      dont you mean your own ratsketball league? idk but id think youd have to jump through hoops to train them , be careful or youll foul up their training periods. youll have them bouncing all over the place if youre not careful. you may have to take a time out from everything else to do it.

    This video is blowing my mind. I had no idea rats were this fun and smart. Rat Basketball? Ha! These little guys are great. They perform tricks my dog could never do. And best of all, they actually seem to know what they're doing. How do you train these guys? Anyway, just yesterday I saw two rats at the W4th subway platform in NYC. And I watched them approach each other from a distance, stop, and give each other what was clearly an acknowledgement or possibly an affectionate greeting. They grasped each other's hands in what really looked like a hi-5. HA! It really looked that way, though. Then they parted. It struck me. They weren't just like roaches, just mindlessly independent selfish robotic things that crawl over each other's bodies. No! Rats are smart. And apparently they're fun pets, too.

    • @mickobrien3156

      Snicker Doodler Ya and I hear they can pee and poop everywhere they go. Rats and mice don't accumulate urine and feces in their bodies the way other animals do, like humans, for example, and dump it all at once. Instead they're constantly shitting and pissing everywhere. That's got to be a deal-breaker for most pet owners once they learn their poor bathroom habits. No pet will be 'cute' for very long if it's got horribly annoying quirks like peeing every minute on everything.
      There's a chemical they can give mice and rats that will make their urine glow under a black light... They performed this test on TV. They gave a rat this chemical and after just 30 minutes they then turned on a black light. The room was glowing. The damn rat pissed on everything. And it's hard to notice without the light, because often it's just little squirts. It's not like puddles of urine. But it's still a breeding ground for germs and spreads diseases. Rats squirt urine every minute like its a trail of bread crumbs to help it navigate. It also of course helps mark territory, and it's used to find mates, et cetera. But it's terribly worrisome if you're concerned at all about hygiene and bacteria and diseases and cleanliness.

    • @George-nx5lo
      @George-nx5lo 8 років тому +1

      Mick Obrien Wow thanks for the info, I was actually wondering why they would pee a trail everywhere. Seems like predators could track them easier, but this makes sense.
      This girl has the rats on carpet! They have probably peed on every inch of her room by now

    • @mickobrien3156
      @mickobrien3156 8 років тому +1

      Snicker Doodler Hi.
      Yes, some predators can track rats and mice by smelling their urine trails. Although rats and mice are constantly running around and don't stay still so it's less of a trail to anywhere and just a huge mess. It just pinpoints a general area for predators where they are likely to find a rat or mouse meal.
      Rats and mice don't have particularly strong defenses. They're not predators with claws and teeth and brute strength. But nature doesn't care about the individual. Evolution got around rat and mice physical limitations by making them breed in massive numbers. There always will be enough that survive to continue the rat and mice generations.
      And clearly, rats and mice are highly intelligent. And intelligence beats big teeth and claws and brute strength in my book.

    • @holyhailgun
      @holyhailgun 8 років тому +17

      This is ridiculous. Rats pee and poop just like any other animal, and can be taught to use a litter box. They do like to pee on things to mark their territory, but that's behavior they have control over.

    • @George-nx5lo
      @George-nx5lo 8 років тому +2

      holyhailgun I thought teaching a rat to only pee in a litter box was extremely difficult and almost pointless

      +Adventures in Louis Land (lsc9x) bit late, but...a few weeks after I posted this I found a guy on craigslist giving his away, cage and all for free. Weren't mistreated or anything, he was working 12 hour shifts and couldn't take care of them anymore. Two hooded girls, super sweet and active. Pretty much crammed in phonebooks and cardboard barriers all around the living room (bathroom's too tiny and unsafe) and I still gotta keep all hands on deck. They're my little troublemakers, but I love them, got my brother, dad, and even my mom to fall in love with them (she was the first). Thanks again :)

    • @ZombieSchwamp
      @ZombieSchwamp 9 років тому +17

      +Courtnay You can't just get one rat, they are packanimals and therefore cannot live alone.
      Also, don't get rats just because they're cute. Read as much as you possibly can about how to keep rats as pets and what they require.

    • @Svetlanoix
      @Svetlanoix 9 років тому +1

      +ZombieSchwamp They can perfectly leave alone but it is true to say that its better to have two or more of them. My rat lived 5 years being my only baby :)

    • @scarredxangel
      @scarredxangel 9 років тому +4

      +ZombieSchwamp chill. I'm not an idiot. You shouldn't get dogs just cause they're cute, but people do. Dogs, technically, are pack animals, but people always get one. People can do as they please as long as it's in the welfare of that animal. I'm not gonna just go out and buy a rat because I saw a UA-cam video. Don't automatically assume about people you've never met, but I appreciate the advice and care for the well being of any rat I may or may not get.

