  • A playthrough of Bandai's 1990 game for the NES, Dynowarz: The Destruction of Spondylus.
Dynowarz is one of those games that very few people seem to remember, often evoking those "I thought I knew about NES and I've never even heard of this" type responses. Why is that?
Well, probably because it was a thoroughly mediocre game that never seemed to strive to be anything more than that. I don't think it's strikingly awful or anything, but it's pretty bland, ugly, and uninspired. The game is alternates between two different styles: in one, you platform as Professor Proteus in his "battle suit" through enemy bases to destroy their cores, while the other gives you control of "Cyborasaurus," a "Robosaur" who has to destroy other Robosaurs to collect power-ups as he transports the Professor to the next base entrance.
Do this enough times and you'll see a static picture with a congratulatory message and the game ends. It's pretty simple and straightforward. It's also pretty easy once you figure out which power-ups to grab and which to leave behind, but it's pretty clunky. A "no-hit" run doesn't seem too likely unless you cheat since the hit detection tends to be pretty hit-or-miss, and the jumping controls are often extremely awkward (just try lining up a shot while in midair!).
The idea probably would appeal to kids - I doubt the resemblance to Power Rangers (or anything else similar to the Power/Sentai Rangers) was accidental, and who doesn't want to be a giant robot dinosaur? Well, if your child wants to become one when they grow up, this might convince them otherwise! It's entertaining enough to begin with, but it's likely to bore you before you ever get to the end. It did me.

The music is so atmospheric, I can feel the isolation and emptiness of the outer areas, being barren, outside of a few robots, I love it.
I bought this game off eBay (With sleeve and manual) for Hanukkah of 2018 along with Mother 3...
You can probably tell which game I got more mileage out of, but I don’t regret the 9 dollars I spent on Dynowarz.
It’s been a year since I first played this, and while Mother 3 became my 2nd favorite game in history ever, Dynowarz I mostly forgot about, except for that great Dino mech music.

Dynowarz seems like a perfect concept for an awesome video game (who doesn't want to be a giant robot dinosaur?!), but it fumbles the idea pretty badly. It's not terrible, and I really wouldn't recommend it, but don't let my opinion stop you if your interested - I found it too clunky and boring, but who knows? You might like it just fine.

I still remember my best friend boasting about this new game he got- it sounded like the most amazing thing in the world. I was entranced by the idea of piloting a giant robot dinosaur, and loved the robot's design. Then I watched him play it. Just... endless, endless boring levels with the same "flat plane, then sometimes a little second level" design, followed by just standing there and blasting an enemy boss", and then REALLY BORING "human levels". Just terrible. What a disappointment- if only they'd put that great sprite design into a quality game- we'd still be talking about it to this day!

I remember that this game (its cover) caught my attention and my parents rented it to me (perhaps on more than one occasion). Unfortunately, it had a bug that prevented me from advancing more than 5 minutes, as the game was freezing before entering the first cavern. I didn't even remember its name, but I finally saw what secrets it kept behind and I think it wasn't so bad that it was broken, because I changed it for something else (surely Mega Man 3, Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania III, which were my favorite games) .

Now just imagine if they remade this game with the same level of luscious environmental detail that Mass Effect had, the action combat that Zone of the Enders 2 had, and the character customization that Custom Robo had. Throw in some RPG elements, unlockables, interstellar travel, and the ability to transform from robosaur to fighter mech and back. So many possibilities for older games like this, with a treasure trove of original ideas locked behind older generations of consoles, and yet they lay stagnant.

    • @alucard624

This type of game is ripe for a proper remake with modern gameplay mechanics. But no, all we seem to get is yet another 3rd person cover shooter with gear loot mechanics with Outriders, and more Call of Duty nonsense instead of something actually interesting. It's sad when it's the bootleg looking indie games that seem to be the only ones taking any sort of risks these days.

Okay I'm born in 98 so I'm removed from the nostalgia but watching this there isn't much variety in levels and enemies compared to other NES games so I can imagine the gameplay feeling sluggish on OP's end. It doesn't do the phenomenal cover art any justice.
