- A rare afternoon bulletin (sorry for the wobble!) from Southern TV here including weather with Trevor the weather Baker. Note that disco theme music and how quickly the set changes for the weather!
I'd say there was more home video footage of BBC 1 South and Southern Television than from any other BBC or ITV station in Britain from the 1970's because of how wealthy the South of England was and still is, and they even mentioned it themselves in some programme at the time, so more people would be able to afford to buy video recorders in the early days
One of the first TV gigs for young Christine Webber who joined Anglia TV a year after this and stayed until the early 90s.
This has to be from early October 1977 ... Brighton footballer, Peter Ward was called into the England squad for the second meeting with Luxembourg that year, which took place in mid-October ... So this must have been from a week or so earlier when the squad was announced.
Vrillon trying to take over the signal?
that was the Brighton park where the two girls were found in 1986. Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows. RIP girls xx
Where’s youtubes’s tracking knob?
Sounds like Southern TV were listening to the Bay City Rollers song: "You made me believe in magic." I like that song and I thought the opening chords sounded familiar :)
it was on a continuity reel uploaded by a guy called Rory Clark some years ago.
needs a touch of horizontal hold son
@daanbrg Unfortunately I don't have the tape as I didn't capture the original footage.
Christine Webber was married to Hugo Myatt, who played Treguard on Knightmare. It was through Christine working with Knightmare creator Tim Child at Anglia Television where Hugo met Tim.
Ah sorry. Probably couldn't afford it, look at the state of the studio.. it even doubled as a weather centre! :)
When did they first start using the disco theme? It's unusually funky for such a stuffy twee middle class tv region like southern!!
Was this recorded on U-Matic, N1500, N1700, Betamax or some unusual video system back then?
were did you get that from???
That's Christine Webber reading the news, who later became a TV and magazine agony aunt (including 'TV Times' for a spell in the 90s). Gosh, wasn't she well-spoken in 1977? She sounds rather common now (search UA-cam for more recent clips of her and you'll see what I mean!).
It is no bad thing to sound common. It's when people slurp their soup and pick their nose and eat it that one needs to think twice before marrying it.
Christ the tracking on that old video recorder needs sorting out. As long as the tapes haven't been chewed up, as they were in some poor video recorders, the picture should be far better than this.
Video footage of what? Thats all I have Southern News wise.
With regret! I think it's going to end program Turning from the TV. Living father, young mother, small sister! It's sad ...
Color then black and white
Cor-few???
@putthetellyon1 I think Southern could afford it but they were renowned for being tight arses - one of the reasons why they lost their franchise.
