8:16 No, the novels were written mostly from Jin-Woo's POV so we rarely even got to see other things like that. Also there was no jumping between things, so if you did get some other POV, it would be an entire chapter, not just snippets.
Does this also apply to the webtoon? It's been a while but I feel like when I read it this also happened there but I'm wondering if that's just the anime screwing with my past perception.

About the animation, I think the director actually stated in an interview that as the series progresses they wanted to "level up" the quality as well. And now, its been confirmed that Tetsuya Takeuchi (the animator for Gaara vs Rock Lee, Yuji vs Choso) is gonna be working on Solo leveling in the future so you know its only gonna get even better
and it was leaked that theres a ton of guest animators coming for season 2 (or cour 2)

The cut away to the sister is intentional to give the idea of the passing of time in the real world. The Jeju island cut away is also intentional to make the parallel that while he's evolving the top brass are initiating the Jeju Island 3rd raid
We are aware of the reasons they did it. But they showed literally 2 other identical scenes of his sister making a sandwich and literally going to bed, we didn’t need a third. And as for the hunters leaving, we already got another scene or two of them getting ready to leave and boarding the helicopter. We didn’t need a 15 second cutaway in the middle of the most hype sequence in the entire show, just to see that they were indeed leaving.

@@BOLDcast bru it’s just to reserve “budget” for the fight. the wise and clear decision to keep the fight in a high quality. thought the dude would’ve picked that up since he’s decently aware with how productions work. Might’ve messed up with the pacing but it was well directed with those pacing choices.
@@8ooty0 with the people involved with this animation, and with the amount of effort they put into the cutaway scenes, budget was not the problem. As someone who is interested in the production, even I can tell you that much.
Budget is not always the issue and it’s not the issue in this case unless I’m poorly informed.
The issue in this case is a lack of creative directing choice to mitigate the issues people have with the source. They chose the most “play by numbers” approach to the problem, and impact of the work of the animators was forced to suffer due to solving a problem with a sub optimal solution.
I’m no expert, that’s just my opinion.

I mean yeah when I initially watch the show, I was kind of annoyed too by how it kept on cutting away from Jin-woo. But then I read the book and I got to tell ya all these conversations ended up being relevant later.

I believe that Igris was inspired by the Knight Artorias from Dark Souls (DLC) who was in turn inspired by Guts, so just one step removed!

Don't worry about the shadows, they're actually a huge part of the show and its identity. The story is still about Sung Jin Woo but the whole necromancy element just adds more flavour to the pot. And with this new added flavour, the show is gonna be different from what we've seen so far in these 12 episodes (which is why alot people called it the "prologue" or said "this is where the real Solo leveling begins" or some other corny stuff like that). Either way, now that you guys know what to expect from this show, I think you'll enjoy it going forward. Just remember that alot of the questions will only be answered much later in the story.
Yeah we definitely like these 2 eps a lot more. We didn’t even know these were the final eps of the season lol we were hyped to watch the next epsiode that week (this was recorded the week after the finale)

The scenes with the guilds that keep interrupting Jinwoos battle are actually very important because while this is happening the top guilds are preparing for another raid to Jeju Island and potentially their last attempt before the situation is deemed unsalvageable. While all hunters on this excursion are S-ranked, some have already been to Jeju Island and carry the trauma of failure as we see the guy (forgot his name; he's very ornamented) who is tortured by flashbacks. Among them we know that cha_hye_in the S-rank babe has not been to Jeju Island before. Soooo that's wassup
The bad cutaways in episode 11 were definitely a director issue. There were some ideas behind them but the execution fell flat, there was a reveal in there but they completely failed to convey that.
You missed the after credits scene
There’s an end credits scene you guys missed. Also you should check out the “arise” scene in the dub, personally I think they did it better
to the cutting away part, that is quite true to source material, argueably - an episode contains about 4-5 chapters, which almost always end on cliffhanger-ish scenes. and more often than not (at least by memory) the following chapter cuts away to another perspective or another sideplot before you continue where the previous chapter left off.
to add to that, I am talking webtoon
Have conflicted feelings on the cut in scenes. On one hand they absolutely disrupt the pacing on the other hand I'm glad we get to see some stuff from the side characters since they really don't get that in the manwha or novel even if it doesn't feel all that well done. Hopefully it pays off in season 2 and beyond.
I don't want to give you any spoilers so just onow that this shadow monarch ability will define the remaining story.....
it cuts to his sister and it shows you the clock so you can see that his "daily quest" penalty is getting closer.
it cuts to the headmaster or whatever and the s ranks to show you how the current prodigies and the future prodigy are doing. (that s also why the headmaster talk about it, to make you look at them as equals regardless of their ranks)
All the additional content that will help later I think has made people drop the show before it even gets to the crazy stuff all the manwha readers are talking about. I really find it hard to see what makes this show so good after this first season (besides the animation which is insanely good)

so i think one thing you missed to take into consideration while theory crafting is igris' level. you did point it was level 7, indicating there are levels to these shadows. and jinwoo pointed out there are ranks to them too. What i am trying to point out is these guys level up just like our MC. happy theorycrafting.

