This is the 1st video I've seen where someone actually showed what it takes to burn through. You almost have to intentionally burn the paint. Love this example, great video!!
That was exactly the point! Thanks
It gets dangerous with a rotary
i agree. thank you for your amazing content, i’m learning so much!
You just cured most fears I have of burning paint. Thanks!
Dan LeVasseur keep in mind plastic bumpers and mirrors will melt long before that. Be extra careful in plastic.
Colorado Auto Detail Professional Mobile Detailing I’m sure, but what I mean is I always assumed a nano second too long was going to burn through lol. Glad to see it in action
Just remember every car is different, here in Australia the Toyota hiluxs are very thin and would have burnt through at 10seconds
Goes out and burns and edge.
Anyone that holds a rotary that long in one place is an idiot. Show them how quick they can burn and edge. Not meaning you..
Your right edges will go quicker and you would have to be an idiot to hold the machine there that long - which was the point
very good video idea i have not seen paint being burnt yet. def important to see hands on!
I have done rotary work but only with a drill,so far, that sold me! Awesome video! Took the scaredy cat outside!
I bought a Makita 9237CX3 7 Polisher and heard it’s hard to use. I am a beginner and have a car with many angles 2015 impala should I be worried
Great video Jimbo! Always wondered what it would take! Makes my fear of a rotary much less now!
That doesnt look like burnt paint to me.... it looks like u burnt the fibers of the pad! Im not an expert by any means but never have i burnt clear to a point it discolored my pad. I know this was an extreme test but it would have been more realistic if you kept applying compound to keep the pad lubricated and really see what burnt clear looks like. Alot of fears from burning clear are from more powerful rotaries like the dewalt you mentioned and a 7 or 8 inch Twisted wool pad. Those are way more aggressive and you can burn clear ALOT faster than with the setup you used. Great video but should be titled how to burn a wool pad lol JK keep up the good work 💪🏽
Haha. Your right. The fibers are also burnt.
Who was here just to see paint destruction? 🤚
You mostly burn paint with a rotary not so much a da great video buddy tfs
Hes using a rotary though...

It’s easier to burn a freshly-painted panel rather than an older panel.
Wow! Harder to burn through the clear than I thought. Great video!
Great to see how much it's really needs. But also to be fair the most oops happens on the areas you talked about is to be carefull with when you correcting with a rotary polisher or actually some times with a DA too. On the edges that is where the paint is it's thinnest and also kind of grab you in if you are not carefull. Also how you tilt and let the pad with a rotary polisher goes against the edge. Then have the pad also with compound on it all the time is more aggressive. Needs to be reloaded with compound often though LOL. It could be worth to show how many compounding with full section passes it takes on edges or raised body lines before you have thinned out the paint too much. Also that without a paint thickness gauge reading before you starting to be doing a heavy compounding step on it is of value. As you often have no idea on how the paint has been polished before you do it. And the paint can be very thin when you starting to do the correction. Or more thicker and it's needs to be very aggressive as in your video to do any damage on the paint.
I see what you where trying to show and you told many things that you takes into account when you polishing with a rotary polisher. And for most parts it's very safe to use. It's when you get those paints that are already thin from the beginning it's a very high risk of going through. Or a spot correction of a scratch that have been done and you have thinner parts on otherwise good amount of paint on it. Where you really can get into problems. Very informative video for sure and would be very interesting to see more of these videos where you when detailing can get into trouble with on some materials. What happens when you let chemicals dry on the paint for an example. Or use a tar remover on headlights and dwelling too long. Not drying a paint when rinsed with tap water and so on. Many things that would be interesting to see what happens and why and how you avoid these things to happens in the first place LOL.
Great video and the rotary polisher seems to be a great first rotary to get.
All great points!
the m100 looks the same as plastx
I say thats some pretty stout paint and might not be the best example. I burned through a bumper once with a DA. The sun was reflecting off a mirror or window of my truck in the driveway and right onto a 3" spot on the bumper that I was doing sone heavy corection on. The clear just started to get hazy and blister when I saw what was happening. The bumper had been repainted so maybe the clear was thin too.
Great video! So many are scared of burning paint, which is why they stick to washing cars. Paint correction is a different ball game. This is one of the reasons they created the DA, yet many are still terrified
do one with how long it takes to wetsand through clearcoat with either 1500 or 2000grit on factory clear!
Go ahead and do it and you will go threw the clear guarantee it unless you are a professional it takes years of experience trust me
@@clawmachinetime955 i've wetsanded paint for 5yrs now, never went threw the clear, but i always stop when orange peel is gone and panel is completely matte flat

Such a great video jimbo.
Amazing video. I was asking myself the same question just this week.
