  • Episode forty nine of Unsung Heroes, a series on HSG featuring some of the obscure cars from both the concept and mass production world which simply do not get the recognition which they deserve...
In this episode we take a look at one of the craziest Group S prototypes, and one which may not have had its moment in the sun, but lived on through other cars...

The Martini livery looks so good in red. Don't quite like it as much as in white, but this is gorgeous as well.

To me the ECV2 is definitely a looker, it looked like Lancia and NASA were gonna rally on the Moon! Better aero and a shorter body meant that it would be faster in the corners, the best of Group S IMO

Imho the ECV had nothing more than the generic shape of the Delta. The only part of the car that was originally an S4 is the chassis, which was itself heavily modified. Everything else was custom engineered and built.
Speaking of the chassis, it was carried over to the ECV2 and therefore there is no more a real ECV1. What you have in you pictures is a creation ov Volta based on a Delta S4 EVO chassis and the discarded body parts that weren't transferred over to the ECV2
On this line I would say that you should really make a piece on that car. I just subscribed to your channel in the hopes of seeing it.

I remember this car being used as the final boss of the game _Gravel_ on Steam.

Not 100% sure the Triflux engine and turbo technology influenced Ferrari’s F40 development as Nicola Materazzi was a well respected expert in turbo technology from the early ‘80s himself (also involved in F1 engine research); ultimately the F40 went with IHI turbines, which were carefully selected by Materazzi himself for their low spool up latency and good pressure layout (KKKs were considered then discarded). Also, as far as I understand, Triflux was meant to help manufacturer replace more complex V engines with smaller and simpler 4-5 cylinder engines; Materazzi ultimately chose a very ordinate and “traditional” longitudinal V8 with 1 turbo and 1 intercooler for each bank for the F40, which proved extremely effective nonetheless.

The theory about the influence on the f40 sounds nice, but the f40 was developed before the ecv and came out a year before the ecv. Ferrari already had experience with carbon bodywork in F1. The same people developing the lancias and running the team went on to run the Alfa DTM team. They were also involved in the development of the Alfa group C car.

I just discovered this series. Fantastic. If you do an episode on the first mosler and the delta wing that would be fantastic.

It is more than that, Chris Harris before Topgear met it at a tyre convention in Italy, the ECV1 was running a conservative 800bhp at this event.

how crazy you had to be to jump into a experimental rally machine that you had to think ahead to control it, the reason why group b and s should have continued the drivers died but they werent forced they just had to be the best

Having owned a 16V Delta Integrale mysel and knowing how good that car was to drive, i can only imagine what the experience must have been to drive this beast. Thanks for the informative video!

Yeah group b has some amazing cars. My favorites being the 037 stradale and Audi s1 , but of course the death of Henri toivonen ended that