Honestly solo leveling wasn't your type of show tbh. Most of your criticism is perfectly valid. The main reason solo leveling became soo ridiculously popular was bcoz of its god-tier artwork of manhwa. If you have time, I recommad reading some of the initial chapters that anime covered(anime covered first 45 chapters). See how incredibly well drawn they were, you'll understand why it became soo popular. Anime has great animation but I still think Manhwa is superior simply bcoz of that artwork.
Well we’ll see. Hopefully the stuff we complained about won’t be as bad in season 2, because even as just a spectacle of animation, this show is worth watching. I wouldn’t have said that in the first half, but as the show went on, the style became more distinct, even if it’s not terribly unique it’s still beautiful.
So yeah I can see why it became popular for sure, I just wish they stuck to THAT aspect, rather than try to correct its apparent lack of character with a silly half-measure
@@BOLDcast honestly I recommand one of you guys to read the Manhwa ahead just for a new perspective for season 2. Like solo leveling is the most binged Manhwa of all time. Everyone who has read it, finished it in like a week max. It's that fun to read. Would be cool if one of you guys actually knows why the anime staff keep adding this stupid filler content. Though keep in mind, the final 70 or so chapters were incredibly rushed bcoz of the artist's poor health. He passed away after finishing solo. I'm glad though anime is adapting it from the novel, that wasn't rushed I think.

the whole cut aways during the fights with Jin-Woo are annyoing but heard that the added anime original scenes are gonna be pay off later on. I do hope in cour 2 they gonna place those back and forths scenes a little bit better.
If you are an adrenalin junky you fear the cut away. If you don't fear having your tension get a small calm down to get edged a bit more Solo Leveling is a nice experience. It is not interruptive as in a 5 to 10minute segment taking you fully out of the action. These are 30second to 2 min "releases" before you get of it goes again.

Your analysis is spot on with how I feel about the cutaways (also side note u missed the post-credits scene) .
Bcuz of the complains ppl had in the manhwa where the side characters didnt get enough love, the anime staff wanted to include them more, but the way they did it was so bad that it made me want to see them even less.
It disrupts the flow of the scene and shoves unrelated scenes that only make sense in hindsight later when u look back on it.
Very much agree with the fact that it seems they didnt have confidence in their viewers "clicking away" if the scenes were at the start of the episode or end of it as slight conclusions to some subplots or character introductions.
Hope they learn from the mistakes and make it better for next cour.

Honestly you will not be disappointed as to how he uses these new necromancer skills. Let him cook, season 2 is gonna be insane. But my fav is Igris, his fight and his arise scene coz goddamn it was beautifully adapted

Carson, I personally definitely agree with your take on the cutaways. Of this adaptation, I’d say that is the ONE thing that needs improvement for sure. As for everyone else, yes, I know that some people aren’t bothered by the cutaways. The thing that I agree with Carson with is the fact that the tiny scenes can be placed at later parts of an episode and it wouldn’t negatively impact the episode whatsoever. It would, in fact, have just made things even better than they already were. It didn’t have to be mid-fight, especially if it ISN’T for a scene that is important but can be used to reduced a climax.
The fight could have been finished from beginning to end, and then to de-escalate the climactic conclusion, you then add those scenes afterwards. It’s one thing to do cliffhangers, to get someone to stay tuned and hyped for the next episode; it’s another to distastefully interrupt those hype scenes that they waited an entire week for.
As someone else stated in the comments, the constant cutaways sounds almost like the studio isn’t confident in the side character’s ability to carry their own scenes individually and need to be shoved in almost as a last ditch “pls-don’t-forget-these-characters” reminder. I personally was slightly bothered by the constant cutaways, but it didn’t overall make me super annoyed. However, because i was slightly annoyed, I am 1000% able to see why others can be greatly annoyed by it.
Long story short, It could have been placed after the fight; it didn’t need to interrupt the main scene. One of the few cutaways I DID like was the one where the chairman was making that awesome monologue as Igris was being resurrected. That was freaking epic. That is an example of a cutaway done right. It was necessary and related to the main scene at hand. It also helped to hype up Jin-Woo’s potential impact on the world moving forward.

It feels like the cuts were made because they wanted to fast forward the fight with a cut in between to signify time has passed. Unfortunately that also cut the pacing and tension too. Would rather they just do a flashforward cut without anything in between.