Try and ceramic coat it, and do a comparicens. Some coatings promise +800c heat resistance.
Excellent video - So very, very useful, helpful, detailed & enlightening.
I appreciate the time and the trouble you took to shoot this. ( You're a Star ! )
Many thanks.....all the way from London !
Thanks for watching.
people say "look out, you can burn the paint". they really think it’s going to catch fire. in this video we see that it really is not as simple as it seems to burn the paint. maybe I should climb on top of the machine ...my weight would help
My favorite Jimbo vid ever. So glad that u did this. So many detailers utubers trying to scare u with the bs that if u r gonna use a rotary u need more experience than a brain surgeon; or u r gonna burn the paint. Thank u for exposing all the tricksters and liars. That’s why I always watch your vids.
Last year when I polished my cars for the first time, I had no problems at all. It was my first time using a polisher and they came out 95% perfect. Some naysayers told me the big lie:”don’t do it, u r gonna burn the paint”. Someone has to be the dumbest person to burn the paint imo.
Themachine they’re fake ass internet detailers that never held a rotary 😂😂😂
probally ur best video yet.thanks again Jimbo...
Wow - thanks!
Thank you
This was the first time I have seen a video on how to burn paint. Great idea!
Why do I feel like this panel had some MAJOR thick paint on it and that they don't make cars like they used to anymore? 🤣 Way to keep with the topic when the panel and rotary weren't responding as fast as you probably hoped. I learned something new in your video and love your channel! Keep it up! You inspire me and help me grow better as a detailer with every video. Thanks Jimbo!
Ya your right. It seemed to be pretty dang hard to get through.
So you can make multiple passes as long as it doesn’t heat up too much but if you even do one pass where it heats up to much it can burn through?
I truly appreciate your video! I really wouldn't call the Maxshine rotary polisher a beginner polisher! Pretty tough paint! Lol! Especially in max speed? I was cringing! I would actually call it a professional polishe! Because it's seems to be quieter And yes a dewalt rotary even the dreaded harbor freight polisher and grinder combinations can get pretty harsh! Especially with the 7.5" backing pad and a 8" 3M wool compound pad can really trash a paint correction on the highest speed! Loud and Duck! Just start off on the Lowest speed and relax if it starts to skip tilt it! About 10°
Is it actually burn from the heat or just cutting through the clear coat with the pad and compound? I've seen another video where they measured the heat as they went and the cooler DA went through the clearcoat faster than the rotary. The rotary part was hotter, but still took longer to get through the paint. They also ran a forced action which got up to 105F but the DA never got over 80F.. and still went through the paint
ua-cam.com/video/Vyz6P9XeYrw/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TheRagCompany
Great video, but it was hard to watch without constantly saying to myself, "no ... no ... no!"
Even harder to film. Haha
This was so helpful I am speechless.
I wish you had shown the foam pad more during the testing.
well if its this difficult to burn paint.... whats the point of a DA?
burning paint with a rotary polisher seems pretty hard unless
you are deliberately trying to do so
The fastest way to burn the paint ( Don't do that) is by rotating the pad in angle just a few degrees.
i love your videos and work and i really love the way you simplify and explain stuff! i really learned a lot from you, thanks! and keep it up ;)
Thank you

It really was - ugh man that’s a bummer. Random situations like that will def happen unfortunately
This was funny to watch. U should have gotten a Honda panel.
Jumbo what is the best rotary u think?
Ehh kinda depends on what your looking for in a machine
sorry a fucked up ur name JIMBO
Frankly, you really have to fall asleep on the polisher to burn the clear coat! 😉, I think it was faster than that to burn! On the other hand an extra cutting pads like a lake country HDO blue where buff & shine Uro-Tec blue where rupes coarse blue , with meguiar's M100, 105,110, should burn faster no?
Question aside, you already test the foam cannon brand PRO-KLEEN SNOWPRO? If so, when do you think!.
Very good review, thank you 👍
I don’t think I have?
Thank you this is what I've been telling people to want to try themselves but are afraid of this although there are more easy ways to mess up as having a dirty pad
Hey Jimbo !
Wicked video as always
Should I be afraid of ruining paint work while polishing with Scholl S20 in full sun on hot summer day at around 80 using Scholl navy spider pads and da polisher please ?
P.S.
Have done one step on 2 cars so far,
but it is still cool where I am about 60 so it was safe
Not with a DA. S20 is one of my all time favorites
@@autodetailingpodcast Thank you very much Kind Sir
Great video! Could you do a follow up showing how to cut and finish with a rotary?
