reception, never forget that. Ancient Evil was barely played at launch, and only appreciated after the other maps came out. Players were literally begging Treyarch to kill the Chaos storyline & focus only on Ether. The re-writing of history where the community is magically absolved of blame is really ignorant and sad to see, because they're doing it again right now for BO6.
The issue had nothing to do with chaos it was just a bunch of marks that couldn't get over a new group. The problem that zombies had itself were the constant crashes when you try to play the damn maps
@Siqka-w9q it sucks to think that if the community weren't being punks about Chaos then Zombies would still have that aura that everybody complains the newer games don't have. BO4 came out at a time in my life when I unfortunately did not have time for video games. Looking back at the Chaos storyline…it was incredible. I genuinely feel bad for the devs who poured all their passion and creativity into it just to be rejected by a huge chunk of the fanbase and mangled by Activision. They gave us their best and deserved a better response. For all its flaws, Chaos was an authentic effort at pushing Zombies forward, which is an unenviable task between pressures from the community and the publisher.
To me, the real reason black ops 4 zombies failed is the black ops pass. This is the most gatekept method to introduce new players to zombies, which wasn’t many. Black ops Cold War may be divisive now, but it got plenty of new fans on board with free dlc that helped a lot. Black ops 4 as a whole was such a mess with no campaign or identity that no amount of content or gorgeous looking maps even under aether could save this sinking ship of a game. It’s a shame too because I think Ancient Evil is a masterpiece, but in the end, it was mostly Acitivisions fault
The Problem isnt the Black Ops Pass, Nobody really complained about it as bad as they did about Chaos and The Black Ops 4 engine. The Idea of they presented with the Black ops Pass was a good way to gain hype and excitement. 3 Years of content and DLC, thats something any fan would be excited about. the Problem is, Them choosing to abandon Campaign 8 months before launch and focusing on building a brand new engine to fit a battle royal into a game that was alreadying having production issues. Plus Jason Blundell being hell bent on Launching BO4 with 3 Zombie Maps rahter than sticking with his original plan for Chaos to be exculsively Year 1, with Aether being Year 2, Zombie Chronicles 2 for Year 4 and Classifed always serving as a Bonus map. The constant changes is what killed BO4 in the end.
@justmauldie at least you got something fun out of it. I Think outta all the New zombies games, CW is by far the best one compared to Vanguard and MWZ. My issue with CW is just how meh the experience is and how much the aiming in that game hurts my head. But atleast it doesn't have a mountain of issue like MWZ or the lack of creativity like Vanguard
I blame 3arc for stopping the production of a story that we have been following for 15 years, to focus on a new story, with a character with no charisma at all exactly when the story was at its peak after BO3 and BOTD. Starting this chaos story at this time was simply a stupid idea.
@@P3Drororo Whilst I agree it was a very wrong time to introduce a brand new storyline. I really wish they return to it as I think Chaos is a lot better than the current Dark Aether story we have.

I'm so glad the community is turning around and looking at how awesome BO4 truly was. I really wish we were able to get more. It was my favorite Call of Duty, and I started on the original MW3!
Bought BO4 again and all the DLCs for the first time cause of this retrospective series. Been waiting to play Ancient Evil till this dropped lets get it

@jasonblundelldobebussing I know... hahah I went back and forth on it. I want these videos to be a time capsule in a way so I thought it may cheapen the experience. But it was part of that era... I'll take the L.
I’m the farthest person from a BO4 fan, but it would be poor of me to not point out maps like Ancient Evil or IX to be 10/10 experiences. Ancient Evil is the map that I go back to whenever the extreme rare feeling of going back to BO4 hits me and it is an insanely beautiful and its gameplay flow is really good. Unfortunately both the community and Treyarch themselves took until DLC 2 to really give us this great offering. However it was too little too late and the community now hates that this is what zombies used to be, rather than what zombies is now, but it was what they were complaining about back in 2018 with Treyarch’s gameplay choices and story changes. Now we’re still having those complaints 6 years later but almost the opposite side of the coin. It’s impossible to please everyone especially in our niche toxic community, but at the end of the day maps like these do stand the tests of time.
