Boss were considered the absolute business in the 80s and 90s. And then everyone wanted retro styled stuff with silly names and Boss were looked down on. People were spending a small fortune on pedals to replicate sounds that were probably recorded with Boss pedals in the first place. Nice to see people have come back around to how good they are. And bulletproof as well.
Sick intro solo. Blues driver has always been that do it all sleeper pedal for me. I like to mess around with different tones a lot I’m always on the road so I have to travel light can’t bring my whole board. This one blues driver pedal covers almost everything it’s one of those people take for granted 100%. Glad someone in the world sees what I see!
The most interesting thing for me in this video is hearing how your playing has evolved over the years- the old CB clip is slightly different but unmistakably still has your tonal fingerprint. So cool!
Nah tone's in the fingers. To prove it I set up my guitar and played along with Chris in his video. I put my pick down. No difference in tone. Then I removed my pedals. No difference in tone. I took the strings off my guitar. No difference in tone. I removed the pickups. No difference in tone. I removed the lead from the guitar. No difference in tone. I put the guitar down. Still I could hear the same tone as I moved my fingers Then I realised I had the pod xt set to 'tuner' and it was Chris's guitar that I could hear.
Vintage snobs piss me off. They act like only gear made before 1970 is capable of delivering great tone. Chris, you are an inspiration to players who are trying to realize their voice without spending loads of cash on their tone. We all want cool amps and guitars, but knowing how much comes from the player's mind and hands is made more evident by using readily accessible gear.
By far my number one favorite pedal. Flirt with others, but stay married to this one. And You--Well you continue to inspire and amaze! Stay Well Groovy One!
I really enjoyed the beautiful and inspiring opening solo, a masterclass in the use of melody, intensity, dynamics and phrasing to build a tension arc (with a refreshing absence of anything even remotely remininiscence of shredding ;))
That ending solo. My new favorite solo ever since listening to it from that live jam you did when something from your pedalboard broke but did the Ain't My Time solo, anyway. As of this writing, it's been my 10th repeat of this end solo you did here. Magnificent.
Watching you play makes me wanna pick up my guitar. You are such an inspiration man. Thanks both for Cardinal Black and these videos. Much love from Turkey!
BD-2 was the first pedal i ever bought. Knew it was a specific sound I had to have for what i liked to play and listen to. The musician that sold me on it was Yoshiaki Manabe with the Pillows.
The Blues Driver was on my board for years and despite having tried loads of other drive pedals, this is the one that I keep coming back to. What you call agricultural is just what I love about it. :)
I use this pedal by itself through a Fender Blues Jr and the versatility of sound you can get with just your guitars volume knob is incredible. I like to write loops through another amp and then hit the ABY switch and solo through the blues jr with the boss blues driver. Most excellent. Love your videos!
I cannot comment for Brother Nelson, but my impression was/is: Prince was not a gear-hound; he'd be the first one to admit to it: so...he used a lot of BOSS pedals...not due to a lot of A/B comparisons....I think he just grabbed whatever was popular; readily available. He was far more into creativity, than seeking some glorious...difficult to find guitar tone; he didn't even like to disclose what he was using because he wanted fans/guitar players to find their own sound and not copy him. That's my take on it, as a long-time fan, but certainly not a knock on BOSS; "iconic" indeed. Bless you and thank you, Chris, for the musical inspiration.
It gets downright gnarly! However, dropping the tone and the volume makes such a difference to getting just wonderful harmonic overtones out of that panel. Another exemplary showing Chris… As always, thank you so much and hope you’re able to keep them coming. PS I am definitely going to be making your show in Nebraska from Colorado. Looking forward to it. Be safe.
Yet again, Awesome Chris! As many commenters will say, "I have one!" ... Yes indead, I do as well... bought it to add boost to my lap steel rig! It is interesting in how you pair these devices one to another, could give you a whole new experience! Tone/sustain/warmth/buttery... Fascinating study
I exclusively used my SD-1 for years until I worked out how to use the BD-2 about a week ago. What a pedal! It’s great for that low gain bluesy drive we all know and love ❤
