Motorcraft filters are the only filter I have used in my Ford vehicles for 30 years. I have been using the FL820S in my vehicles for the past 22 years and prior to that I used FL1A's on my 5.0 Mustangs. Never had a failure or malfunction and never an oil related issue for all of those years and hundreds of thousands of miles. My 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII had over 300,000 miles on it. My current car is a 2006 Crown Victoria with 160,000 miles and still runs perfect.
Well I guess so. lol

Pretty much the same oil filters. I'd have to go with the Motorcraft as it's got the silicone anti drain back valve, better inlet holes, and cost several dollars cheaper.
I have a 08 Ram Hemi which uses these filters and I'll probably switch to the Motorcraft. $7.88 vs $3.97 per unit at my local Walmart. Thanks Whip for the review!
Your Welcome Paul,
Thanks for Sharing!
I'd go with the Motorcraft.
Ford wins... Cheaper and better oval bypass holes and silicone anti drain back🤔
Better holes?
Surprised the Mopar has upper bypass valve; that is critical on the Ford modular engines.
Great video for me! I have a 2013 Ram with the 5.7 hemi and a 1995 Ford Thunderbird with the 4.6 2v. Both filters fit both vehicles! Guess I'm going with the motorcraft.
Hi LR,
Thanks for sharing!👍
Ford wins by a fender because it costs less for the same item and therefore offers a better value...Great video! 👍👍
I’ve seen that particular Motorcraft oil filter at Walmart for $3.99.
Thanks!👍😊
@@wasabitoburrion4409 almost $3.97 lol
On old engines I like the upper bypass, quick return, not dragging the sludge back up the center and possible jamming open those disc valves.. i just bought mopars to pull off the 6 mo. Old toughguard fram. Now I know they be a paper disc ends.
Great video exploration. If memory serves, they're both made under cotract by the Purolator folks in the Carolinas which is now owned by MANN+Hummel. Which is also where they make the NAPA and MicroGard filters as well. Good, high quality filters as I remember.
Thanks for sharing👍
MOPAR is a KLM filter. High quality company.
Love filter Friday!
These are the best looking OEM filters I have seen you open!
Thank you for all you do.
Thank You!👍😊
And they both use a stamped flat compression spring. Imagine that. ;)
They are very nice, for OEM...great design in the top By-Pass . Motorcraft gives you a silicone ADBV , and is cheaper. MOPAR must need to keeps its shareholders happier with that Price...Thanx WCW! ....Jethro
Chances are Ford and Mopar contract with the same manufacturer to make these filters.
Looks like Mike and Ike just alike to me…. Thanks for the good information you provide!! Really enjoy your videos.
Thank You!👍😊
For the price, you can't get a better quality filter than the Motorcraft. I even know Dodge/Mopar guys who use them. Sure there are higher end filters out there, for over $10 to $15. But for $4 at Walmart you will not find another filter of this high a quality level.
They have a good bypass valve, I wish their filter media was a little better though, but for the price a pretty good oil filter.
Thanks for sharing.👍
Given only those two choices the Motorcraft would be my selection. But, I am happy there are other choices.
👍
Great Video! Enjoy the Weekend, Cuz! 🙂
Hi Ella YouToo
Can you take note of the nominal space between filter frame and metal can for free oil flow!??? Some filters almost touch can.
It will be a while as these videos are made in advance, but I'll try and put that into my video's. Thanks!
I would go with Mopar
Just a question and maybe a video idea. Have you ever looked into what type of glue they use and how it reacts to oil or temp? It would be interesting possibly to have a better understanding of why they are ok with getting glue everywhere
I haven't but Ive opened a few used filters and the glue always seems to be hard and intact. I dont think there's a problem there except for sloppiness.
Yeah I own a 1998 Ford F150 4.2 L. I only use Motorcraft parts. Valvoline 5w-20 high mileage oil. It runs like a charm.
Thanks for Sharing👍
Good video , I have a 21 f250 . Just took off the factory filter , it had a spring at the bottom not the molded metal setup . Wonder why they do that from the factory . Was happy with the filter after chopping it up . A few break in metals but not bad . It was 900 miles . Put a 820s on .
That is strange, wonder who makes that oil filter?
@@WhipCityWrencher I will get the numbers off it later today for you .

There are a lot more louvers then holes. You can be sure FORD has an equal in-flow to out flow ratio with filter material in place. They value their motors also. And want them to last. Reputation and all..
What is the micron rating for the Mopar? I don’t think you covered that? I watched the video twice don’t recall the micron rating for the Mopar?? You mentioned the MotorCraft rating a couple of times
I couldn't find a micron rating for the Mopar filter, but looking at these filters I'd say it's the same as the Motorcraft.
This Motorcraft filter fits the Mercury Marquis/Ford Crown Vic plus several others. I buy mine on eBay $52.68 for (12) FL820S filters.
Thanks for Sharing!
Other than the anti drain back valves,I would say they are pretty much the same....
Except for the different base plates and the different center tubes --
I guess they're not as "the same" as was thought.
They share some of the same features. They are the same in some ways and different in others
duked it out!!im guessing it did get ugly 4the mopar filter.overpriced.solid filters.👍,thanks for this info again kind sir.🌚🤔👍.
😊👍 Your Welcome!
How do i go about sending you a used oil filter off my charger scat pack ? Should make For an interesting cut open review
Hi Caliber8,
Send me an email and I'll send you my address. My email is.