The animators did an excellent job, but because the directors of the anime didn't understand that this series is just a spectacle they added a lot of "filler".
It was only in these final episodes that the anime got the opportunity to excel at what it does best: amazing fights.
Some animes just don't need deep narratives, sometimes a good show only need good pacing.
The way the necromancer choice was being portrayed, I really thought it was going to show some kind of twist on leveling up. “Curse, not a blessing” type deal. But it just was a straight up power up (at least so far) and I was kinda disappointed. The way they were timing the scene swaps in ep 11 made me think that the dungeon was going to “turn him evil” or have him actually fighting the other higher rank hunters (a la Ender’s Game).
The directing made my expectations higher than what actually happened I think. Ah well

Jinho's dinner and the entire plot line of them doing a reconnaissance mission are anime-only. None of that stuff happens in the Manwha. I saw someone saying that Solo leveling (the manwha atleast) is Sung Jin Woo's autobiography. The spotlight rarely leaves him. But obviously there are complaints about side characters feeling irrelevant and I get that the anime trying to "fix" it but damn could they do it in a better way instead of these random disruptive cuts.
As someone who has read both the original light novel and the manhwa I gotta agree, the cuts in the most pivotal part of the first season are incredibly bad. The whole momentum gets killed in what's supposed to be an incredibly tense moment. I think I understand the reasoning behind it, they want to set up all the future events for season 2 but I feel like it would be better to save it for the last bit of episode 12 or maybe even as episode 1 of the 2nd season. It turns this hype, fast paced moment into a massive edging session where we get those irrelevant cuts.
One of the things I loved about the mahwa was how constant and flowing the action was, no bullshit or anything just straight gas until the end and then when the action finishes we get those slow world building parts rather than splicing them together in between the action which just makes it feel very disjointed. Very disappointing considering I absolutely adore the source material.

And yeah I know it doesn’t matter for everyone. For most people like yourself, it doesn’t Negatively impact the experience per se, since most people don’t notice it.
But I think, the same way people don’t notice quality cinematography or animation techniques (not just high frames but more intelligently thought out applications) and even though they don’t notice it, it still enhances the experience subconsciously, the same thing is true here.
Like I think most people didn’t notice or care as well, but imagine the world where the RIGHT choices were made (by our assessment) I think even the people like yourself would have enjoyed the show even more, and people who do notice stuff like us would have been less frustrated.

I agree that the sudden back and forth is killing the hype. When I was reading the Manhwa all the fights are continuous--makes you flip the pages super fast. I guess they're trying to broaden the world since the focus of the story in the Manwha is only in Jin woo. Nice idea but horrible execution imo. Not the fault of the anime its on the direction.
I agree with your complaints. I've read both the novel and the manhwa and I must say, the storyboarding has been quite poor in this adaptation. I get what they are trying to do, but I don't think they are doing a good job at it. It's like they are not very confident people would want to sit through all their anime original content (which on its own isn't bad at all) and so they arbitrarily chop it up into short parts and randomly insert it IN MIDDLE (???!!!!) OF fights and other important stuff. Like, do it before or after, stop ruining the momentum!

I would have to mention that you have to remember the audience. The audience are made of mostly idiots. They need reminders of what he is fighting for. As you can most likely remember most people were calling Sasuke emo. When he killed his brother. He had just found out that his village order his brother to kill his clan and parents, and plus allowed his brother to take the blame. After all that they called him emo. People are stupid and need constant reminders and are also not empathetic. So these shows have to throw constant reminders of things as the mass audience are not very bright and unempathetic.
Dude, seriously stop being so btchy about the cutaways, you are acting like a little kid. This is one of the few animes that keeps most of the fights on a single episode and has a low amount of cutaways. Also, this is an anime with a story, is not just senseless fighting. The story obviously matter.

I wish there was a middle ground. I get what they are trying to do, the Manhwa never focused on any side characters which was one of the biggest criticisms of solo leveling. Now anime actually wants to solve that criticism by adding anime original scenes and subplots but it's rather jarring. We never saw Jinho's brother in the Manhwa nor did we see Choi's girlfriend. These are subplots added by anime staff that will be further explored later. I wish they didn't cut away during the action though. Action is the biggest selling point of solo leveling. Don't ruin that. Hope they tone it down in s2.

If they want to show side characters more, then just showing them say the same things they said in other scenes again, without any connection the the main plot, that’s not an effective way to engage a new audience.
Everyone says the side characters meant basically nothing to the main story in the original, and that it was all about the MC. Well you’re not going to change that by interjecting the main selling point of the series (action) with a bunch of literal filler scenes in an attempt to characterize them. It doesn’t solve the root problem, but even worse it interferes with the aspect of the show that is very strong. So it’s literally a lose lose and shows a lack of faith in the actual beat of the story.

Like I said Choi's(red head hunter) girlfriend was never shown in the Manhwa, not Jinho's brother. These kinds of subplots can be turned into small mini arc later. That way they can actually make this whole side character thing work. Just hope they stop abrupting the action.
@@BOLDcastwell, the problem wasn't exactly that side characters didn't matter or didn't matter to the plot. That's what only people who in it for the fights say. Characters mattered and the plot heavily depends on it, however manhwa never bothered to actually show them as people and their goals and them outside of mc perspective (most of the time). We just got introduced and were told things about them. So, the point is all that might be clunky now (and forever, I'll be honest), but it's not a lose/lose and does improve later experience by a lot, especially plot wise.
I feel like if we had more episodes for the season, or more seasons available it would be a better watch. Since we'd be able to get the payoff much sooner.