Boss, MXR, Electro Harmonics are all in the house of Iconic pedal enclosures. And almost equally. They all kind of came in a wave in the 70s. At least if you lived in America can't speak for the UK or elsewhere. Very interesting that both MXR and EH are from New York state. Rochester and NYC. The MXR distortion Plus was the first big od pedal everyone wanted in my world. Boss was an "economy" brand from Japan like the first cars from there. And like the cars, proved to be well worth it. May the precision and clarity of Japan never succumb to cultural rot.
All pieces of a jigsaw. Player, Guitar, amp, etc… are all parts of the puzzle, just one piece won’t get you exactly the same sound. But as you’ve shown everyone can make it part of their sound! Excellent playing ❤
I noticed how you pick , I do the same thing I use my ring finger and pinky to lean on the fret board , I guess it gives stability , I haven’t seen anyone else do it !!!
Hey chris, lovely Video as usual you are a true devotee of music and everyone can tell by looking at what you Produce. I was wondering since you do These crazy good bends if you could talk about your experience with string gauge? Love from germany ❤
Yup through the years Ive always held my Blues Driver in high regards. It had that raggaty tone I was looking for most of the time and it played well with my other pedals. I switched over to doing an one man Acoustic show a few years ago and it even worked for boosting my leads over loops. I did buy the Waze craft version when it came out., but even though I like it ,I prefer the old one.
I got a similar story but with my OD3. I paid 55 euros years ago, it was my first proper overdrive pedal. over the years I bought and sold a lot of 'boutique' pedals, even the priciest ones, searching for something better. I sold all of them and put the Boss on my board again. its the best od for me. chewy, creamy, and also works great as a clean boost. I have to try the BD2 as well, I think I'm gonna like it :)
Nice video. One addition, I have this pedal for a long time. I could not replicate it exactly on Helix. There is a detailed youtube video somewhere how to apply different settings.
Love your playing and I never comment but I just wanted to address that intro tone. Your tone is always great and instantly recognizable. Not sure what pedals give you that creamy, mid-focused tone that you usually dial in on these videos. Maybe it's just a by-product of using a tone to cut through the mix in your shows. This tone, though, is the most different I've heard from you in a while. It's open and clear. Really dig it.
When I was 16 back in 2005 I was shopping for my first overdrive pedal and had my eye on a BD-2 I saw in my local music store. But the day I went in to get it, it was sold. So the guy in the store suggested I’d try a SD-1 instead, which I ended up buying. To this day I have still never played a BD-2 … And I still feel I’m missing out on something. It’s about time I get my hands on one!
Awesome as always Chris 🎸🔥 My first decent drive pedal was a 90s blues driver. Didn't really like the sound when I was younger but now I'm going to have to get one after this. Back then I got a Keeley TS808 and just used purely that one TS and my 2004 US Standard Strat into a 90s Fender tweed Blues Deluxe (USA one which I wish I never sold now) Only yesterday I was thinking it's been a long time since I bought another Overdrive I don't need 😅 this might be a sign
Wow, the older - I mean younger - Chris Buck didn't sound very much Chris-Bucky! Which is a great example how you can develop from let's say generic "another-shredder" but still damn good guitarist into A TRULY GUITAR LEGEND WITH HIS UNIQUE STYLE! Wonderfull!
Gutted I missed the Glasgow show as I was ill . Great to hear a one off demo of a great pedal . That said I saw a great video the other week from a Bulgarian Blues club 😳and the guy had a great tone and I messaged them and he used a JHS Andy Timmons into a Mesa Boogie combo . The JHS is more than double the cost of the BD2 .
Watching that 2009 clip objectively, I'd say gee that guy on guitar is damn good! But clearly, sometime since then, Chris has done a deal with the devil. Or just got better and better every day, through hard work and dedication. [Pleasant surprise so hear Andy Timmons throw in one of the great riffs - Turn To Stone. Such a simple riff, and soooo effective!]
Truth is you sound like you.... Our minds trick us into believing we need something else, i believe once we have settled on a couple of sounds we can stick to them in my experience.
I agree, even if I still do prefer the OCD for that kind of sound, for the slight marshallesque mid high push, the BD2 remains more overdriven fender like, a bot more hollow, with a healthy bass
That intro solo deserves a like
Dude was on fire, amazing
That intro solo 🤯😍
Just showing off ;)
Might be my favorite Chris Buck solo
Your name's 1" I "from a disappointed Scotsman! 😏
From a Scotsman ❤
@@allanmills6540 what? One I? Are you sure?
Every one of his entry solos!

