Apr 20, 1948, Hollywood - _Somebody Else, Not Me_ - James F. Hanley (music) & Ballard MacDonald (words) - Frank Bruno, trumpet; Pee Wee Hunt, trombone, vocal; Matty Matlock, clarinet; Carl Fischer, piano; Harvey Chernap, bass; Glenn Walker, drums. => Side A: _Twelfth Street Rag_ (Pee Wee's biggest hit)
*James F.* rederick *Hanley* (February 17, 1892 - February 8, 1942) was an American songwriter and author.
Hanley was born in Rensselaer, Indiana on February 17, 1892. He attended Champion College and the Chicago Musical College.
He served with the United States Army 82nd Division in World War I and during his military service he wrote an army musical show called _Toot Sweet._
On his discharge Hanley became a vaudeville accompanist. He went on to write songs for film and theater including many Broadway productions. He worked with numerous artists, most notably Buddy DeSylva, Edward Madden, Eddie Dowling, Percy Wenrich, Theodore F. Morse and Ballard MacDonald.
Hanley is best remembered for the hit songs "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" (1917), "Second Hand Rose" (1921) and "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" (1934). For the latter song, Hanley contributed both music and lyrics but for most of his songs he wrote the music alone.
He died of a heart attack at his home in Douglaston, Queens, on February 8, 1942, leaving a widow and five children. Hanley was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

*Ballard MacDonald* (October 15, 1882 - November 17, 1935) was an American lyricist, who was one of the writers of Tin Pan Alley.
Born in Portland, Oregon, he was a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
MacDonald wrote lyrics for a song called "Play That Barber-Shop Chord" in 1910, which became a hit with revised lyrics when it was sung in the Ziegfeld Follies by vaudeville star Bert Williams. He subsequently worked with composer Harry Carroll on "On the Mississippi" (1912) and "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" (1912, based on the novel of the same name). He also partnered with James F. Hanley, which produced the 1917 hit "(Back Home Again in) Indiana".
In the early 1920s, MacDonald turned his attention to Broadway revues, which in 1924 brought him his most notable musical collaborator in George Gershwin. In 1921 he wrote the lyrics to the musical _Love Birds._ In 1926, MacDonald teamed up with Walter Donaldson to write songs for the Broadway show _Sweetheart Time._
_Thumbs Up!_ was MacDonald's final Broadway show. He died in Forest Hills, New York.
