His nephew, Rahat, comes nowhere close.

So many genius sargams he has ruined entirely with an out-of-place "taan" which was more like a shriek of a wailing banshee. It is unfortunate that he has taken over the group since. And the thing that made Nusrat great was his fusion of qawwali with its older root (khayal), not the western fusion which he was forced his hand into. You can tell Nusrat was in his element at darbars. You can tell Rahat is in his element in Bollywood LOL. Also, Nusrat was from a time when explicitly Hindu references in Sufi music were accepted in Pakistan still, like calling Ganj Shakar "man ka mandir ka devta" or "tu mera shyam" etc. In Desi languages, this rootsiness can only come from Hindu metaphors, not some Farsi or Arabic stuff nobody understands from their hearts. But thanks to Islamization and the real threat of bombs and assassination, qawwali is turning sterile.