Honestly the biggest hit to me other than them canceling this storyline is that now in BO6 they seem to be teasing certain aspects of the storyline. I want them to find a way to properly bring it back, but I don't think it would ever make sense.
Great Video as always nice to you see get down to all the main points or summarize the most of the behind the scene. Will state one correction, tho in terms Allisters Death. I guess you can say he was technically dead in the ending Cutscene. But if we were to take The New Dark Aether recons and Story. Allister didn't die on ancient evil and was actually turned back to normal eventually and helped our Heros destroy the Medusa. However he later was killed by the Nazis on Vanguard as stated in the audio logs.
for me,playing it rarely at The Giant, but with BO4 it became quite an easy way to get into black ops, start easy and see parts to collect,if ya got it,go to normal. it was really cool.and this new storyline was very cool, especially this new look,so bright in the arena, the titanic so detailed and the greek delphi....im so sad that the story ended there,i hoped for more of them, more maps and especially more story,it was really interesting.also ya should mention, earlier to get the full story ya need to know all black ops as i got it but there it was all in black ops 4 ,which also was a nice way for newer player and get a hang of the story.and it started the real addiction for me in zombies. :3
Just binged all the videos in this series, top notch stuff. Was wondering since BO4 is/was so controversial, would Black Ops 2 Zombies retrospectives be on the horizon? I feel that game also has a very similar mixed reception, in terms of some really rough maps, and some truly great ones.
I will probably get through all the games at some point. Working on bo6 and cold war stuff for the time being. And then I'll will see where the wind blows after that.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes! You couldn’t choose a better day to upload this! Why? Because it’s my birthday and ancient evil is my favorite map. Like holy shit this is awesome 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Once the dark aether story ends, the next thing I would love to see is the chaos story. I know activision would never allow it with the reception of bo4 but something tells me the devs don’t just want to let that incredible story go.
you know sometimes it makes me wonder if treyarch had gone specifically aether or specifically chaos with this game. Imagine if they had only continued the Aether story. A great war map, killing Monty, still destroying the aether. I imagine Alpha Omega would have still existed and Tag Der Toten may have still existed, but maybe an extra map or two, like a great war map, and maybe some other map that ties some more stuff together. The game's mechanics would have been centered around Aether, and it would have felt different. THEN imagine the next black ops game would take a new turn where a brand new story comes, being the chaos story, where it gets the whole budget of a game, and it got to be finished
tho I love Dead of the night slightly more, I can 100% say that Ancient Evil perfected the EE balance(not hard but super fun to do), from how to obtain the god hands to the main quest. it's sad that we won't see this type of experimentation in zombies for a long time after how bo4 was received and we'll probably gonna stick for more safe experiences for a while until Activision starts believing in the mode again. Kevin Drew (Design Director) on Ancient Evil : "Rather than chasing something I thought players wanted, I instead created a map that I'd want to play - one of the biggest takeaways of my career. Love this map, love Greek lore, and absolutely love partner Pegasus."
Really great video! I wasn't a big fan of this map when it came out, and honestly, I'm still not, but I will admit that it was always a really pretty map, and like you said it was oozing with personality from head to toe. I really respected what they did with the setbacks they were encountering. Chaos was an interesting idea, and I think I would've been more receptive to it at the time had it been Treyarch's main focus. It felt awful buying the season pass only to get a storyline that was only half done combined with a different storyline that was rushed to the finish. That ending really hit hard though lol I actually really like Cold War from a pure gameplay standpoint, but it's obvious looking back that it was the start of a direction shift for the franchise that wound up giving us really bland dialogue from static PNGs talking on our radio while we played as faceless soldiers in pretty but not so interesting setpieces. It sucks, I really feel like they can still bring in casuals while telling these creative narratives, but it just doesn't seem like the team wants to do that anymore.
Sadly chaos was doomed from the start the moment they decided to put two stories into one game. They really should have saved chaos for Cold war and or let revelations be the ending.
