I know the perfect house for you Geoff - My old one in Wilkinson Street SW8...The Victoria line runs right under the garden..you can only *just* hear it and our lease was strange saying we only owned the top 20ft of our garden, everything under that belonged to LT! In the summer , if you sunbathed on the lawn on your stomach you could feel the rumble coming up through your body...like a massage chair...very relaxing!
when I caught the Victoria line I was surprised because everyone wasn't like sardines in a tin!we actually weren't in a crowded train! YAY to Victoria line!
I still think that the Victoria Line should be given the go ahead to be extended including from Walthamstow Central to Woodford or South Woodford and from Brixton to Croydon or Beckenham or Bromley. With the Bakerloo Line to be extended from Elephant & Castle to Hayes and Bromley via Lewisham. And with 2 new Underground stations being added on Old Kent Road.
Hi I was an Apprentice to London Transport in the 1960's. Up until the Victoria line was built all lines were interconnected for maintainance purposes. The tracks are service from Lilly Bridge depot. The trains were service on a daily bases in their local running depot of which each line has at least one and all major service was carried out at the West London depot at Acton Town which is now the museum storage depot.
Here in Los Angeles our single subway line runs Peak: 6tph, Other times: 5tph, after 8pm and weekends: 3tph :(:(:( be glad yall got good infrastructure!!!
Now all we are missing is more ventilation shafts. The trains are so close together that the line is in an average of 35 degrees Celsius in rush hour. They desperately need more ventilation shafts.
Well I could agree that this is some cool thing... but people move to London for the reason among many others that it does not get 35 degrees there... at the seaside you go and dive in the tropical ocean. In the London underground you can take a bath in someone else's sweat... yikes... as people have their coats on of course :D
Is that all? Not that bad. Besides vent shafts won't help. It's the heat off the brakes and motors then people. So you'd feel it before it hit the shaft anyway
Sounds like Singapore's North East Line too (similar length & ridership with the Victoria Line, but with a larger loading gauge, so although it's CBTC signalling system allows for up to 40 trains/h, there's usually only ~28 at peak hours)
the new tube for london is coming to the piccadilly soon. I'm pretty sure most of the time, faults on the piccadilly would be from the ageing rolling stock.
H010 most of the Piccadilly line faults come from outdated signalling and particularly control room apparatus, meaning service recovery is slow or control room mistakes cause service disruption. The 1973 stock is actually very reliable for its age
NYC subways that aren't cut and cover are drilled through solid rock. London Tube is through clay. And NYC subways are all 4 track while the Tube is 2 track. And once London got past the postwar period it really started to invest in the Tube. NYC didn't update anything for half a century and only started about two decades ago. But still there are obvious problems with NYC subways and lack of new lines and extensions that should have been done fifty years ago, and cost way too much when they do happen.
We just looked - Geoff uploaded a video to his channel yesterday .. we uploaded this one (with Geoff in it) to our channel today - the day after. Maybe you're in a different timezone to us! :-D
Geoff, it’s wonderful engineering at Victoria, and think that’s is going to be a victim of its own success, in that there are only two tube tunnels, at currently entrances are blocked off/shut to passengers from the British Rail concourse at rush hour, or if the service is not running well, all this will do is build up more people underground creating a H&S issue for evacuations, creating even more overcrowding, and at present, the current trains can’t cope at peak periods. So in essence, the project is deeply floored, as the Victoria line should have been a four tunnel system throughout, allowing the stabilisation of trains at key points, allowing other trains to pass or terminate mid-way taking away the peaks congestion at rush hour, even out of peak times, the service is congested, adding a new ticket hall and entrances does help, but for the reasons mentioned above, it’s storing up trouble for the future.
Just to let you know they promise to finish Victoria station for 2018 there is even to HUUGE adverts on the construction site as well stating that they are going to finish for 2018 so well done LUD "We re-invest all of our income to improve your service" :D
The Victoria line has the advantage that is A to B with no lines splitting or joining, unlike most other tube lines, allowing the tight schedules. At the Brixton end, the driver "steps back" and another driver takes the control in the opposite direction to keep up the schedules.
With that many trains so close together in an automated system , your going to get much more service problems when trains fail or signaling technology goes up the spout . Plus you only have a few turn back crossovers to divert a failed service onto to it can tip out and run empty to the depot ,
Geoff: Please can you make a video on how TFL distributes the fare received from passengers in between different train lines in London especially when a passenger might travel using multiple lines at one go?
Large, spacious passageways - for example - signify *_massively improved_* .. besides, more bang for your construction quid were you to create backup lines with fresh stations for the sake of connectivity than unnecessarily reworking your built inadequacies 🍸
Most deep level lines are completely isolated from other tube lines in terms of tracks. The only inter-connected lines are the sub-surface lines. The tube is very different from say the NYCS, where trains can go wherever they want if they just change track.
Each tube line has it's own array of terminus depots. There's one at each end and usually a couple in the middle. And theoretically you could use one deep level rolling stock and travel on every line possible. It's just a matter of finding the interchangeable tracks and reversing one or two times
When it gets to the end of the line either Brixton or Walthamstow Central do they have to quickly change drivers within about a 1 min before the next train comes in?
No the jubilee and northern line use a system called CBTC (communication based train control) which was installed by Thales, also being installed on the district hammersmith and city circle and metropolitan lines. This CBCT allows for in cab signalling by making use of axel counters, inductive loops and wayside radio equipment which the train is constantly communicating its position to.
Hi Geoff. I'm not so sure whether you are aware of the problems in Singapore. But I think it would be great to do a Q&A in Singapore of the Victoria Line 36 TPH. Any chance you & V will come to Asia? Another thing is - how HK MTR used the Tube Model & saw flaws...modified and worked with the model and is now a world's best enterprise. Your thoughts...?

pics or didnt happen
but the trains don’t have a driver I thought 🤔
they do
noob168 i actually do have pics and videos that were on my snapchat, i asked the driver if it was his 1st day
The Victoria Line is automated so the train would've been going there anyway, would assume the driver forgot to tell people to get off!
36 trains per hour is massive! Great job!

Hi, I drove a 2009 stock train here because my mates dad works for the tube. Good vid👍👌
That's 🅒🅞🅞🅛!
But on which line is he working?
Victoria Line?
I'm happy to see that Victoria station will open the new sections soon. With all the building works going on it has been looking pretty shabby.

Especially for the Waterloo & City line which rides entirly underground! :)

I just used the Victoria line today. Victoria station, too. What a coinky-dink.
Thank you for another very interesting video about the London Underground system.
I love London and its Underground System ❤️
This DTgr works with the northern line. I was train spotting at elephant and castle and then there was a long queue of trains.
You get to go to so many interesting places I'm a bit jealous if I'm honest.
They should upgrade the bloody Pic line asap give how literally it fails every single day

Geoff one question why are the walls and the roof of the underground stations just gone???
"London's most busiest Tube lines"
When it gets to the end of the line either Brixton or Walthamstow Central do they have to quickly change drivers within about a 1 min before the next train comes in?
Good question, but I think they do
Why do these & S Stock have a partial taillight in the headlights? Is it a parking only light, if so why not just use one / partial red taillight?
Great video. A diagram of the new Victoria station would have been nice.