Chris, your phrasing is absolutely sublime. Thank you.
Sick intro solo. Blues driver has always been that do it all sleeper pedal for me. I liked the sound of the the strat
That intro solo is spiritual. Definitely feels some kind of way. So amazing. 🤘🏼
I have a TS9, a Tumnus, a Nobels and a Blues Driver on my board. The BD has the best interaction with humbuckers, by a mile.
Vintage snobs piss me off. They act like only gear made before 1970 is capable of delivering great tone. So many rave comments about the intro, but the outro is stellar also. Well done on both, Chris!
Because nowadays only a few people watch videos til the end…
By far my number one favorite pedal. Flirt with others, but stay married to this one. And You--Well you continue to inspire and amaze! Stay Well Groovy One!
That intro was sick. I bought my BD-2 years ago and modded it with the Formal Supreme mod kit. I particularly like it with my Strats.
I really enjoyed the beautiful and inspiring opening solo, a masterclass in the use of melody, intensity, dynamics and phrasing to build a tension arc (with a refreshing absence of anything even remotely remininiscence of shredding ;))
That ending solo.

Holy sh*t! The intro, how? Man, you're unique and so talented 🙉
Bravo. Boss is boss. Amazing playing.
Watching you play makes me wanna pick up my guitar. You are such an inspiration man. Thanks both for Cardinal Black and these videos. Much love from Turkey!
Every time I plug in my Keeley Phat Mod (blues driver clone), I'm impressed. Has a satisfying top end and cleans up with volume.
You inspire me so much. Your guitar solos and playing speak to me so much. You just have a way of making your guitar sing. It’s incredible
Dude, that's the best playing and sound you've ever had!!
how does this man only have 227K subscribers?
If you know, you know.
Ask Taylor Swift's fans why.
This solo is so pleasing and leggendary that now has got its own variation... Magic
BD-2 was the first pedal i ever bought. Knew it was a specific sound I had to have for what i liked to play and listen to. The musician that sold me on it was Yoshiaki Manabe with the Pillows.
Never knew Manabe used the Blues Driver, but now i’m sold too!
The Blues Driver was on my board for years and despite having tried loads of other drive pedals, this is the one that I keep coming back to. What you call agricultural is just what I love about it. :)
Such a distinct sound to your playing. Brilliant!
My fav boss gain pedal
Wow that intro just WOW cheers Chris.
Sensational playing on that intro! Nice one mate
I may spend a week or two learning your intro, that was truly fantastic.
Ohhh.....MG!!!! The SOLO in intro....
I use this pedal by itself through a Fender Blues Jr and the versatility of sound you can get with just your guitars volume knob is incredible.
I like to write loops through another amp and then hit the ABY switch and solo through the blues jr with the boss blues driver. Most excellent.
Love your videos!
It was nice to hear that Slash have his eyes on you ,👍👍
Slash who?? Chris is in a league of his own⭐️
@@martydibergi5228 No kidding. If Slash is one of Chris's influences, he has _far_ surpassed him to my ears.

One of the best overdrive ever.
Woah. Best version of that solo I've herd you play so far Chris. Insane tone 🤯
I have the Waza Craft version and it is always on one of my boards. Excellent pedal, sounds great with almost all my amps.
"Tied Up in Blue" intro was 🔥🔥🔥. Learned a bit more about pedals. Thank you 🧠 😌 Awww babies at 3:43.
I exclusively used my SD-1 for years until I worked out how to use the BD-2 about a week ago. What a pedal! It’s great for that low gain bluesy drive we all know and love ❤
LOVE MINE.
What a great and underrated BOOST !
Takes me back to late 70’s 80’s rock’n’ blues music 🎉
Good golly Miss Molly... that opening solo is utterly immaculate...
That musical intro just sent me sailing... wow
thanks for coming to ACM last week, it was surreal to actually chat to you lol
Boss, MXR, Electro Harmonics are all in the house of Iconic pedal enclosures. And almost equally. They all kind of came in a wave in the 70s. Fantastic on CD, Orgasmic Live. Bristol Trinity - that solo - tears in my eyes. Thank you Guv 👍
Such a great intro. Chris! 🎶🎸👍👏
Love mine. I’ve thought I could live without it a few times and taken it off the board. Always comes straight back again. It’s got something special.
so brilliant playing and fantastic sound ! Could you make a friday freedworks about your Fantasic sustain 😊
Ok...Holy Crap !! How did I not know about Cardinal Black !... Fantastic Music. Very impressive lead singer.
The Monte Allums mods take Boss pedals to another level
I modded mine with his kit probably 10 or more years ago. I generally do not like OD pedals but the BD2 is the one I like most.
Best pedal ever made
I have had mine for over 20 years. Next to the zendrive type pedals it’s my favorite for sure.
To heck with the pedal! Where do I get a set of Chris hands????? That is where the Real Tone is!!!!
I absolutely love Boss pedals, especially their dirt pedals. Along with my Eventide H90's, I totally have a 80's sound.
My favorite pedal ever. Stock, Keeley mod, waza, the new muse driver. Doesn’t matter one will always be on my board
All pieces of a jigsaw. Player, Guitar, amp, etc… are all parts of the puzzle, just one piece won’t get you exactly the same sound. But as you’ve shown everyone can make it part of their sound! Excellent playing ❤
Love my BDW2! I never thought I would like it as much as I do
I noticed how you pick , I do the same thing I use my ring finger and pinky to lean on the fret board , I guess it gives stability , I haven’t seen anyone else do it !!!
I had to play a show on backline, which was a brand new DeLuxe not broken in. The BD-2 w/ Keeley mod was wonderful. Upset that I sold it!
Hey chris, lovely Video as usual you are a true devotee of music and everyone can tell by looking at what you Produce.

