Part of my beautiful memories in London was riding on these single-doored trains. The classic front, its PA system, the seats, the door, the sound...All these were deeply imprinted in my memories. Goodbye D-stock. Glad to have ever ridden on one :-(
D Stock trains looked and sounded their best prior to their refurbishment, especially during the 80's when they sounded very much like the 1983 Tube Stock.
I rember designing a website in the early 2000's with the original D-Stock Moquette colour scheme many years ago. The I.T. teacher was confused at my unusual choice of graphic design, and when asked where I got my inspiration, 'tube train seating upholstery' seemed to bewilder him. I was sooooo nerdy back then, and I was only 11.
The first ever tube train I rode on my first visit to London was DStock train from Victoria to Richmond. The sound of it's rumble will always be imprinted in my memory.
It was one of my first memories of the sub-surface tube when I first came to London in 2014. Never will I forget being stuck in an AC-less D Stock when it was 31C outside. Great times.
My first Tube train I went on was a C stock back in 2013, going from Paddington to King Cross, I remember the roar and there being beggers on the train!
Or, is that Double Down Anton, complete with bacon...... A man on a mission burning up the mean streets of Bradford in his Volvo searching for a KFC. I may have watched one or two (or three, or four, or five, or.......) of your UA-cam posts.....
D Stock brings so many child time memories. Used to live in Richmond, used to go to school at Gunnersbury until 1999. I loved those seats, and the single slide doors oh and the old paint job before the refurbishment.
I always remember being at Hammersmith station, and hearing D stocks departing and arriving as I went down to the platform. I'll also miss how you could see so many d stocks and and only like two circle trains during the stretch from glocester road to tower hill. The thing I will miss most is the sounds it makes when it hits welded track or track joint which bursts out rhythm in my ears. RIP D Stock. I wish I was there!!
I understand, I feel the same I don't think there being scraped, so if you look out of the left window on a s stock and take the same route as I took* (sorry, I can't remember what it was🙁) *you might just be able to see it.
I miss this stock. It was the stock I use to go to school with, along with trips. I do love the S Stock though; very clean bright and slick. But maybe adding coloured poles and 'District Line chairs' will bring back that District feeling.
@@siroofing5610 Yeah they're used for the different lines. But I'd love it if there was a special feature, like having LED poles which change colour depending on the line. Now THAT would be cool.
Brought a little tear to my eye, that. Rode the D as a boy and man, up and down the District Line and even the East London Line as a nipper. They're as old as me - now I know middle age has descended!
I rode these from 1980 to 1987 from earls court to kew, before then older trains then in 1980 these appeared, now replaced yet again in 2017, after 37 years of service it makes me feel so old!!
R32 in NYC has been around for 53 years, and still does morning and evening rush on the C. It amazes me how long these things last when you think about how much they take.
Eh, they're not the best built things in the world but they're certainly better than a lot of others, like the 1992 stock, which I'm surprised are still even in operation...
I remember being on Earl's Court in the morning on my way to Paddington when the station lady mentioned that it was the last day the D-stock was running. I used to catch it all the time when I worked in Bow and to me it was just another old Tube train. To be honest, I prefer the S-stock now because you can walk through the train, it has air conditioning during the warmer months and there's decent heating in the colder months.
I have lived at both ends of the District for 40 years on and off, and these trains were so well designed and built, apart from the too narrow doors. The pre refurb interior smell was the tube equivalent of damp dog. Musty yet somehow familiar, thus comforting.
In the olden days, 2004-2008, you used to be my friend while I look over the fence to see you passing Sainsbury's during Chiswick. You're my real friend than anyone can imagine. I have never felt so happy that time. Goodbye D78-Stock District Line. I will miserably miss you so much!
These trains will always be remembered, I came to Richmond and Kew Gardens in 2012 and I would always see these glorious trains. The only thing on my bucket list is to see one in real life. Converted or not. The clacking sound on the tracks and the motor sound will be in my head forever. It’s front and single-doors we’re so beautiful to watch leave Richmond and Kew Gardens. I almost cried when I heard the song at Kew and when I watched the last one leave for Upminster on April 21st, 2017. That was the last time I ever saw a D-Stock.
