Joe's character arc was the most moving to me. He really became a proper human in the end. Compassionate, loving, warm. A stark contrast to his season one persona but very well developed through the show's 4 year run.
I've never watched a series that affected me as much as this. I'm a child of the late 60's who grey up living the life of these characters. I was there. I did this. This was my life. It still is. I built my life in IT.

There are so many of us out there who went on the same journey. The scene where Gordon is dying is the most beautiful sequence of film I’ve seen on the small screen. Ever. I watched it a couple of years ago and I still flash back to scenes I remember.
Same. I felt the same way when I finished this series. I so badly wanted to share it. It changed me. I listened to “Baby Mine” on repeat while cooking and just lingered in that moment. Gordo was my favourite, but I find myself craving these characters. Their arc was so good and their complex character development. I loved all of them for different reasons and the energy they brought to the screen. So beautiful, touching, moving. Great, just great 😌🧡🙏👌
That last scene with Gordon just shows how far him and Donna had come. It made me think of my own parents - how people change, how sweet they were when they were young. So touching 🥺😭🧡
Same thoughts here. I was crying .. I just did not want the series to end at all. All seasons were brilliant but Season 4 was so emotional. I just finished watching in UK its July 2023.
One of the best TV dramas ever made. Incredible characters in a unique period piece with excellent writing and grade-A production alone would make it worth my time. But it's the pace and beauty of the show, along with its theme, that sealed it for me. Rarely, if ever, have I seen a show take its time so confidently while still being engaging. Because of this, the show lets the viewer more fully realize the scenes and characters they are watching. Halt and Catch Fire is a show about Failure, though rarely is that theme simply negative. Failure can be bittersweet, a successful failure, or an opportunity that opens up new doors. No other show runs with this particular theme so well.

Lovely to hear the interviews here, as I am suffering now from Halt withdrawal symptoms. I love how joe's ending suggests that he will not be trying to create something new but instead push up and coming creators to create something new as he has done before with Cameron, Gordon, Ryan, etc. It's kind of like he represents the computer in his quote. "the computer isn't the thing. it's the thing that gets you to the thing."
It was the best version of "the thing" that he was looking for that was possible for him, really. There wouldn't have been one idea or company that satisfied him; he was the futures man, the guy who was always looking the next thing. As Cameron says to him at Comdex, his talent is in bringing people together and creating change. He always wanted to influence people's direction, and especially in his later years wanted to genuinely care for and push the talents of younger people like Haley. It was perfect.
I like to think that earlier in the show since he was selfish and arrogant, he then finds peace within himself after those 10 years and dedicates his life to helping others

What a beautiful show with a such a moving ending. Not sure how I missed this one when it was on the air! It's so rare to see real transformation on television. Joe at the ending - driving a Lotus (a symbol of enlightenment and rebirth) instead of a Porsche, going to the classroom to teach and inspire, instead of recruit. He's someone who could see the big picture in industry, but now he's seeing the big picture in life. He talks about computers not being the thing - but the thing that gets you to the thing. And that's people. But people aren't things, and in the ends we see that Joe really gets that, that they all do. I grew up in Armonk, NY so that bit of personal history made the ending a bit sweeter.
Thank you very much for the Lotus information. That's really what I hope for the character. What he searches all his life, his failures, his confusions, Enlightenment is what he really needs. Like St Jobs, meditation.
This will go down as one my favorite shows ever. I watched it all the way through from when first aired and I've been binge watching it again this past week. I'll no doubt watch it 5 more times all the way through as the years go by. I connected with this show probably more than any other.

