    The cognitive dissonance that happens when I ask this question is wild cuz I know that if someone asked me if they were a bad person, I'd say "well, it's not that simple, good and bad aren't absolutes and we're all a bit of both, etc." but because of my OCD, when I ask myself that, it's always "Oh I'm a terrible person and I need to make sure others are protected from me." Thank you for helping me acknowledge this and for not reassuring me and feeding my OCD more.

    Wow! This video made me cry. I have always knew I had anxiety but sometimes lately it’s been severe thoughts that I’ve made a terrible mistake and I’m a terrible person, based off of something I did that is a little out of character, but nothing bad happened, but I think of how it could have or might have and I just don’t know yet. It’s so severe that I sweat and feel sick. It’s definitely obsessive. Maybe it’s OCD. My friend told me it could be, that’s how I found this channel.

    you know nate, the more I list down all my intrusive thoughts, the more I get confident? Suddenly I realize that I have way more control in the present moment and I am actually the boss of my behavior in the present moment 😃
    This is life changing, thank you from Indonesia👍🏻

    The timing of this video lol. I was struggling last night with my ocd trying to label me as a bad person. I work retail and my store is closing so the customers are well..not the greatest lol and I've been getting super frustrated and letting it be known and I felt I wasn't the nicest to the customers. Well after work my ocd tried plaguing me with the fact that "I'm a bad person", "there's no coming back from this", "I should quit retail", and so on. But I used some tools I have about rumination and realizing that directing attention towards it is like mentally holding on to something. So I did my best to let it go and know that I will be exposed to it again. ❤

      I so want to give you a reassurance, but know that isn't the best (but truly you sound so obviously kind that it was easy to just go there, instantly) so instead, I'll be praying for you. Prayers you have a fully blessed 2024, that you continue to heal and find relief!

    • @the_beevsknees

      @@natalieerickson5519 thank you for not giving reassurance. Trust me, there's a part of me that wants to so I can "feel Better" all those with ocd know that it just keeps the cycle going. Thank you for your prayers. There is strength in prayer, so I have no doubt it will help!

    • @natalieerickson5519
      @natalieerickson5519 4 місяці тому +4

      @the_beevsknees amen, there is all the strength that we need in God and prayer! And also, instead of reassurance in any classical form I will simply testify: I have been delivered from my OCD to the most humanly possible point. This time last year I was at my very, very worst. I kept doing the work and it's 'gone'. My symptoms that plagued me all my life are laughable now. If it can happen for me it can 100% happen for you. You're doing great! I'm so excited for you and your impending remission!
      We'll always have OCD but when in remission we get to keep all the best and are relieved from the rest. There's a lot of beauty in the way God made our brains but this is how I liken it, being an autistic female with OCD:
      I was raised around cars but didn't know I was a jet....that can be a really awkward way to live your life (being a jet on city streets, being a jet on the freeway, constantly feeling wrong). Once I learned how to operate my vehicle rather than trying to operate like theirs I took off.

  • @sympathism
    @sympathism 4 місяці тому +14

    Its so difficult Nathan because OCD related to self image feels like having two separate beliefs or viewpoints, a positive and a negative one, and I am somehow unconvinced that the 'positive one' is the one I can comfortably settle for.
    Theres doubt. I think 'Both could technically be true'. And to literally not be able to feel certain about the good nature of your own character, like many other people can, is the toughest aspect of OCD for me.
    I would appreciate any tips on this if possible. Have a great evening!

    I am really struggling with ocd for the past few months, I have got an official diagnosis from a psychiatrist but there aren't any good therapists around me here in India who could help me with Exposure and Response prevention, I would purchase your course if it wasn't so costly, especially cause of the currency exchange rates...
    With that said, I really wanna thank you for your videos, if it weren't for your videos my symptoms would've gotten uncontrollable and thanks to you I have been trying to do ERP myself, my symptoms are pretty bad 40-50 percent of the day now, in comparison to September October when they were unbearable literally all the time... I can never thank you enough for all you do for those of us who suffer from OCD

    Wow, this was so eye-opening to hear, and as I listened it made me realize intrusive thoughts are a lot like those internet trolls who comment nasty things to get a rise out of everyone. The only thing you get out of arguing or trying to reason with them is stress, giving exactly the reactions they're looking for. This is such an excellent channel, and I'm glad I've found this right when the frequency of my intrusive thoughts have increased. Great video!

  • @Hythenos

    As someone who dealt with this for 5 years (real event) and recently was finally able to move forward, the best thing I worked on with my therapist was self compassion, that sharing my struggle with my support system, and realizing that there are good and bad actions but people are complex beings made up of many decisions. This really helped. You are not your thoughts, your past actions might be fixed points in time but you are an ever changing person capable of growth and you should be more forgiving of yourself. Trick your OCD, if you learn how to stop fighting yourself you can learn how to move forward.

    OCD to me is mostly about anxiety regarding X/Y/Z (whatever our Obsessions are all about). So if we have concerns about one thing or another, more or less, how many % do you think of people with OCD really actually have their fears come true? Many if not most of those fears are exaggerated, I know and probably people without OCD, whenever they fear something, they have more logical arguments to actually feel that way, right?

    • @SammynAlgeria
      @SammynAlgeria 4 місяці тому

      do you fear that thing because well you feel it by yourself by your own?
      or you feel it because of a thought that's trying to give me false proofs/alarms to convince you to fear it more?
      ocd can easily take our value away so what if if we play opposite and take IT'S value away and do nothing but don't give anxious giving thoughts value instead?
      this is the key for your question hope this helps! ^^

      @@Lordani66 oh sorry ima stop with the bard style okay uh lemme explain in detail
      OCD lives in our mind, which is normal because everybody have thoughts and instrutive thoughts ocd is more of an enhanced mechanic of thoughts except they're against us so they tend to try and create realistic images and make a compulsion to make us do it or else something bad happens we must build self esteem and lvl it up to the max to and stop caring and prioritizing about ideas or thoughts that tells us to do things that we don't want ask yourself this "do i want to do this?" if you don't know ask yourself again "would i be still okay if i don't do it later" if you still feel forced to do something that you don't want then it's mostly a compulsion