Thanks for the analysis, Chris! I've been considering a BD-2, and I definitely understand it better now. ✌️

I used to use a boss bd-2 and then I found the Mxr fet driver and never looked back. To me they are quite similar. Just gotta love a good fuzzy drive.
I’ll have to try one out. Thanks Chris!
I’ve got two of these on my board set for different levels of gain. Always get questions about my tone, and that’s the secret sauce!
Nice video. One addition, I have this pedal for a long time. I could not replicate it exactly on Helix. There is a detailed youtube video somewhere how to apply different settings.
Power blues never gets old.
been playing one since 2001. it can’t be beat. the Monte Allums H2O mod takes it to another level. nothing pushes your amp quite like it
Buckmaster. You are indeed a cad and a bounder. Top playing.
I use it as my amp in a box pedal, love it great sound and dynamic !
Love your playing and I never comment but I just wanted to address that intro tone. Your tone is always great and instantly recognizable. I remember when it first came out.....as well as the DS-1
Cool little pedal, smoking solo tone.
Interesting, I sold all my fancy pedals, these days TS808, BD-2, CH-1 Super Chorus & a Delay into a 68 Princeton Reverb.
that tone makes me want to cook a roast dinner
😂

My two favourite pedals are the Blues Driver and MXR Carbon Copy.
Had a keeley modded at one time and it was awesome- wish I never sold it. Best for what does
Got damn, that into! I can can attest to the BD2. I have one of the OG ones modded by Keeley from like 20+ years ago. Still stays on my board. 🤘
Holly shit next guitar legend
I’m currently wearing that same tshirt, proudly bought from the Chester gig 🎸 🤟🏻
Awesome as always Chris 🎸🔥
My first decent drive pedal was a 90s blues driver. Didn't really like the sound when I was younger but now I'm going to have to get one after this.

Only yesterday I was thinking it's been a long time since I bought another Overdrive I don't need 😅 this might be a sign
I got mine.... $35 in Grand Rapids, MI. I didn't use it till much later. But, I do like it better now.
I got mine from a guitar show in Aintree years ago for £40. It’s so versatile & mainstay of my board.
The DB2 and the Nobbles ODR are the very best in front low gain pre amp pedals ever designed.
Wonderfull!

God gave you a wonderful gift! praise HIM!
I love the BD2, I have recently heard it compared with with Boss SD3, which is a tad smoother with more mids by a tad.
That strat tone
Watching that 2009 clip objectively, I'd say gee that guy on guitar is damn good! But clearly, sometime since then, Chris has done a deal with the devil. One of the first pedals I had was a OD-1; which is even more obscure… To this day, nothing else sounds like it!
Great pedal! And don't forget your fellow Welshman and long time BD2 user Kelly Jones!
Best solo I’ve heard you play. Sounds like a backhanded comment but it’s not. You play lots of great stuff. But this one was super nice.
Truth is you sound like you.... Our minds trick us into believing we need something else, i believe once we have settled on a couple of sounds we can stick to them in my experience.