I really connected with this show on a personal level..as a woman in the IT industry I lived and felt the journey and experiences of these characters..this show was so well written and acting was superb..we need more shows like this

Incredible. I worked in IT all the way from early 80's. So very nostalgic for me but my wife who has no interest or experience in IT thought the show was amazing. We both really really enjoyed it.
So I started watching this show when they were two seasons in, I think. I lost track of it on the way and only got reminded about it a few days ago, after watching the main guy in Foundation. Of course I had to binge watch the whole thing from beginning, and I LOVED every minute of it. Every character's journey is such a thrill, but none like Joe's of course. The fact that he ends up teaching is a great fit, as this was always his talent - guiding people, helping them find their way. Plus the season 4 story about him wanting kids fits right in. But Humanities, really? How? He was in tech, don't tell me he's got a degree in Literature, for god's sake 🙄 Anywho, great ending, really! Hope I'll rewatch it some day and get as much pleasure out of it as I got now, six- seven years after the first time I watched it.
We don't know much about the details of his position but he probably got either an honorary degree or honorary position. It is his hometown and he is kind of famous at this point, it's not completely out there for him to end up working at the local uni. The class he was teaching was quite small so it's possibly a specialized or grad credit. We also don't really ever know his education background. He presumably got the job at IBM because of his dad, but we don't know what his degree is in or if he has one.
There are time jumps. It's not super obvious in the show, but there was a timeline kicking around a while back and I'm not sure where they got the information, but Joe and Cam split a whole year after Gordon died. Then when the last scene happened, can't remember the date, but yes there is some liberty taking, I mean it is TV. I don't know how strict university/college institutions were in the earlier 90s about teacher's having the qualifications to teach. In the UK and Aus, I believe you could do a one year teaching training course on top of industry experience, of not now. Anyway, whatever, yes it is a great ending for Joe!

One of the best television shows ever. Fantastic and memorable cast. Great writing and acting. A lot of valuable life lessons were taught. If I had a wish , I wish that the complete series was available for purchase. It's a show worth watching and then rewatching. 👍
I do not generally react to a show very often.....I can actually remember the last time over 20 years ago. This show was amazing. I will forever miss my final reaction to the final episode. I rate Halt and Catch Fire as one of the top 5 shows of my lifetime. I will miss Joe, Cam, Bos, Donna and Gordon very much. So very well written. Godspeed HACF !!!!

For me Ronan was not great, typical cookie cutter MCU villain. Lee Pace auditioned for Starlord. It's a crime to cover him up in that much makeup, anyone could've done that role. Still got him to a wider audience... So I guess, what do I know 🤣
As a kid who lived in the early tech industry from x86 pc clones, nes, to the playstation and early adopter of Internet in the dot com era this show was a nostalgia trip, I grew up with these machines it was fun to watch and remember how these shaped my life my interest and fascination of technology.
Finished the finale, sucks this show was seen as the heir apparent to Mad Men when it wasn't that. Instead, it was something else entirely, more fast-moving, fast twitched television. It stands all by itself. It was a roller coaster where all the leads absolutely rocked out in their roles. This show will be lost to time, it just never got the award show recognition or ratings but it's a really short list if you are looking for series that are better than "Halt and Catch Fire".
I know everyone thinks that what Donna planned has something to do with tech, or online music, online payment and all that. But I really just want it to be a diner or a cafe. Something that doesn't revolve around her and Cameron's actual love but something that would make Cam stay behind and also be able to do what she wants in the tech world, but also stay with Donna, Boz and Hayley. Its simple. And thats what I want for them.

