Amazing and simple, to use everyday objects we never see in this way and use science to project a new visual that otherwise is impossible viewing (without super glue) is great. Thank you.

+mrshub929 The real coins of plated steel are presently in circulation in the UK. They are included in the Magic Penny Kit available from the Grand Illusions shop or in the US from Fat Brain Toys.
Very interesting to notice that totally by accident half the coins were heads and half were tails facing the camera. Not only that but each copper and silver coin each had a head and a tail facing towards the camera
I don't mean to be a troll, but why is that interesting? I can actually explain why the coins line up in a row also. As you probably know, a physical system always seeks a favorably low energy state. The reason the coins line up is that the temporary magnetic dipoles in the domains (very small crystal structures) of the coins are closer together in that arrangement than if they are at an angle (by simple virtue of trigonometry). The closest they could be would be if the coins were just stacked on top of each other, but the magnet is too weak and set too straight in relation to the coins to throw them off balance. The normal force, friction, and temporary attractive magnetic attraction between the touching coins keeps them seated on top of each other, the magnet also negates the force of gravity, which would normally cause the coins to roll right off of each other in spite of the friction and normal force between the coins.
Thought the exact same thing once he broke out the magnet. Not really a shame, it's more of a shame I would think that they are using some type of steel slug for currency over in the U.K.!
Dave LeBlanc And none of them are in U.S. coins. I can't even get a rare earth magnet, that can make a 21mm wrench stand up on end, to attract a quarter.
Workin Alday I'd prefer copper plated steel to the copper plated zinc in modern cents - I've heard that they can actually be fatal if swallowed, due to the chemical reaction between what are, in effect, two terminals of a battery! No American currency has been silver since 1965, and the cent has been copper/zinc since 1982. I also just read that the US mint is looking at a new nickel that is also copper plated zinc, because of costs. Why don't they just make the damn things out of plastic and stop kidding us that the coins we use have any real value anyway?
Skraeling1000 Actually, worth mentioning, pre-1982 pennies are actually worth more than a cent in terms of the material. They have a value of around 2.2 cents (in materials, when melted down), while nowadays the value of a penny is probably .5 or less. If you can find 10,000 pre-1982 pennies (100$ worth) you can melt/sell the materials for ~220$. Kinda dumb.
That's a great little trick. Similarly, a drinking game we used to play was to sit a strong magnet in the middle of the table and place a beer bottle cap flat on top. The second bottle cap would then be placed on its edge leaning against the first cap so that it was sitting up vertically. Each following bottle cap would then be stacked on its edge in alternating directions one way and then the other so that the corrugated angled edges on the bottle caps would interlock with each other. 5 or 6 high was relatively easy but 9 high was the record until we added 2 extra magnets under the first magnet. We were then able to stack the bottle caps up to 15 high or more on their edges. At that height, they wanted to flip over on each other and collapse the tower.
Liters are a measure of volume. If you bring a box, bucket or basket that holds 3 liters and it's full of equipment, you'd be bringing 3 liters worth of equipment. I expect he was emphasizing the bulk of the equipment as opposed to the weight. Not the most usual, but nothing wrong with it.
You're missing that magnetism and gravity are totally different forces. Magnetism has to do with that material such as iron are ferromagnetic, meaning that the small magnetic forces in the iron are same oriented, causing a magnetic field. Other materials that are not magnetic is because these small magnets inside the material are randomly oriented, working against each other. Gravity has to do with the mass of the object, nothing else. Also the magnets pull the coins upwards, when gravity pulls them down. So if you were to do this on Jupiter, you would need stronger magnets, so the force from the magnets are almost equal to the force of gravity. Another thing that makes this experiment work is because the magnet holds the coins together, so they don't fall. This might be kind of badly written, but i hope you understood.
Justin Hall I agree on how the hell did that comment get 4 likes, it just doesn't make sense if you even know something about physics. But yeah just wanted to point out that Jupiter is a gas planet, so you couldn't stand on it. And also that the gravitational force on Jupiter is only 2.5 times the force on earth, and you wouldn't become a pancake, but you certainly would be laying on the ground.
Josh Mahler The UK uses the same nickel-copper and zink-copper alloys as the United States. We also have a greater overall GDP, and a greater per-capita GDP. So I'm not sure what you're referring to.

Thanks for sharing. Wonderful how such a relatively simple thing such as magnets can create such a stunningly sight to behold.
are many coins attracted to magnets? because here in Australia they are all made from non-ferrous metal.
U.S. coins are not magnetic either, well, depends on the year and which coin, but as a generality, they are not magnetic.

Yeah but the core is that deep in, so the outer layers of the planet would pull you upwards, so the gravity would't be as strong as on the surface :P