Aww I loved this video! Also love the moquette scarves, and credit to those guys for recreating that promotional photo - bravo everyone :) I loved the D-stocks, but I like the new trains too
It was a great day, the 'D' stock is already missed! It was nice to see you both, sadly I wish I had come and say 'Hi' but didnt want to interupt any of your filming and interviewing! Thank you for producing a great short film on the last 'D' stock service train. Look forward hopefully seeing you both in the future, possibly for the '72/73' Stock last ride.
A lot of these trains were actually adapted for overground use. Last year I was using a service between bletchely and Bedford with these modernised d-stick trains, and aside from a facelift and some new seats, it is relatively the same! However the flip up seats were removed...
I remember the first time when I ever went on trains. This was the first out of a million I think. The D Stock had and will always revolutionise the way Londoners travel. The noise when it leaves a station though, sounds like an old F1 car but with a single gear
The first time I took a D stock was in 2010 I only witnessed it for 8 years and because my local station is Dagenham Heathway I saw a lot of them R.I.P D stock I'll always remember your traction engine...
One hell of a great journey! And good for me as I met Geoff! Geoff you are a legend! Shame I couldn't show you Shippea Hill in time, but oh well I always have the video xD
@@buksi6342 they could if they wanted to because they could simply install the deep tube 09 stock and also the D78 is younger than the 73 stock that runs on the Piccadilly Line so there is some reason for TFL to do that
The Piccadilly already has new trains on order, due for arrival some time in 2023, so are likely to be known as the 2023 stock, but for the moment are known as the New Tube for London (NTfL). These will also end up replacing the 1972 stock on the Bakerloo, as well as eventually the 1992 stock on the Central and Waterloo & City lines
A similar event happened on the 13:09 to Sha Tin on 6th May 2022, the last ever service operated by the MLR, ending a 40-year run. The captain had an announcement about the train's history as it departed. The atmosphere was even greater than this D stock farewell. There were more than 3000 passengers onboard the final train, and even more were at Sha Tin station to send it off as it left for the depot.
MTR has just made a send off to the 12 car SP1900 trains in a similar manner. There was a special announcement when the last service arrived at Sheung Shui at 11:57 pm, with the train number changed to 886 when it returned to the depot.
4 years later, now waiting for some of these D Stock carriages to spring up on the Isle of Wight and at various places in Wales!! Aspley Guise already enjoys their company!!
From some reason, I always liked the D-stock because its overhead voice that comes on at each station was more melodic than the more monotone voice of the S-stock, especially the Bow Road Station (westbound, towards Mile End).
It’s probably going to be the 2030s by the time the current Central Line stock is retired, but I will definitely be there for the last day. Tears will most likely be shed!
So many enthusiasts criticise the 1992 TS, albeit for it's maintenance liability; however I love the 1992 TS trains for their body-side window-glazing which extends into the roof-profile, a great design feature. I also love the body-profile which doesn't have a crease at waist-level thus creating maximum space for the interiors. I also love the ambience of the interiors for the dim lighting.
LU staff were even selling D-stock pins as a souvenir for 5 quid each. Quite expensive but I bought one for memory anyway... (apparently only 5 were left by the time the train was at Upney towards Ealing Broadway)
Brilliant video. The D stock has been one of the greatest Underground trains in the history of London Transport. Looking forward to travelling on the S stock trains in the future.
Missed seeing the D78s on my last visit back home. Happy memories of working these as a guard out of Acton then Parsons Green Depots. I missed then when opo displaced the guards, and now I miss them again. Was hoping TFW would lease some for our branch but after scrapping the nasty pacers we’ve had other old stock cascaded for our service while the D trains are apparently in North Wales.