I just watched the final season this week. There is sometimes in my opinion an opportunity to do less in a series finale. I thought that moment when Donna rushed out of the diner to say, "Cameron...I have an idea" would be that moment, and it was for the most part. The series should have ended right there, or they should have swapped the order of the scene with Joe in the classroom and that one. The end with Joe was a little indulgent in the need to come full circle. Just an opinion. This is a great show, and i don't think it should have gone on for more seasons. I think it ended right on time.
Without a doubt the final 10 minutes of Six Feet Under was the most touching way to end a great series and it completely wrapped up the show. I still get affected watching the ending to that show. That said - Halt and Catch Fire is an amazing show and the finale was wonderful. I started in IT in the early 80's, lived and grew up through each one of the transitions of the industry in that show. Started and sold or lost a few companies in IT, connected with the characters in the show and it now is driving me to find the 'next big thing' for myself. The passion of the characters in their businesses is infectious. Loved the show!
@@alexptx They ended the show at the perfect moment. When Netscape went public and the stock exploded big money realized there money to be made in the internet. The small, mom & pop companies like Comet either couldn't compete or got bought up. The whole scene changed.
This show reminded me somehow the book "the Carpetbaggers" by its spirit.. A very good atmospheric series (however, in my very-very humble opinion, slightly too many "tolerant" moments - but I suppose filmmakers are obliged to insert them now..) Lee and Mackenzie - are incredible stars here (however Lee is incredible in every show he is involved in).
This was such an amazing show. I stumbled upon it by accident after seeing a clip on UA-cam and binged it in 2 days. The evolution of all characters was phenomenal. Joe's character arc was especially well written, from being a total asshole to the nicest guy out there.
Such a great series! My spouse and I watched all 4 seasons in a few days. As entrepreneurs, we both related to the blending of business & personal challenges & triumphs. We both wished we had more friends & acquaintances like the characters in the show. Like-minded folks. Perhaps in the venture capital world, it's a nonstop parade of dynamic individuals 24/7. But in small towns in the Midwest, it takes a minor miracle to swing a dinner party or afternoon at the beach. If you didn't sit with someone at lunch in the 8th grade, the concept of friendship is almost out of the question. The Kung Flu PLAN-demic didn't exactly help things. I think Donna's big idea was online banking! She looked at the customers, heard the register, received the money, and thought, 'online money transactions'. Thus, PayPal, Donna and Cameron style, was born.
I actually that Donna was just gonna open up a coffee shop and run it together with Cameron. Yea I know it is stupid of me but it's kinda makes sense. Donna and Cameron were always too passionate about tech business and she knows that going into tech again will just ruin their relationship one more time. So maybe they should just do business together for the sake of their friendship but away from the stress of tech business.

Nothing terribly interesting came out in those years. It was still a land grab for a while until the late 90s.

So Cameron, spends the entire show complaining how she did everything by herself and everyone takes from her, because they hate to see women succeed. I have upmost respect for women, but like men, there are the good, the bad, and the ugly. By ugly I dont mean looks. Lets all take a step back and take Joe out of the picture. maybe instead of Dallas, he goes to Los Angeles and never meets Cameron. Cameron finishes college and gets a job at Texas Instruments where she becomes Donna's coworker. every day she wakes up goes to work and meets Donna at the break room as they pour their bosses coffee. The End! Eventually Gordan hates his job, or maybe Cardiff Electronics finally goes out of business so he works for his father in law which has nothing to do with what he knows, so he changes careers and eventually sucks so bad at it, he works as a high school electronics teacher for the rest of his life.

Without Hedy Lamarr, Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace, Mary Lou Jepsen, Roberta Williams, Radia Perlman, Barbara Liskov and so many others, we wouldn't have any of the technologies we have today. And there is nothing wrong with showing the personal aspects of working in a startup, this is how things are, Steve Jobs was a total a-hole personally, he stole the company from his co-founders, he denied his daughter for years, he stole all the tech and they still claim ownership to it to this day.
Cameron blew it, big time. Would it really have killed her to have a baby with the man of her dreams? Just knock one out, toss the kid to him and crack on. She maintained the immaturity of her punk youth but when you turn 30, that gets ugly. I couldn't believe that her fractious relationship with Donna was one she considered her greatest achievement. Really, Cam? Donna grew from brilliant, loving homemaker and under-appreciated engineer to really aggressive, heartless Woman In Tech who destroyed the best thing she ever made - a solid marriage - for pearls and Silicon Valley parties. Awful. Kerry Bishé is an amazing actress. Joe - I agree with the others here that his transformation was convincing. He lives with his scars and losses, but it's a life well-lived. I'm most sad he blew his marriage for Cameron, because she was only ever committed to herself. Boz. I looked forward to scenes with Bosworth because of just how well the character is written and played. Just magical writing and acting. Gordon. My favourite. I couldn't believe how it ended for him. I felt saddest for his new, heartbroken girlfriend. Season 1 has been incorrectly said to be the weakest season. It is the most tightly written. There's some fat in Season 3 and 4 - like the Ryan sub-plot which didn't go anywhere and got lost. I can say that it's a show that will stay long in my memory and deserves to be celebrated.
I know the feeling! After each season I stopped watching for a bit because I was afraid that something would happen that ruined it all for me or ruin the characters etc. but if you have not already: continue watching! This show is amazing from start to fnish!
Really loved the show! Specially Joe! except for the sneaky feminism stupidness after the first 2 seasons, Especially last episode! Base on the show, feminists should have no complains about being included, the wamans run everything, so which is it? U can tell when the feminists got in by looking at Donna, after season 3 she turns to a different character. They even kill off both males! One physically one spiritually.