@@cristhianmontoya6648Yes, it's our fault that they changed all the mechanics that made the soul of the mode and changed them to tell a boring story with characters without charisma just when the story of Ether was at its peak after BO3 and BOTD. It's never the fault of poor Activision/3arc, the community is the villain. It's not our fault if everything they do after BO3 is shit.
ancient evil was the first map in bo4 that really got me interested in the story and kinda over the primis/ultimis story it was just getting good and the devs were like naw so sorry
I'm a geek mythology sucker so ancient evil was a zombies god send for me. But I genuinely will die on the hill, that the chaos maps aged like fine wine. Just like shadows how it was hated when it first came out.
I blame Activision as well because they released the game way too early it was beyond ridiculous how broken the game was and the fact they had chaos and aether at the same time was a recipe for disaster I really wish they would have done what they said they were going to do chaos first and then year two would be aether but like you said I blamed the UA-camrs for that and Activision as well
Treyarch did so consistently amazing with the art design in these games that when it was taken away it ruined any chance the mode had at feeling special.

Really good video, said a lot of the stuff I've been thinkin while replaying BO4. It's a shame we'll probably never get maps as crazy as the Chaos story ones again.
Glad to see you making this kind of video.
Always creating such well crafted videos, thank you for such amazing videos!
Been replaying bo4 and I bought the dlc based on your vids, I love dead of the night and ancient evil so I’ve been really looking forward to this one
This is such good zombies content it's can't even begin to describe how high quality it is
Thank you. I really try to make the production experience good for you guys. 😀
I'm so glad the community is turning around and looking at how awesome BO4 truly was. I really wish we were able to get more. It was my favorite Call of Duty, and I started on the original MW3!
stop teasing me with what could have been
@@murco_ never 😈
God damn these videos are so good.
Bought BO4 again and all the DLCs for the first time cause of this retrospective series. Been waiting to play Ancient Evil till this dropped lets get it
It’s weird to see but for some reason this channel does do better in the algorithm, I have to search for your main channel but this one is recommended the second you upload😂
Ancient Evil is definitely my favorite map from bo4
27:07 Nixaru be like: and that's when I took it personally
I remember that event
@@Joshua-xf2os, you're the OG.
I thought ab putting an Easter egg in the video when all the stuff was flashing during the kiss putting Krazy rabbit and nixaru in it as well.
@@AfterlifeAnalysis, bro, hilarious 😂 talk about the missed opportunity
@jasonblundelldobebussing I know... hahah I went back and forth on it. I want these videos to be a time capsule in a way so I thought it may cheapen the experience. But it was part of that era... I'll take the L.
My second favorite map behind blood of the dead. Yes. You heard me. Blood is my favorite bo4 map.
I think it is mine as well 🙃
Blood ain't half bad!
I can understand. It's Mob of the Dead but bigger and more cinematic and I like the Magmagat.
I only wish the Easter egg was as fun as Mob's.
I feel you man, blood is the best bo4 map, sooo underrated. Probably i would put it in my top 5.
Botd is by no means a bad map, it's just that it had huge shoes to fill and it couldn't live up to what motd was
Thx for making this video. It needs to be said.
Amazing video, it’s sad what happened to black ops 3 & 4
This made me re try it thank you
I’m the farthest person from a BO4 fan, but it would be poor of me to not point out maps like Ancient Evil or IX to be 10/10 experiences.
It’s impossible to please everyone especially in our niche toxic community, but at the end of the day maps like these do stand the tests of time.
let’s goo been waiting for this video🔥🔥
Exactly why Ancient Evil is my 2nd favorite zombies map of all time. Absolute masterpiece.
Honestly the biggest hit to me other than them canceling this storyline is that now in BO6 they seem to be teasing certain aspects of the storyline. I want them to find a way to properly bring it back, but I don't think it would ever make sense.
Great video i still think milo is the main reason there is so much hate towards zombies.
Finally my life can be complete
Rip chaos story
Ancient Evil is my favourite map of all time! I’m still upset that the chaos story was cancelled.
They really dropped the ball on Dead of the night and Ancient Evil having absolutely no marketing, these were the best chaos maps
masterpiece of a video about a masterpiece of a map
Fun fact Bruno VA does the new announcer lines and was Percy in AE
Ancient Evil top 3 maps ever created. Its one of my favorites.
Yes yes yes yes yes yes! You couldn’t choose a better day to upload this! Why? Because it’s my birthday and ancient evil is my favorite map. Like holy shit this is awesome 💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Hell ya! Happy birthday!