Wondering how many microns this test panel had
For a sec I thought your gonna burn the Porsches paint 😳😰
Some one was is toasting bread in the office at the same time im watching this video.. jimbo keeps saying can you smell that.. and Im sitting here.. yes I Can it smells like toast XD
LOL
Old school wool pad would burn through in 20 seconds
@9:55 you mentioned that you wouldn't recommend a microfiber pad. Can you explain why? Thanks!
MF is too aggresive for a Rotary. Actually, I don't think I've seen a MF pad for rotary, wool is used instead.
@@tpddetailscr oh good info thanks! what about for a DA? Is the MF a better option than wool?
Yes, MF is great on DA's! I used that most of the time.
@@tpddetailscr thanks I appreciate it!
Who’s here cuz they burnt there paint with there tires
Why can we just polish at lowest speed?
I loved this video! I wish you would have measured the paint depth first to see how much clear was available to begin with. Also was the paint hard/medium/ or soft? thanks again!
brent horton good idea. Maybe on the next one
I always equated rotaries with burn marks and never even wanted to try it because of that. This really clears up that misconception and will seriously consider trying one out!
Thanks, Jimbo
Glad to help!
That’s on steel/aluminum. But what about plastic. Mercedes Benz plastic!
It will go faster so you have to take more caution
I’m impressed with this machine. I’ve been real hesitant about stepping up to a Rotary. I have burnt paint, so the most aggressive machine I have is a Forced Action.
When a dude says “poo” three times in one sentence you know he has young kids. And no man, I can’t smell it over here 😂
Not a false statement. 😂
Great video! I got a junk panel just to burn through the paint when I got into corrections a while back so I knew what not to do. Would have been easier oof you just put this out a few years ago 😂
😆
Jimbo I’m starting to get into paint correction what type of machine do you recommend me to start and what products would be good to start with? Thanks
Efren Aguilera definitely with a DA polisher and something like 3d ONE compound. Get a scrap panel like this one and practice
Thanks jimbo great content you are delivering every time.
The paint is smoking 😂😂
Feel The Bern 😂
I'm a fan and I don't want this to come off too negative, but I could see how this vid might give people a false sense of security. The phrase "burning through the paint" is often misused (similar to the waxing/polishing confusion). Yes, this accurately showed how long it might take to burn paint. But you can break through the clear coat with much less time and heat even with a DA in many scenarios. Burning isn't the only way to go through a clear coat. Thin paint is the real danger and it can be worn through without any of these warning signs. I don't mean to criticize because it was definitely a helpful vid. I just don't want someone to assume their paint can handle this kind of abuse and end up with a huge wake up call! Keep up the great content Jim.
I think that is super useful. It’s really hard to cover all angles of paint burning in one video so this was helpful and I may try to expand this series.
Burn trough mazda paint today. Rupes 75e with MF cutting pad from Meguiars with 105 compound. 3th cut on the same place trying to chase a deeper scratch.. Maybe 3-4sec on the same place and boom.. big burn trough 😩
Bring in the rotary
Based off the thumbnail you eat spicy Indian food lol jk
Good stuff man!
LOL - I’ll take spicy Mexican over Indian tho
Auto Detailing Podcast as long as it’s a hole in the wall place and they literally speak no English, those are the best!
Ty for this. Will be using a rotary for the first time and as my first time claybar/compound/polish/sealant and this made me a lot less worried. Just gotta care for edges!
Great video but doesn't this apply more so to vehicles that have been repainted, thus having more clear coat to play with. Im assuming it's much easier to burn through paint on factory finishes.
Hi Jimbo can you please do a comparison video seal and shine vs a entry level ceramic coating there’s a good one by technicians choice ceramic coating for $39.00 and another good entry level coating by P&S for $79-99 dollars. Also I would like to see a review on Poorboys World Natty’s paste wax. The red variant. Thank you very much.
Here after doing something similar to my truck, it's just so weird to me because I didn't leave my polisher in the same spot por a long time but yet again it was a side panel
I dont have a garage to use a machine in doors. Would you recommend using a machine out doors in direct sun light? I polish and wax cars in direct sun light by hand and as long as I dont wait to long to remove it, especially the polish, I really dont have a problem. But I'm not so sure about whether using a machine out doors is wise.
Hey I have a question.. when you tempted to burn the paint the first time When it just lightly caused the light burn scuffs, would that be able to be polished out or buffed out if it didn’t go all the way threw? I was asking because I have a slight spot on my vehicle that looks like that and I’m wondering if it can be polished or buffed out? It looks to me it hasn’t damaged the clear coat but that’s why I’m asking more advanced folks that know.
you should have also tried a painted plastic surface!!
Bryan Basile good idea. Maybe in a following video
Yes, do it! 😊
That video will be a lot shorter though.