One of the best television shows ever. Fantastic and memorable cast. Great writing and acting. A lot of valuable life lessons were taught. If I had a wish , I wish that the complete series was available for purchase. It's a show worth watching and then rewatching. 👍

I do not generally react to a show very often.....I can actually remember the last time over 20 years ago. This show was amazing. I will forever miss my final reaction to the final episode. I rate Halt and Catch Fire as one of the top 5 shows of my lifetime. I will miss Joe, Cam, Bos, Donna and Gordon very much. So very well written. Godspeed HACF !!!!

me like him 10 times more.
For me Ronan was not great, typical cookie cutter MCU villain. Lee Pace auditioned for Starlord. It's a crime to cover him up in that much makeup, anyone could've done that role. Still got him to a wider audience... So I guess, what do I know 🤣
As a kid who lived in the early tech industry from x86 pc clones, nes, to the playstation and early adopter of Internet in the dot com era this show was a nostalgia trip, I grew up with these machines it was fun to watch and remember how these shaped my life my interest and fascination of technology.

I always felt like that PHOENIX scene was showing us what S05 would have been.
Finished the finale, sucks this show was seen as the heir apparent to Mad Men when it wasn't that. Instead, it was something else entirely, more fast-moving, fast twitched television. It stands all by itself. It was a roller coaster where all the leads absolutely rocked out in their roles. This show will be lost to time, it just never got the award show recognition or ratings but it's a really short list if you are looking for series that are better than "Halt and Catch Fire".

I know everyone thinks that what Donna planned has something to do with tech, or online music, online payment and all that. But I really just want it to be a diner or a cafe. Something that doesn't revolve around her and Cameron's actual love but something that would make Cam stay behind and also be able to do what she wants in the tech world, but also stay with Donna, Boz and Hayley. I just watched the final season this week. There is sometimes in my opinion an opportunity to do less in a series finale. I thought that moment when Donna rushed out of the diner to say, "Cameron...I have an idea" would be that moment, and it was for the most part. The series should have ended right there, or they should have swapped the order of the scene with Joe in the classroom and that one. The end with Joe was a little indulgent in the need to come full circle. Just an opinion. This is a great show, and i don't think it should have gone on for more seasons. I think it ended right on time.
I agree with all bur the order, I liked that Joe started and ended the whole show, for me it was a nice touch.

The only thing I wish is that they did did something like in Six Feet Under's finale. Do a quick revist, a picture and a blurb of them 20 years on.
Without a doubt the final 10 minutes of Six Feet Under was the most touching way to end a great series and it completely wrapped up the show. I still get affected watching the ending to that show. That said - Halt and Catch Fire is an amazing show and the finale was wonderful. I started in IT in the early 80's, lived and grew up through each one of the transitions of the industry in that show. Started and sold or lost a few companies in IT, connected with the characters in the show and it now is driving me to find the 'next big thing' for myself. The passion of the characters in their businesses is infectious. Loved the show!