@@AfterlifeAnalysis thanks man!
Once the dark aether story ends, the next thing I would love to see is the chaos story. I know activision would never allow it with the reception of bo4 but something tells me the devs don’t just want to let that incredible story go.
I want the Chaos story back so bad. Super underrated
There is good news!!
OMG about damn time, about damn time.
We kept saying that we were sick of chaos, but then we got this map and people were interested again
you know sometimes it makes me wonder if treyarch had gone specifically aether or specifically chaos with this game.
MY GOAT DROPPED THE ANCIENT EVIL REVIEW MY DAY IS MADE
BO6 NEEDS a chaos map with art design/aura like this
January 15th is my birthday and that comment at 01:07 freaked me
If they ever brought back the chaos storyline i will accept it with more than just open arms man
tho I love Dead of the night slightly more, I can 100% say that Ancient Evil perfected the EE balance(not hard but super fun to do), from how to obtain the god hands to the main quest. it's sad that we won't see this type of experimentation in zombies for a long time after how bo4 was received and we'll probably gonna stick for more safe experiences for a while until Activision starts believing in the mode again.
Kevin Drew (Design Director) on Ancient Evil :
"Rather than chasing something I thought players wanted, I instead created a map that I'd want to play - one of the biggest takeaways of my career. Love this map, love Greek lore, and absolutely love partner Pegasus."
Im really hoping on hope Blundell makes one last return sometime in the future.
Hopefully they came make it up now. Since we have the ending of terminis
Ancient Evil is Pure Love❤
Greetings from Germany
Dark aether is overrated purple atmosphere isn’t zombies like what they’ve done before cw
Me when the dark aether is dark ...😮🤯
And now chaos got teased in bo6 so hype
fun fact kevin drew was the lead devloper on this map.
Sadly chaos was doomed from the start the moment they decided to put two stories into one game. They really should have saved chaos for Cold war and or let revelations be the ending.
THE WAIT IS OVER!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your patience!
The worst part is we will never see the end to this b/c of the communities inability to accept change it also happened with the tranzit crew
Well the Black ops 6 Terminus Easter egg ending would like to have a word with you
Chaos was a string of A and S tier maps with an S tier story and I'm forever disappointed that we won't ever get a conclusion
About that...
4:33 "So did the player's Vitriol(ic) begin to Wither(ing)"
I can’t believe you actually figured that out.
Gg my friend.
If only we got the Library of Alexandria Map after this Masterpiece 😭
ahh so it was the community that ruined zombies and made activison take that turn and not activision just randomly doing that for no reason
@@P3Drororo You should put the blame on Activision, they're the ones who give them a deadline, budget, etc...
Finally, the best one (:
So many people have mixed/poor thoughts on BO4 Zombies or better yet just BO4 as a whole, however, BO4 is in my top 3 Favourite COD games since COD4
goated zombies youtuber
Destorying things we love is our nature
ancient evil was the first map in bo4 that really got me interested in the story and kinda over the primis/ultimis story it was just getting good and the devs were like naw so sorry
26:03 a game for everyone is a game for no one
Finally a new vid
I remember watching codenamepizza trying to solve this live!
YEEEES THE VIDEO CAME OUT
I'm a geek mythology sucker so ancient evil was a zombies god send for me. But I genuinely will die on the hill, that the chaos maps aged like fine wine. Just like shadows how it was hated when it first came out.
I hate the zombies community and youtubers, yall ruined this amazing storyline and the chance to play on a "great war" map 😞
I blame Activision as well because they released the game way too early it was beyond ridiculous how broken the game was and the fact they had chaos and aether at the same time was a recipe for disaster I really wish they would have done what they said they were going to do chaos first and then year two would be aether but like you said I blamed the UA-camrs for that and Activision as well
Oh and Mr Lex as well he was the biggest hater for Black ops 4
> It has zero side EE’s.
Good boss fight tho
@@isaacfaith9369 it certainly doesn't have side ee's
I hated 9 when it came out now Id give anything to have it come out in black ops six
Treyarch did so consistently amazing with the art design in these games that when it was taken away it ruined any chance the mode had at feeling special.