Watched this, thought "I'm sure there were buttons on those doors". Frantic googling later and yup, refurbished away in early 2000s, long after I'd stopped riding them in the 1980s. Memories of riding stuffed into one of these down to fulham broadway back in the "fun" days with grandad :)
a few months ago, i luckily got on a d stock at tower till going to Wimbledon and got on one on the 16th of April from embankment to Wimbledon. i loved the d stock. it was my childhood. the seat moquette, the transverse seats and the front of it. i just love it. shame they are gone now. one last thing, some guests came to my house for a while and saw the d stock on its last time going to earls court. the train was obviously very busy. they even took a video of it. :-D and :'(
Last time i was in Ealing Broadway a Bomb went off didn't get back to my B&B in Ealing Common till 5 in the morning, was at work at 7 The Police were saying it was the IRA So many years ago now
I'm so happy the "D" Stock trains are going to be reused and not scrapped like the 1967 Stock, A Stock C Stock and the one that I thought was the biggest waste was the 1983 stock because I think it had the shortest life out of all the tube trains but I'm not entirely sure
My favorite London Underground train. I remember going on them in the 80s and I thought they were pure quality with their Aluminium skinned carriages and the elegant single outer doors that looked so ultra modern and clean in design. They were quiet and powerful when pulling out of a station and of course were made by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath, England before the Company was taken over. I wonder why they are being replaced; I guess in these times where labour is more expensive than in the past the bean counters decide to pull the plug on keeping older designs going, I dunno. After all the wearing parts like bogie bearings will presumably have been changed many times in their long life. On the other hand new trains are usually lighter and have regen braking to save energy.
I learnt how to drive the overground trains (465, 377, 375, 387 and 395.) But I am still learning how to drive the D stock, jubilee, s stock, bakerloo and Northern lines.
My last D-stock ride: 22 Jan 2017 Victoria - Tower Hill. (first train that pulled in!) I personally went to thank the driver when I got off. Goodbye D-stock - I SALUTE YOU!!
quite a few weeks ago me and my friend spoke to the driver on the district who let us in the cab to take a picture who said he didn't like the D stock as the stop markers are different to the S stock. he sounded similar to Bisley00 I think that's what his name is who was a district line driver on youtube.
I can remember seeing these brand new coming out of the works at Washford Heath. I was a freight guard (don't exist any more!) at Holbeck TMD in Leeds, and we had one working to Birmingham (I think it was passenger actually). And road-learning and working the line I could see the gleaming new trains in the distance.
When I saw a D-stock at Richmond last week while waiting for my South West train to Reading, I thought nothing other than "What a surprise, long time no see!" I wasn't expecting that to be "Good bye" as well.. :(
had a feeling id have to be in this video - and sure enough I am! excellent video Geoff, hopefully you'll be around on the first day of the new crossrail class 345
The thing that made this sad was that unlike the A and C stocks, these really had a lot more life in them. I’m glad so many have been reused by Vivarail. I’ll always miss the old D stock trains though, so many memories of them.
D stock were some reliable and tough machines. Their distant relative, Hong Kong MTR's M-Train, also made by Metro-Cammell, are still going strong even their retirement has started this year.
Rob Mule The North isn't taking the Class 230, we've gone for New build, plus newer second hand stuff. The only people that were gonna take on the 230 were London Midland, but that contract went up in flames with the Train itself
Yes it was reported a few years ago that the Leeds-Harrogate-York line would be replacing the Pacers (horrible ride, bus seats and squealing wheels - especially on the tight bend at Crimple Viaduct) with "discarded" tube trains (maybe these D Stock ones) but since then they've changed their minds and gone for purpose-build heavy-rail trains, rather than LT trains. Maybe the D stock will go to the Isle of Wight for the Ryde-Shanklin service. Are any going to museums? I imagine the Acton (Covent Garden overspill) LT museum will get one.
