  • Noise cancellation on the Motorola R7 is one of the biggest advantages of this new radio in the MotoTRBO lineup. It now features a second microphone on the back of the radio to help suppress background noise and radio feedback. How does it compare to the Motorola 7550e and the popular AnyTone 878? I put it to the test using my gas lawnmower as a noise source -- these are the results!

Great video comparison. I own a 7550 And love the radio But the R7 is clearly the better choice in a noisy environment.

Could you please do another video showing how FM, other HAM digital standards (e.g. YSF and D-star) or even public safety standards (e.g. TETRA and P25) will sound like under the same loudness coming from the same running engine? Here in Hong Kong, HAM usually don't like DMR for no reasons; they just don't like it, even if they know the distinctive features that DMR offers. By having a video show how DMR wins when confronting noisy condition, I hope they will clear their misconception about DMR.

I wouldn’t say there’s no reason to dislike DMR, mainly it sounds like garbage and you have to “learn” how to comprehend the speech coming over DMR. Analog sounds so much better.

@@josephhacker6508 This is all about perspective; When I say DMR outperforms FM I'm talking about the reception at the fringe area, the overall noise suppression DMR provides, and the useful data features. But those stubborn old HAMs start yelling and say "FM is the most natural and even any other HAM digital modes are way better than DMR". And I defend myself and say "How about at the fringe area?" They: ...........
The fact is that I've heard of YSF and D-star, they sound pretty much the same as DMR. What those stubborn HAMs are trying to do is they constantly value the modes they like by devaluing the modes they don't like.

@@galax574 Considering all digital modes right now use the AMBE vocoders, saying that one sounds better would be weird.

So true about the Motorola. They make great products. As long as the user understands the limitation of each radio, I think it's good to go.

Interesting comparison. However, (and please correct me if I am wrong) if my understanding is correct the only ham radio here is the AnyTone as it is dual band and DMR enabled. The Motorola is not a ham radio and is primarily DMR for use in commercial environments and company networks within an organisation or building/facility. Also it only has either a UHF or VHF option, meaning you have to choose one over the other. However, despite this the Motorola has far superior build quality and I do wish that ham kit was as well made as commercial gear.

Good video! Would love to see a shootout between the Moto R7 and the Kenwood NX-5300.

Many DMR systems, Brandmeister included, send an over the air ID in addition to the DMR UID, so you don't have to load a csv with a bunch of user info to the radio, like on the anytone. The Kenwood NX series support this. Does this Motorola?

Yes. Talker Alias was added to ETSI DMR standards in 2016 and the R7 will display it. However, it’s dependent on the other user and repeater/hotspot having it enabled.

What a great video. The Motorola is clearly superior in several ways...the question is....is it worth the premium price?

If you’re someone who could benefit from the improvements, surely. The AnyTone is great for what it is, I use AnyTone in the car and at home, but it can’t be confused with the engineering in the Motorola gear.

When I first got into trbo it was before most hams even knew what it was and used Motorola gear was cheap. Once hams started to get into trbo the price of used Motorola gear doubled.

I would say it is. A little pricy but great audio and physical quality that makes a big difference in the long run.

Did the 7550e have Enhanced Noise Cancellation active?

The Motorolas are Superior to the Anytone. But I don't think it's worth the price. I have 2 of those radios and use them for hunting and they work excellent. Your tests are not going to be the norm.in most cases. Depends on where your using the radios In my opinion

I find it astonishing how Motorola has no regard for UI/UX whatsoever. That channel name scrolling nervously back and forth on a high-res LCD just kills me. 🤣
    Don't get me started on their RSS/CPS usability… 🤭
