    It is such a under rated car. Not only is engine gone fuel injected with this generation, but it was on a new aluminum structure and handling that beat Porsche and braking that was unbelievable for the time. Even now it performs respectably. I like the clean design that was a separation from disco era C3 (well at least what C3 evolved to).

    Thanks for the respect, keeping the C4 in its context! For the 80s, this was a whole lot of car. Even today, with modification, they can be relevant.

      There are plenty of go fast parts for sure! And they are fun to drive, but you saw that already. There just is something about a car with similar specs to my mustang for about half the money!

      Not bad! Taking it easy on her I suppose? I got 21mpg once in my 2005 mustang driving 90% city. I drove it with silk gloves. I hypermiled. Amazing result though, usually I am sitting at 17 mpg city.

      I agree completely, picked up an 86 convertible last fall in mint shape for 8000, in Canada mind you but still a decent price for what you get, I love the car and its a blast to drive, decent power and it handles like its on rails, for all you guys thinking about getting a c4, you cant go wrong

    Man, those things were the bomb when I was a teen aching for my driver's license. It's great to see people keeping them running. Of course, gotta love the C3, too. :)

      +Tim Kreitz Adventures I am in love with the C3. Love the styling, especially the 69-72 models. I'd get a 72, put a big block in it with a 4 speed, sidepipes like the one I reviewed and call it a day.
      But, the C4 was a lot of fun to drive. I'd take a 89 so I can still have a digidash, but get the 6 speed manual and the higher horse L98. I'd also love a C4 ZR1, that LT5 makes all the right noises. And there just is something about an 80's looking car beating up stock C5's.

    Hey dudes! Great video! I drive a 1988 Corvette in Germany and in contrast to the USA it's a very rare and exotic sportscar in which you get the looks for shure. By the way, I saw the 240 km/h, which means about 150 mph on the digital speedometer driving it on the german Autobahn ;-) I love my Corvette and I'm looking forward to visit it's birthplace in Bowling Green, KY in september this year!

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 років тому +1

      +Klaus Wandelburg thanks! It was a blast to shoot! It would be great to have one of those in Germany. Put your foot down on the unlimited stretches of the Autobahn without having to worry about loosing your licence. There are some awesome roads here in the USA, but man... if you're caught you're toast!

    First time here...6.23, the look on his face (driver) is really worth a million bucks. His excitement just sold me on on of these Vettes. Also, I'm an older guy, just sold my '68 L79 convertible a few years back. People would ask, "how many miles per gallon does that get?" I thought they were joking, but, they weren't. I'd answer back...'I have no idea." You guys're right about that logic. You're in a Vette. I'm glad to see you younger guys gettin' into the older Vettes, keeping them alive. I put my earphones on so I could hear that motor and shifting! Thank you! Oh, and, I'm gonna get and '85 or so...'86? Hehe. I dunno...a C4. Soon.

    • @TheDutchTexan

      +SQ_TierHog I love reading comments like these! And yes, hoot to drive, even with the 4 speed. If you want to retain the 80's looks but have a 6 speed manual get the 89! It would be the year I want because digidash!

    • @SQTierHog
      @SQTierHog 6 років тому +1

      Sir, THE only Vette I've ever been in (and worked on) was my 4 spd. '68. I owned it for 22 years. So, I'm looking for the 80's Vette...oops...c4! I'm wanting a manual trans., because all my 'regular' (lol) cars are automatic. I haven't driven a 4 spd (never a 6!) in years. From watching vids (Thank you, guys!) and lookin' at pics, I do believe I want the 'Digidash', it reminds me of those days. There's sooo many switches and readouts! Thank you for the suggestion of the 6 spd. '89. I'll look for those. BUT...Ben shared a video about the anti-theft problem. Yikes. Oh, I've subbed. :)

    My dad had a C3 in the driveway when the C4 came out. I was embarrassed in school to have the C3. The C3's became a joke back in the day and completely noncompetitive towards the end of the run and the 1984 C4 was competing with Lamborghini and Ferrari. Of course I appreciate them now but the 80's was about Atari and Casio calculator watches and the C3 was something out of the 60's. I do think the C4 is an excellent buy. Great chassis and the sky's the limit on the upgrades.

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 років тому

      It also has something to do with the drive of people to want to own the newest version of something. Once a car is many models owner they are either forgotten or make their place in history. The C3 certainly did the latter!

    • @vl5150
      @vl5150 8 років тому +1

      I agree and that was the case for sure with the C3. It aged like a fine wine, but the smog era cars were more like vinegar at the time. The late C3's were compared to the earlier ones with higher HP #'s and chrome bumpers. It's a shame because McLellan introduced lots of technology in the late C3's that would reduce weight and would find it's way into the C4 like the composite rear spring, lighter weight bumpers, and aluminum diff housing.

    What an awesome review! I was that kid that had a Corvette in high school, I kid you not! It was a yellow 1986. After that I got another '86 for $1,000! All because it had a minor engine fire and the owner couldn't pop the hood. Sold that one about two years ago to fund a SUV, a H2 Hummer. Last Saturday my wife and I bought a mint red '92. Love those C4s!