Before I was a professional entertainer/radio presenter, I drove buses on London Transport, the 207 from Uxbridge to Shepherds Bush. One afternoon on my way back to Uxbridge, at the traffic lights at Ealing Broadway, a lorry came round from the station, with a train carriage on the back, and it just got round, with, I SWEAR, barely 2 inches from my drivers cab. If it had hit my bus, imagine the accident report...How did the accident happen? WELL....THIS TRAIN CAME ROUND THE CORNER!!!! Shortly after that, just about every Friday afternoon, someone would crash into the back of my bus, in the bus stop. This went on for about 6 months. I transferred to the underground, I thought, you so and so's can't find me down here. SADLY FATE SHOWED ME I WAS WRONG! One morning at Northfields Depot, I was crossing the tracks in the train shed, to get to my train, when a train came through the shutters! I thought, "I'M OUTTA HERE!!!!" That's when I turned to being a professional entertainer, later, a radio presenter.
I remember the first time i rode the d-stock we coasted into EBY and i couldn't believe how silent the train was... its a shame i missed the last ever one :/ i used to get so excited by the prospect of riding a D-stock over the s... a few times I traveled Uxbridge to west ruislip via as many lines as i could and it was always disappointing when an s-stock rolled in with Ealing Broadway written on the top xD
My favourite trains the jubilee, for the sound as accelarating and pulling into a station. Really going to miss them trains, the 96 stock and the northen line trains.
If the guy who collects train seat pattern trainers can find a girlfriend who does the same, there is hope.

Very sad. Many fond memories.
They are being used for a mainline service north of England
Miss these trains so much, loved the massive single doors
the s stock sucks i want the d stock back
I learnt how to drive the overground trains (465, 377, 375, 387 and 395.)
But I am still learning how to drive the D stock, jubilee, s stock, bakerloo and Northern lines.
My last D-stock ride: 22 Jan 2017 Victoria - Tower Hill. (first train that pulled in!) I personally went to thank the driver when I got off.
Goodbye D-stock - I SALUTE YOU!!
Nice to see this video.. once I was a regular traveller of D-stock District line from Putney Bridge to Monument. Bid-adieu D-STOCK.
quite a few weeks ago me and my friend spoke to the driver on the district who let us in the cab to take a picture who said he didn't like the D stock as the stop markers are different to the S stock. he sounded similar to Bisley00 I think that's what his name is who was a district line driver on youtube.
Try a D-Train once lockdown is over.
had a feeling id have to be in this video - and sure enough I am!
excellent video Geoff, hopefully you'll be around on the first day of the new crossrail class 345
You can still ride these but as the class 230 version.
Who agrees the new stock train is like the future for the us
1:15 It's District FC vs. Metropolitan United. Goalless at half time. Who will win? We'll find out - after the break.
It was a pleasure meeting Geoff, It was lucky i found him on the train back to Eailing. X3
Good news! Some have been converted into D trains and some will run on IOW
Is there any info as to whether LT museum have kept any carriages? I hope they have!
At least these trains live on in the form of class 230s
In the MTR of Hong Kong, we have the same trains since 1979 (and a lot of them), wondering why these D-Stock trains need to retire so early.
they were in good condition and reliable but unable to provide enough capacity
One thing which will be missed is the transverse seating, which is much better than the longitudinal seating on the S-stock.
I used to ride these trains back in 2015 all the time when I lived in London, I recently got back into trains and had no idea they got rid of them
I really enjoyed watching this video... sadly never got to ride one of these iconic trains
Those D-stock nikes are honestly great looking
I was off Friday. Wish I knew..😩.
How do we find about these kind of events. Reckon Bakerloo will change soon
Geoff Marshall sounds like a right Diamond 😂
Don't you know the D Stock will eventually become the Class 230?
Think up north in Yorkshire but doubtful I'll see them.
The D-stock was great, but I can't say I prefer it to the S-stock. The S-stock has by far the best motor sound of any modern train.
One train I'm definitely going to miss :(
My favourite trains the jubilee, for the sound as accelarating and pulling into a station. Really going to miss them trains, the 96 stock and the northen line trains.
