What was your favorite cinematic and why? And give us some back story on the guy Reinhardt looked up to?

That guy was General Balderich von Adler, leader of the Crusaders, an elite group of armored soldiers who lived in the spirit of knighthood and protected Germany.
Balderich von Adler was Reinhardt's mentor in the Crusaders. A father figure type, and a friend.
Balderich von Adler was the leader of the Crusaders, an elite group of soldiers from the Bundeswehr (German Army.) He was born and raised in Eichenwalde (the city in witch this cinematic takes place) and was descended from the nobles who used to rule in this city.
During the Omnic Crisis (the big war between Robots and Humans), the German city of Stuttgart was almost destroyed by the Omnics (the robots) but were repealed by the Crusaders and the Bundeswehr (as seen in the cinematic "the Last Bastion", when Bastion has a flashback of the war).
But after the slaughter that was this battle, the German army was in disaray and needed time to regroup and push back the Omnics.
So, the Crusaders with help of the German's Mountain Infantry Battalion lured the Omnics in the now abandonned city of Eichenwalde to take a stand and give the Bundeswehr time to mount a counter-offensive.
The mission was a success, Stuttgart was saved and victory was celebrated.
But the Crusaders were wiped to a man, Reinhardt (who inherited Balderich spot to take part in the birth of the UN sponsored task force "Overwatch"), and Balderich died on the throne of his ancestors after saving countless lives.
Btw, "I am your shield" is one of Reinhardt line in the game when he activate his shield to protect his teamates.

The girl was torbjorns daughter who also happens to be reinhardts mechanic for his gear
When Balderich says "I have been called. I must answer." in the beginning, that's why Reinhardt says the same thing at the end. He is duty-bound to do it on Balderich's stead, to honor his old friend's sacrifice.

I lost it at “Be their Sheild.” He says that always in matches, in memory of his fallen comrade. I was a mess when he ended with “Always”.

I felt that always to, it hit me different.
It really hits me now when you play him in game, he tells you to get behind him and everything. D=

I honestly felt much worse knowing how he is always a such high spirits character in game, and to realize he always had this hanging over his head while he lets out a laugh for his friends.

Saitama It's fucking with me how they make that "I will be your shield" voice line mean so much now. Like, every time I hear that in a match I'm gonna tear up ;-;
I felt exactly the same way when I heard that in this cinematic, from now on that voiceline in game will have a much deeper meaning when I hear it. Reinhardt main 4 life!!

It's really powerful towards the end. They sure know how to get you in the feels within a very short time frame.
It’s amazing how Blizzard make you care for the characters in their animations in so short time. I’ve seen main characters die in full production movies and don’t even care about it
Rioxam if they make a movie, people would be crying in buckets.
Darryl Ferguson a full overwatch movie would be awesome but it would be better if they do it after showing the past of all the characters
A movie would be a difficult task to pull off and would definitely have to be made for the fans since it would not be possible for a casual viewer to pick up on the story or the background of each character and what not.
Cameron Park the movie would be easy. Overwatch storytelling almost all video. The game only has voicelines that hint at more of the story. Seperating story from game is no accident. They are setting it up for a big budget movie.
Rioxam they are gonna do backstories for all the characters first before they make a movie

I love watching Rein's two soldiers and their reactions to each event
they go from laughing at Reinhardt, showing they didn't have much respect for him
then when they get orders to move out, those two look depressed because Rein clearly has a history of not protecting them as he should. every battle is far deadlier than it should be.
then near the end, as Reinhardt shields them, they are in a state of almost shock. Which turns into sorrow at the realization that the commander was left behind
"Live with honor. Die with glory."
So touching how Reinhardt struggled to return the second half of the Crusader motto when he realized his mentor was actually going to die.
Reinhardt was pushed out of Overwatch because he was too old. When he turned 50 they forced him to retire.
as odd as it might seem that actually makes sense as Rein isn't really someone who'd stay in the rear directing the troops. Also this is the time Overwatch (the organization that is not the game) was under investigation and issues due possible misdeeds and depending how the timelines fit Overwatch had just lost their second in command, who was also one of founding members in the line of duty (Ana Amari). So it's possible that Director Petras (aka commander Morrison's boss) thought that loosing Reinhart in battle would be too much bad press for Overwatch.
By the sounds of it this caused something bad to happen, I'm the Storm Rising event mode Tracer and Mercy talk about something unfortunate happening caused by Reinhardt and that he took it pretty hard, making him retire early and disgraced.
And now he’s 72 and he still fights, although if you charge in to a wall he’ll say “I’ll feel that in the morning”. You know he’s old but he’s one of those old guys that’s going to die before he retires.
Music when Reinhardt bursts through the wall to protect the soldiers is amazingly beautiful
I don't know what it is, but Blizzard just has a way of making us feel so emotional in every cinematic they make!

This video gave me a lot of love for my main character. I love Reinhardt, and everything about him. It's a shame that I just couldn't play the game anymore because it became so infuriating for me.
This one made me cry, too. I know that feeling of losing someone you looked up to. That's why this got me.

I think it was Mercy who pushed Reinhardt into retirement just before Overwatch was disbanded. The redhead, Bridgett is Torbjorn's oldest kid and Reinhardts squire. She helped him maintain his armor like Torb used to when he was in OW.
Never be ashamed to cry when you feel moved, JV - you have a big heart, and there's no shame in that.
At Blizzcon (or in some interview I read, can't remember which) the Devs said they purposely make those sad.

Great cinematic and shows off all their abilities. The OR45 (Orissa) used fortify to stop the Reinhardt charge, Reinhardt’s mentor used firestrike and finally earthshatter as his final move. While telling Reinhardt’s story, they are actually also showing newb Reinhardts playstyle just charging off into enemy lines which causes his mentors death and finally understanding “your team needs you... be thier shield”.

Hey guys this is super late, but y’all have one of the most genuine reactions on UA-cam and we appreciate the content. Fun facts about this episode:
1. This animation depicts the fall of Eichenwald during the Omnic Crisis and is a major battle in Germany. This is also a playable map in the game.
2. The colonel is actually seen in the map and after this animation was released Blizzard added the coin on the throne.
3. This was also a teaser to a new playable hero (the girl) who is actually Tornjorn’s daughter.
Others have probably mentioned this, but in case no one has I’ve left this here.