These Motorcraft Filters are great value! With other vehicles it cost $9 or more to get a decent filter
This video is 2 years old and the Oil filters have gone up.☹
Would you consider comparing Mopar MO-285 with Fleetguard LF16035? Application is Dodge/Ram with Cummins all model years. Thank you. If possible, a three-way including a Fleetguard LF3972 would be interesting.
Please remind me in a couple of months, as I'm booked with oil filter requests.
Thanks for watching!👍
@@WhipCityWrencher I shall... and thank you for considering my request. Approximately 1st of March I will send a reminder.
Here's a video of one of the oil filters you requested, I'll try and do the others as soon as I can ua-cam.com/video/tDs0-2dQfQA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=WhipCityWrencher
@@WhipCityWrencher thank you.
Good review. Give it to motorcade. Silicone drain back valve and loovers. Good info.
Thank You!👍😊
Motorcraft FL 820S Mopar uses a plain rubber bypass valve versus Motorcraft with the red silicone valve. The silicone is superior and all Motorcraft filters that use them have the S at the end of the part number. Both filters have the same thread ended bypass valve which allows the oil to bypass without going through the filter media. Motorcraft takes the win over Mopar, you can’t go wrong with it. Using an aftermarket without the proper bypass valve will create issues in these motors. Motorcraft oil filters with the bypass valve on the thread end are superior to any oil filter you will find. I also found that the Mopar filter was causing a ticking issue that I pinpointed down to the filter by using a stethoscope. When I went with Motorcraft, the ticking went away.
Thanks for Sharing👍
Anybody know what size filter cap wrench fits these new 820s ? I have the old style and didn't realize they changed the design and boy what a chore getting it off .
I think this is the one you want. www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W54107-Flutes-Filter/dp/B005R6BVGY?tag=expeditionforum-20&th=1

Could you cut open a MoPar MO-452 ? Description mentions burst pressure to be 300 psi. Wondering what's in it. Thanks.
It will be a while.
I put it on my to-do list.
Excellent Thank You
good filters - correct location of the by-pass valve - solves the problem of high-quality oil filtration, but both lack a good coil spring to correctly press the filter to the base plate
Right on!
These stamped leaf springs are flimsy and can collapse unlike the beefier bypass stamped leaf springs you find in some of the Supertech.
Although we see many filter testers raving about the poor quality of the stamped metal spring, the coil spring gives NO ADVANTAGE over the stamped metal spring. Notice that two (2) of the most expensive oil filters (Amsoil, Royal Purple) also use the stamped spring.
The stamped spring has NO EFFECT on the Relief Valve Pressure -- it just holds the filter guts in place.
The famous 95 MERC's V-8 engine runs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, 5-W-20; Bosch Premium #3410 Oil Filter; and a FILTERMAG #SS365PR Magnet Kit.
Oil & Filter changes at 5,000 miles.
@@WhipCityWrencher What do you mean by "beefier bypass stamped leaf springs" ?
None of your videos shows a "bypass stamped leaf spring".
In all your videos that I've seen, the actual By-Pass valves have tiny coil springs, set at different pressures.
In fact, your videos show that 2 of the MOST EXPENSIVE oil filters (Amsoil, Royal Purple) use the stamped leaf spring to hold the filter guts in place.

I use the Mopar because I got a Dodge.
Hi
Hi, what is the number " 3510 22 " on the bottom please? Is it the date of manufacture or not? 22 like 2022? Thank you
I would guess the 22 is the year it was made but I'm not sure. I don't know how to decipher the Mopar date code.
I have learned how to decipher the Motorcraft oil filter date code and it was made on July 6th, 2021.
@@WhipCityWrencher thanks a lot for the quick reply. it is very important for me because yesterday they changed my oil at the service. I waited a week for the filter, then they told me that it was a different one, but that they would get a new one within an hour. which I thought was strange. but they sold me the car with the fact that the oil and filter had been changed. When I got home, I noticed that the invoice says 0W20 oil, but the RAM 1500 5.7 includes 5W20, so I got under the car to check. But the oil filter seems to be old, original and they didn't even touch it. Only if the number below indicated the year of manufacture, then it would be fine. So I don't know if I should go and complain to the service technician.
@@batlife76 That sucks. The date code really won't tell you much because I've gotten new filters that were a few years old (old stock).
If the filter looks old on the outside then it probably hasn't been changed. The New filter should look and be clean. I'd look at the dipstick too, the oil should look clean also. Good Luck👍💯
@@WhipCityWrencher thanks, the oil is clean. The filter doesn't look new but it has the number 3202 24 so I was hoping it might be. I'd rather take it to the next service.
What were the micron ratings?
80% at 20 microns
I have been told that motorcraft filters with thick easy removed rubber gasket is fakes
Never heard such a thing as fake Motorcraft oil filters, there cheap as it is, and I wouldn't think there is any money to be made there.
Their OEM parts on the other hand are a different story.
I just can’t trust anything from Chrysler fiat at all.
Chrysler fiat doesn't make the oil filters so that is a pretty moot point...
How did you know it was a she ?
LOL the underside tells all🤣
..I have come to he conclusion that probably about 95% of oil filters are made by either Champion Labs or Mann&Hummel.....
You probably aren't that far off. Mann and Hummel bought out a lot of companies.
When you buy a Ford you're gonna need lots of filter media for the metal chunks
Hey, I own A Ford. LOL🤣
