    Lorraine Johnson was the mother of Baby Doll. Valet of some renown in the 1980s. Dusty Rhodes, Tully Blanchard and Gino Hernandez were some of her clients.

      It appears as if Toni Storm is trying to replicate the in-ring appearance that Lorraine Johnson had in the 1950s.

    Critics of ladies' pro wrestling should particularly note the well-dressed women in the second row of the audience who are clearly thoroughly enjoying four superlatively fit and amazingly tough fellow-females using their outstanding strength to cause each other tremendous pain.

    Very entertaining match. It's amazing that this entire match has survived. I noticed that around 13:50 Lorraine coughed from the choke hold and Shirley gave her a few seconds to recover. The women wrestlers from this era were great. The crowd is made up of adult men and women mostly all dressed up. Most of the men are wearing jackets and ties, and some of the women are even wearing hats. How different from today. Thanks.

      This match took place on October 28, 1955, at the Chicago Amphitheater. Social norms and fashion styles were very different then from what they are today in the 21st Century. T-shirts and jeans were only worn by men on very hot days. If the man did not work in a factory, farm, or mine, they usually wore slacks, a button-up shirt with a butterfly collar, and a casual wool or cotton jacket, depending upon the season of the year.
      Women that did not have jobs that determined their dress codes, usually wore a cotton house dress in order to be presentable, should visitors or friends stop by to visit.
      If men and women were going to have a weekend night on the town, with dinner followed by a movie or a sporting event, such as a pro wrestling show like this one. They would put on a suit and tie, or a woman would put on her best cotton or wool dress or woman’s suit, stockings, and presentable pumps or high-heeled shoes. Men would also were dress shoes on such nights, as sneakers were for almost exclusively athletic wear only at that time, although boys and girls started to wear them more often in the late-1950s.

      I would have lost my job at the carnival guessing the weight of women. I had Lorraine Johnson at 125 lbs tops. She must be 5'10ish! I want to clone her! LOL

    • @crushercathy69
      @crushercathy69 10 років тому +2

      Well, I'll tell you this much, it seems that announcing a woman wrestlers weight has changed a lot over time. Now they don't even bother at all, or the girl's weight is always understated, sometimes to a ridiculous degree. I blame it on our modern attitude that insists all women must be a dress size 2 and no more than 110 lbs. to be considered attractive anymore!!

    • @VintageSessionGuy
      @VintageSessionGuy 10 років тому

      crushercathy69 Yeah I think you are absolutely right. Way too many of today's women wrestlers turn invisible if they turn sideways. Very disappointing too as I have ALWAYS preferred my opponents be buxom and at least 140 lbs. I do not think I can legitimately submit to a toothpick.

    • @crushercathy69

      Hi Cindy Sue! You are the wife of the son of the 5 foot 4 130 pound "The Wrestling Housewife" Shirley Strimple and Roy McClarity!! So cool!
      I'm not really a pro wrestling fan but these 1950s ladies' matches were awesome!
      Your husband never got you into wrestling? 😅
      I just checked and I see that Roy had 4 children with Shirley. May I ask if your husband is Tony, Steven or Jeffrey?
      By the way, from 1:50 the announcer says "Well, we're off and running, this is a gals match. If you've never seen one of these you haven't lived."
      Totally agree! 😁

      There is a movie about the women wrestlers of yesteryear - Lipstick and Dynamite! Seems your mother-in-law isn't featured in it but it should still be interesting for you and Jeff.
      I haven't seen it myself, just the trailer on YT.

    WWE, take note: This is how wrestling (especially womens' wrestling) is done. If you don't learn from this, WWE HQ will resemble Stonehenge in England: people will be wandering around it saying "I wonder what they used to do here?"