Hey I unfortunately sanded through my clear and base coat. Now the primer shows..is there anything I can do to fix it?
I was prepping the paint before I did the polish and I used 1200 and 500 grit since the scratches were too deep..
That tape was bugging me. Lol. Better off with out it. But great explanation of burning paint. Never seen it.
Thank you Mr Jimbo
Is that an actual a rotary or a forced rotation polisher. My be the pad but it looks like I see some wobble from the pad. There is a difference between the two polishers
How "dangerous" is using a right angle grinder as a buffer/polisher?
Thank you for doing the video. Now we do low speed buffing that is no higher than 12 to 1400 RPM. You still have to be cautious with the rotary and it does take a lot of experience not to put in hologram swirl marks and burn the paint. But if you use a paint thickness gauge within 30 seconds of holding the rotary in one spot you have sanded or is people say polish the clear coat to a non usable State meaning too thin. sure you didn't burn all the way down to the base coat but the clear has been so damaged that it will deteriorate so fast within the next year and peel off. I've seen many cases where it looks like there is still clear but actually it is the base coat that is getting shiny that makes it look like clear but it is not. It is the base coat getting shiny which leads to a false sense of security. Also on the same note is people think cutting is finishing out the paint after cutting you have to finish with a finishing polish to take out holograms, swirl marks and any other defects that might be in there put in with the rotary this is what's not tight now and I wish will be taught again the rotary is such a valuable tool again thank you for your video
do one of these videos with a DA polisher. great video been waiting for this
You can't burn with a DA.
@@washingtonfootballfanwgil8392 y cant u burn the paint bro .. 🤔🤔😎😎
Hahaha all these online detailers talk about rotaries burning paint yet never held a rotary buffer 😂
Joe
Great video. I always wondered what it would take to actually burn the paint. Thanks!
What would be temperature of clear coat or paint before burning?
I was hand polishing black piant and noticed it had black on a medium size applicater pad and was confused. Am I faster than a DA polisher?
Might have just applied to much pressure
oh shit am i early?
If early is on time!
how many microns of product is on the panel
Can you at least move the tape so you don’t burn that?
thank you for sharing this video man, now I have the balls to use my DA polisher without fear or any doubts that I might damage the paint, you just showed us how safe to use our DA polisher.. thank you very much, I love it man..
You should now have the balls to set the DA on the shelf and use the rotary more. With the time you can save with the rotary you may never get around to seeing those new found balls turn into dried up peas.
Poo is the best compound for paint defects!!! 💪💪💪
waste of time
houseofsgp at least he can find his ass with both hands
So when does anyone actually need to switch to a rotary vs DA and did you burn paint or the clear coat?
Clearcoat is paint. Rotary polishers are a staple in the body shop business. Why? Because insurance companies cap what they will pay shops per hour therefore the faster you get it done the better. Same for some detailers. Doing the first step of a two or three step correction with a rotary will get you done faster which means you make more per hour. And instead of only being able to get 2 cars done per day maybe you could get 3 or for done. The bottom line is profitability.
@@scottschulte1157 thanks for the valuable info 👍👍👍
Awesome video
video starts @ 03:47
Great topic.
Do you think a cordless drill with those plate and foam adapter kits are strong enough to burn the paint, or do you think I shouldn’t worry as much because the cordless drill prob doesn’t have the same power as a rotary?
I think a cordless rotary can definitely burn paint
@@autodetailingpodcast well yeah but a cordless battery powered drill prob doesn’t have the same power as a professional rotary. I’m just wondering if my d.i.y Ryobi drill actually has the rpms’s and torque to burn. Thanks
Ya it will burn
@@autodetailingpodcast thanks
@@autodetailingpodcast I’m going to do it all by hand when I get a break in the weather. Picked up that new turtle wax one & done.
How do you fix burnt paint?
Re paint
Using a da or rotary should be left to professionals I have seen many in and out detail shops and people who think they can do it ruin the car's paint
Question. I’ve seen lots of videos regarding polishing paint and removing paint imperfections (plus this unique how to burn paint video), but when would you recommend NOT polishing paint?
I ask because I’m trying to jump from ‘Prosumer’ to ‘Pro’ and practiced on my tunnel wash thrashed Corolla hood and the paint actually looks worse! Super hazy and dull. I’m guessing the clear was too far gone and polishing just finished it off.. Anyway, appreciate any insight.
PS. Your podcast on jumping from prosumer to pro, was a HUGE motivation! Thanks, Jimbo

Already like the chan just because your showing this thank you
Paint thickness measurement would have been nice
good point.
@@autodetailingpodcast I enjoyed the video though can you do one where you measure the paint thickness and see how many light polishing passes you can make before damaging clear coat
