This is the first time I have ever heard any performance ever by Umphrey's Mcgee since I'm researching to sing a cover of this song myself. Other than a little bit of shakiness in the lead vocals and harmonies, I was blown away by these guys. The actual music sounded amazing and the speed of the guitar moving through licks in the improvisation was sick! Also, this song is a bitch to sing live, especially in at full tempo with a lot of energy. As Tim and Erich would say, "Great Job!"
@@sythe77 These guys are ok but Leonid's drummer and particularly the lead guitarist Sergey are streets ahead in my view - I guess its a matter of taste.
people that don't like jam bands can't comprehend music.... there's a reason there's so few jam bands, it takes an ungodly amount of talent to improvise captivating music. Umph's does it absolutely brilliantly... and if you haven't actually been there and seen them live, you lose all credibility bashing them.... '
No Too Many Jam Bands Lack imagination or talent. It Requires large doses of both every night Saw many Dead Shows back in the golden age Some THE EARTH MOVED! Other nights It just yawned or belched. This Band Shows Megatons of imagination& talent nightly listen& enjoy Bands This Great Are As rare as meteoritites & too often just as fleeting are one of the .Umphrey MaGee are truly great& would be40 years ago or 40 years from now
Jake's guitar solo at the end, especially starting about 4:15 into the song, is SICK in the best way. It channels Terry Kath yet layers on Jake's styles. Nicely done!
This is why I love Umph's. They always try new ideas and songs and different things. Plus, they keep such a close connection with their fans, unlike any other band. They show a true appreciation for their fans
All these haters, this is live, not cleaned up. They just have fun with songs, and usually sound pretty damn good. Stop comparing fun covers to originals, I dont see you up there, lamos, these guys are great
Awesome performance... I don't know HOW the guys on stage can play with that mind blowing lightshow going on though!! I don't know who choreographed the lights, but they're right up there with the musical performance.. both truly mind-blowing!! (Wish the horns were up in the mix a bit more... be my only nitpick)
Jefferson Waful is their light guy. He is amazing. There is a vid of him doing their song "Nothing too Fancy" and explaining how he programs the lights live etc. Very interesting.
MYERS IS INSANE!!! LOVE THE HARMONIES!!! UMPHREY'S IS NO DOUBT THE MOST TALENTED BAND IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW!!! JUST EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM IS SO TIGHT AND PRECISE WHILE ALSO BEING COMPLETELY CREATIVE AND EMOTIONALLY DRIVEN! ALL ARE GREAT MUSICIANS AMAZING
but for reals, go see these guys, I cant wait for their show Feb 18th in Detroit...I'm sensing a 3rd set in my future...get tickets through their website to avoid fees...
At first upon seeing this, I was like wha, I mean I get they're from Chicago but covering Chicago....but then I remembered I have seen them cover even the Flock of Seagulls so actually I'm not surprised, because they can make any classic garbage good.
Very well done cover of the original, the original lineup would be proud. Solo sounds like something Kath would do, except this is shorter. Sax and trumpet parts are reversed, which I found interesting.
To apatriot4usa: THANK YOU. I gave more of a technical analysis, but I noticed your comment afterwards and I liked how you said it: "Vocals and guitar--out of your league." I'm glad somebody else here had the ears to hear and the balls to say it. Thanks. That said, I DO like his voice a lot, but not on this song.
He's the same guy as apatriot4usa that was posting earlier in the comments. He knows exactly whay he's doing and you're just feeding him. Pay him no mind and he'll find something else to troll.
lol you have no clue. this group is full of super talented musicians. both of the the guitar players, Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss are beasts. they can shred harder than the chicago guitar players and they are more versatile, they play every kind of music. and fyi, this band is everything but a cover band...
Guys, I love UM, but they are not the next Phish. The the biggest I could see them getting is about SCI as far as jambands go. Do y'all honestly believe UM will ever headline Bonnaroo or have years of selling out arenas and ampitheaters? If they were going to blow up it would have happened by now.