    Everybody does a "Yahooo!!!" or similar when just going for a short ride in my '85. Everybody leaves my car smiling... wanting to buy one...
    ...and right, like the man said, even after 30 or so years, under 10K... like even around 5K or less... you get an instant hot rod... which was way ahead of it's time in it's day... but even today, the C4 is an Animal that wants to play... did 150 mph out of the box, from the dealer lot... a few simple mods and... forgeddaboudit!!!
    ...just look at the aces on these guys when they paste the pedal... that says it all...
    ...so, go to the junk yard, get some piece of crap that you got to spend a million dollars on fixing it up... or get a nice, well cared for C4, for around $5K, like I did... and spend your valuable time, having Fun... tearing up the road...

    C4 is my 3rd fav Vette, old Vette speaking. Numero Uno is of course the ‘63 split rear window-#2 is the C3-I always looked at the C4 as something of a hybrid of my #1and #2-the front clip has that sharkish look of the C3 while the massive glass rear hatch has a bit of the split window feel. I’m an owner of the ‘85 C4 now.

    DT, Great video, and man did it bring back the memories...Years ago, I had an '86 Corvette. Loved that car! Digital dash, funky 80s styling, TPI motor with all the bolt on mods I could find and great performance for the relatively few dollars I spent on it. I agree with your consensus, for the person looking for something cool and different to drive, an early C4 is the way to go. Fun to drive and WAY less than $10K for a decent example. Even for a later model '92-'96 with a LT1/six speed combo, the cost is pretty cheap.

Got my Red, Hot, Nice, Beautiful, freshly painted, Flame Red, Well cared for all original,stock, all GM AC Delco etc.,1985, 118K, (Seniors Owned)... Superb running... everything worked, except a few light bulbs, wrong alternator... $5K dollars... and I found others that weren't too bad or far from it for around the same price and less on Craigslist where I found mine... INSTANT HOT ROD... to all you junk find 60s, 70s, fixer upper muscle car guys, take note... not bad to restore an old '69 Chevelle, it's a proud and much needed service to automotive history, but man-o-man... C4 Corvette, Instant red hot performance that you would be hard to compete with, but you wouldn't have to do anything to the well purchased C4... 150 Mph right out of the box... just a tip... 33 Years Old! Zoom! Amazing Machines... Read some history, more reviews... hardly anything bad said about them... and the way they beat the snot out of all them euro trash machines of the era... it's a riot! Get a C4... you'll never regret it, and you'll probably never let it go... but goddam, you will let it GO!

    I love the looks of the 84 and 85 C4. I have heard it was modeled after the 50 Cal Bullet !! That may not be true... But if you look at the oh so clean and simple lines of the C4's, you can see the 50 cal bullet shape. I love it !! In 86, Corvette installed the stupid Alarm system complex crap and the DOT brake light stupid looking which really really hurt the clean bullet shaped lines of the car.. Even though the Stupid DOT light was small but putting it on the outside of the car on top was stupid looking !! Looks like an after thought !! Also.. Because of the 4+3 manual unreliable, the Auto was the version to get.. 84 and 85 autos are the ones to get, 85 being tops. Also... I like the stock wheels best on this car.. Not sure about the 84, but the 85 can hit 155mph !! For real !!

    That was my first new car. I loved it. It had incredible Street-Cred at the time. However, the brakes were atrocious. If you were racing someone through the canyons, you had to nurse them all through there. The "Doug Nash Tranny" Was great, but "Broom Stick in a Bucket" Sloppy. I won a $100 Bar-Bet once with it. I had stated that it could do: "The Ton" In (2) second gear. Took the (Motorcycle) guy out and let Him put it into second gear himself. I would start from there... What he Didn't know, was that I had just popped it into overdrive with the button on top of the "CLICK" shifter. Like these guys said: You never really ran it except on the FWY. Second gear would wind the car out to 6000 RPM or something stupid, before it would finally engage. The '85 CHEVY 350ci had nothing after 4600 or so RPM. This guy was squirming in his seat, thinking I would blow the car up!
    'Till it engaged... Bwhaaa! 105 MPH! We came back into the bar and I told the Bartender to pay-up$$$ He asked the guy, if the car really did it..?
    "Yeah, but he cheated somehow" LOL!

    Nice write up of an under-appreciated car. They are the cheapest they will ever be so if you've always wanted one now is the time. There is a HUGE jump between models though; I had a 88 and still have a 90 ZR-1 and 92 LT1. Even though they are all only 4 years apart as a whole they might as well be completely different generation cars. The 90's was truly when Performance was brought back to the Corvette and even though there are lots of cars out there faster, the smile on your face as 330+ ft of torque hits you at 3000 RPM in an L98 or LT1 car is unbeatable by most cars today. When you are on the street from stoplight to stop light I maintain there is no car more fun than one of these C4 Corvettes!

    • @TheDutchTexan
      @TheDutchTexan  8 років тому

      +Marc Lebryk I'd like to agree with that! I hope to drive a late C4 down the line and see the difference! I already had lots of fun with this early C4 though! More power and gears? Always a good thing!

    • @Arilius0
      @Arilius0 8 років тому

      +The Dutch Texan I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are. The Early C4s were known to have been choked from the factory and can easily hit 300hp with a Throttle body and exhaust (with most of the work in the exhaust). The LT1s pull very similarly to the L98 in terms of seat of the pants (when using the same rear gear obviously), but the LT1 just keeps pulling for a little longer which is thanks to the 5500rpm redline in place of the 4500 rpm redline.
      No engine mods, put a 4.10 gear in the back of a L98 or LT1 and you've easily got one of the most fun cars to drive around town.