      Trance queen Some people like to get a bonding pouch. It allows you to carry the rat(s) around with you easily while you go about your day, and the rats feel safe in it, so they start to associate your scent and presence with safety.
      Handing out treats is good, too! If they won't take treats directly from you yet, just keep offering and set any they don't take in the cage for them to try later.

      @abbyroeser1246  9 років тому +51

      +Trance queen The best way to tame them in my opinion is by feeding them all the time from you hand. Let them run free in small area at first such as a bathroom. Offer them lots of treats, talk to them, and let them come to you instead of approaching them. Add a piece of worn clothing to their cage each night so they associate the smell with security. Put their cage in a central location where they will constantly see and hear humans.
      Good Luck!

    Gosh. I love them. I don’t have any right now. And I miss them. But I needed a break from the heartbreak of getting deeply attached and having to say goodbye so soon. Even though my healthy rats lived long ratty lives, it was still way too short for my heart.

      +RouRou You clearly don't know how to care for your rats or didn't socialize them properly. Let me guess you got them from a pet shop like Petco or Petsmart am I right? Pet shop rats need a lot of work to socialize them as well as have them be comfortable enough to be handled. True some of your information is correct but you put it out there way too negatively. From what you did post it sounds like you don't know how to properly care for rats. I've have a number of rats for the past 3 years now and I currently have 4 now. They are properly socialized as well as deeply bonded to me and they don't chew holes in my sheets, bed, pillows, or blankets. They don't pee on my bed either when I let them out unless I have them out too long and they can't hold it. I've only had a few accidents like that outside the cage but overall they are sweeties. Out of my total 11 rats I've had 7 females and 4 Neutered males and I've only had 2 girls have tumors. Vet bills can be expensive but if you properly care for your rats they may never have to go to the vet. Please be a little more tactful and positive when you make long negative comments like this. Yes you've had a bad experience with rats but I think that's more on your end rather than the animals.

    I think there is a rational explanation behind this. If the rats have been cared for since birth, then it would make sense that the owner is seen by the rats as it's mother. Another explanation for their high intelligence would be their diet. It's obvious that these rats aren't eating garbage scraps. I saw she was feeding them noodles. Noodles is part of the grain family. Most grain foods are mainly considered as brain foods. You'd be quite surprised how a change of diet can dramatically increase the intelligence of an animal's brain. Very awesome video.

    • @abbyroeser1246
      @abbyroeser1246  9 років тому +65

      +IntoTheMindlessAbyss Pepper was one of my first rats and I bought her as an adult from a pet store (not recommended). She was terrified of humans and would bite and freeze when I approached her cage. It only takes a bit of time and patience to socialize them. The others were adopted as babies, but also required socialization. Intelligence is a tricky thing to quantify because animals can be intelligent in different ways, but wild rats are just as intelligent as their domestic relatives.

    • @abbyroeser1246
      @abbyroeser1246  9 років тому +46

      +Athenathe SheWolf Its fairly easy. I use a method called behavior shaping. At first I present the rat with the object and if she sniffs it, she hears a click (I cluck my tongue) and receives a treat. Then in order to get a treat she must grab the object, then pick it up etc. Pepper soon learned then any time I presented her with and object, I wanted her to carry it to a specific place.

      +Sally May I definitely recommend a rat. Very intelligent and affectionate, just one thing to mention; please get at least two rats. They are pack animals and benefit greatly from at least one rat friend. Unless you can spend almost all day with your rat, it could go insane from lack of companionship.
      For instance, my sister's boyfriend gave my younger brother a rat his sister didn't want anymore. His name was Justin, he was about a year old. His entire life was spent alone in a ten gallon aquarium. No wheels, no toys, no other rats. He was quickly passed on to me, the 'rat mom' of the family because nobody could hold him without him freaking out. His life alone had caused him to go insane. He was too depressed to clean himself, too bored to do anything but sleep. He was fat and unhealthy.
      He didn't live very long after I got him, his life of solitude had a permanent effect on his health. I was able to rehabilitate him to the point where he would accept being petted, so he didn't die as alone as he used to be, but it still breaks my heart to this day.

    OMG this is amazing! I adore rats and have had five in my life. I never tried to train them this way though. I wish I had! It must take a LOT of patience. My last two rats were so busy, they never really settled down enough to enjoy true cuddling, and though playful they didn’t roll on their bellies to play. I don’t have rats now, but I’m sure I will again someday, and then maybe I can work with them like this. I’m sure they absolutely love it! They are so intelligent, it must be really satisfying for them to have something to learn and practice.

Did you give them them perssion to use it? They surely not credited you in thier version of this footage. If they not had your consent you can get them under copyright law. They seem to have history of not repecting international law. To find it look for 'HuffPost Arabi' (under mice) on Facebook or send me a message to my UT accout and I will send you the link.