@@alexptx They ended the show at the perfect moment. When Netscape went public and the stock exploded big money realized there money to be made in the internet. The small, mom & pop companies like Comet either couldn't compete or got bought up. The whole scene changed.

This show reminded me somehow the book "the Carpetbaggers" by its spirit.. A very good atmospheric series (however, in my very-very humble opinion, slightly too many "tolerant" moments - but I suppose filmmakers are obliged to insert them now..) Lee and Mackenzie - are incredible stars here (however Lee is incredible in every show he is involved in).

This was such an amazing show. I stumbled upon it by accident after seeing a clip on UA-cam and binged it in 2 days. The evolution of all characters was phenomenal. Joe's character arc was especially well written, from being a total asshole to the nicest guy out there.
Such a great series! My spouse and I watched all 4 seasons in a few days. As entrepreneurs, we both related to the blending of business & personal challenges & triumphs. We both wished we had more friends & acquaintances like the characters in the show. Like-minded folks. Perhaps in the venture capital world, it's a nonstop parade of dynamic individuals 24/7. But in small towns in the Midwest, it takes a minor miracle to swing a dinner party or afternoon at the beach. If you didn't sit with someone at lunch in the 8th grade, the concept of friendship is almost out of the question. The Kung Flu PLAN-demic didn't exactly help things. I actually that Donna was just gonna open up a coffee shop and run it together with Cameron. Yea I know it is stupid of me but it's kinda makes sense. Donna and Cameron were always too passionate about tech business and she knows that going into tech again will just ruin their relationship one more time. So maybe they should just do business together for the sake of their friendship but away from the stress of tech business.

My first thought was music, like the mp3s... and file sharing... Doesn't fit considering it's illegal... Maybe it's GeoCities. People making their own websites. Meh. Nothing terribly interesting came out in those years. It was still a land grab for a while until the late 90s.

So Cameron, spends the entire show complaining how she did everything by herself and everyone takes from her, because they hate to see women succeed. I have upmost respect for women, but like men, there are the good, the bad, and the ugly. By ugly I dont mean looks. Lets all take a step back and take Joe out of the picture. maybe instead of Dallas, he goes to Los Angeles and never meets Cameron. Cameron finishes college and gets a job at Texas Instruments where she becomes Donna's coworker. every day she wakes up goes to work and meets Donna at the break room as they pour their bosses coffee. The End! Eventually Gordan hates his job, or maybe Cardiff Electronics finally goes out of business so he works for his father in law which has nothing to do with what he knows, so he changes careers and eventually sucks so bad at it, he works as a high school electronics teacher for the rest of his life.

Cameron blew it, big time. Would it really have killed her to have a baby with the man of her dreams? Just knock one out, toss the kid to him and crack on. She maintained the immaturity of her punk youth but when you turn 30, that gets ugly. I couldn't believe that her fractious relationship with Donna was one she considered her greatest achievement. Donna grew from brilliant, loving homemaker and under-appreciated engineer to really aggressive, heartless Woman In Tech who destroyed the best thing she ever made - a solid marriage - for pearls and Silicon Valley parties. Awful. Kerry Bishé is an amazing actress.
Joe - I agree with the others here that his transformation was convincing. He lives with his scars and losses, but it's a life well-lived. I'm most sad he blew his marriage for Cameron, because she was only ever committed to herself.
Boz. I looked forward to scenes with Bosworth because of just how well the character is written and played. Just magical writing and acting.
Gordon. My favourite. I couldn't believe how it ended for him. I felt saddest for his new, heartbroken girlfriend.
Season 1 has been incorrectly said to be the weakest season. It is the most tightly written. There's some fat in Season 3 and 4 - like the Ryan sub-plot which didn't go anywhere and got lost.
I can say that it's a show that will stay long in my memory and deserves to be celebrated.

I know the feeling! After each season I stopped watching for a bit because I was afraid that something would happen that ruined it all for me or ruin the characters etc. but if you have not already: continue watching! This show is amazing from start to fnish!

They didn't kill off Joe. He grew as a person. Became grounded.
