It's a poetic symbolism and exaggeration to show his level of devotion, not that he was not a devoted Muslim. Complete devotion is a recurrent theme in Sufi "Tariqat", in all 12 houses of tariqat, especially the four great sufi houses of Sub-continent..

I don’t know where to begin to make a humble comment on a masterpiece of a song. I grew up in India, living in the U.S. and forever I listened to rock and hard rock music. And then came this amazing gift to me. Came at a very dark time in my life and opened my eyes to what matters - giving everything away and embracing the master with nothing but devotion. The poem is a gem and the song rendering by these great artists elevates this gem to a level where it touches and changes your soul. I don’t know where to begin to make a humble comment on a masterpiece of a song. I grew up in India, living in the U.S. and forever I listened to rock and hard rock music. And then came this amazing gift to me. Came at a very dark time in my life and opened my eyes to what matters - giving everything away and embracing the master with nothing but devotion. The poem is a gem and the song rendering by these great artists elevates this gem to a level where it touches and changes your soul. I need not do anything but soak in the music into my innermost being.
