Its more than anemia. Vitamin C causes low absorption of iron. So, low C, crave Iron. Also, low vitamin D3, calcium, magnesium and Potassium also cause it. Many things can.

Kaolin /bentonite have high addictive properties. Once you get into it, it is hard to get out of it. Those who crave these smoked clay feel more happy and comfortable. Once you start craving it, you will never rest your mind until you put Some in your mouth. Some even say they feel like they are in heaven when they eat clay.

I'm pregnant with my third and I can't get enough, of clay, charcoal, diatomaceous earth and sonic ice.

Well, the processor is eating smoked kaolin/ bentonite herself, because that is part of her research. She can order more from South Africa, Ghana or Kenya through etsy, smoked them and eat. It is ok. All African countries eat them. I just pray she doesn't get addicted to it, because she is so beautiful and more than that.

I got a question and I can’t find no answers anywhere on the internet. Ever since I was a little kid up until I was 6-7 I had weird cravings of wood. I would naw on the corner of countertops, I would even go up to trees and tear their tree bark off and eat it. Yes I had iron deficient probably still do but I just wanna know was I just a weird kid or is there more to it

You aren't weird and many people have the same cravings. The dictionary calls it Pica, which is the practice of craving substances with little or no nutritional value. Most pregnancy and pica related cravings involve non-food substances such as dirt or chalk. The word pica is Latin for magpie which is a bird notorious for eating almost anything. The medical profession can be very disrespectful on some levels.

I have had a real salt craving since my childhood. I used to walk around with a handful of rock-salt in my pocket, and I would let each piece dissolve on my tongue until I put in a new bit. In addition, I always chewed ice when pregnant. Taking iron pills would help, but when I still wanted to chew ice after the pregnancy, my Dr. labeled me with pica. I would go daily to a specific store to get the "right" ice.

I crave earth, sand and sometimes cant resist swallowing tooth paste, i am not pregnant. I guess some minerals are missing from the diet or so, we went vegan almost 2 years ago, but this craving started just recently, maybe 2 months ago...

Wait I was confused about the ending. Did she say that eating clay and earth causes anemia or people with anemia crave these items?

Eating clay from the natural ground is unhealthy, but continues to eat KFC and BigMacs...? I think clay is healthier than a cholesterol filled big mac.. sorry.

@@lilyjr.1384 not eating as "food" but If you like the taste then you can eat it as a "snack" but not "food" and only edible chalk or clay can be eaten if you eat real chalk or clay it might hurt you becauseof the toxic in those chalk and clay, hopefully this helped😊 (this is my opinion this is what I believe so dont come at me😅)

      • I c h i k a • Snacks are food.
Technically natural chalk and clay would be the “real” thing.. and it is also highly capable of being a detriment to one’s health. Natural doesn’t equal healthy. This habit poses serious short term and long term health risks. They can be used as treatment for certain conditions- like hypocalcemia (low calcium in bloodstream) and pre metal poisoning, but will take a toll on a body without the conditions. Medicinally- it should only be a much smaller amount.
Eating clay may worsen iron deficiency and cause other deficiencies. Eating chalk may greatly stress the kidneys, heightening the risk of kidney disease; and hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the bloodstream). Both habits may result in an abraded enamel, constipation, oxidative damage (which heightens the risks of a world of numerous diseases), disruptions of homeostasis, etc.
      Not so healthy.

She did not add Russians and Ukrainians eat chalk. Lol why she focused only on Africans? Or why she did not researched the medicinal clay eating in Germany?...

Hi! Mann Library here responding to your question. As we learn in Dr. Young's presentation, pica is still a rather poorly understood phenomenon, and one unintended consequence of eating clay and earth may be anemia. If you'd like to learn more about Dr. Young's work, you can see a summary at her faculty page on the Cornell University website. Thanks for your interest!

I heard that pioneers in America ate dirt and passed it down to their children and some still crave it and do it. The right type of soil may be very good for you.

I don't like the part when she began to say "husbands" and then said "baby daddy" her speech is lame and 30 minutes boaring. Stick to what you know, eating dunkin donuts, drinking lattes or whatever their called. This situation is bigger than you'll ever be. Your not black you don't eat dirt/starch stay in lane.