These are studio songs your talking about."chicago jamming" on a studio album where everything is planned is totally different. Umphreys is known for progressive improv. Live. Like in the moment. Things that nearly no bands do. Chicagos a ok band musically and talent wise. But with the exception of vocals..no group can do what these guys do. Your also like what 60? You cant realize that music changes? Your an old school dude who wont get to see any of your favorite bands. so now your upset.
also if you study an instrument thats when this band comes to life. There not chicago, and chicagos not umphreys. But anybody who studys the instument knows these cats are down right talented. Maybe the vocals arent the strongpoint, but chicago cant have 20 minutes of focused improv on a stage and make it sound good. So until youve studied the game... sit the next couple plays out.
Ya i didnt say that. Im saying that its not improvised playing live... and improvising are different things. They dont change songs segway into different things and make music on the spot. thats not chicago. Im not clueless. But this is pointless so good talk.
hahahaha dude they have like over 150 originals, and play prolly 2 covers a show typically... out of alik 15 song set. Name a big band that doesnt play 2 covers in a full set?
I disagree with you. I love Phish...but they sound nothing like they did before their hiatus...nothing like it...UM has the capability to blow up nationally...and with the following they have...selling out amphitheaters isn't all that far fetched. On the flip side...ever think that UM are just wanting to blaze their own trail..and not be the "next" anyone? The band is just amazing...and honestly that's all that matters.
Hey kylehockey91. I don't hear chicago covering any umphrey songs. Wonder why? If you think that you can't compare kath and cetera to the guitar player and singer this cover band. You don't know the first thing about music .talent . Guitar playing. Vocals. Or for that matter anything else under the sun! Sorry!
Ya your right.what ever their names are that can't compete with kath and peter! Its kind of like watching the remake of true grit . You can't compete with john wayne. I don't know what the guitar players name is. He lost the mood and the groove on some of his licks on this cover . He screwed up the guitar in this song. He's not kath. He's guitar player in a ok cover band. It is what it is! there is a reason for the comment button. If you like this knock off of the original enjoy!
Really shit talkers ....a Great!!! fuking cover...never heard of the band either but they get the nod;)the four straight break is perfect....Keep playing in front for more fans than this pric even knows..
Aren't you just the critic, lonestar. You weren't on stage doing it, and that's the difference between you and them. He sounded raw, and real. And any coukd sound "better" in a studio. Get a life outside your minf.
ARE YOU PEOPLE ALL DEAF??? The singer starts off great, with strong and beautiful high A's and even pushes to strained but exciting B, but where are all the high notes?? He didn't hit one high C on pitch in the choruses. All I hear is smokescreening by the backup singers and little piping falsettos out of him. How can ANYone say this vocal is even AS good as Chicago's. SORRY BOYS. Take this one down a half-step. Good luck playing it in A-flat minor.
Terry Kath would be proud to see this performance!
Love Chicago, love Umphrey's, love the cover! Thank you!
Great cover of one of my favorite Chicagos song...awesome vocals and horns!!! Such a hard song to play and so energetic!! Good job UM!!!! Superb!!
I've been luvin these guys for many years, they just keep getting better and better .....
and they were frickin great long time back .... rock on UM
Great light show. I bet these guys would be awesome in concert w/a good buzz going on.😇
😂❤
Myers never gets enough credit for singing. He's goddamn amazing at it.
😂❤🎉

+Erich Shoup It's incredible when you realize the drummer is the one on lead vocals for this one and he still holds the drums down!
Best version today comes from Leonid and Friends - outstanding vocals and instrumentation! ua-cam.com/video/9_torOTK5qc/v-deo.html
@@sythe77 These guys are ok but Leonid's drummer and particularly the lead guitarist Sergey are streets ahead in my view - I guess its a matter of taste.

"Can't comprehend music"? What an absurd and profoundly ignorant assertion.
Chill bro. At this level of musicianship it’s progressive!🤗
I absolutely love Widespread, Dead & Co, but I'm not sure anyone brings it show after show like UM! Amazing band!
No Too Many Jam Bands Lack imagination or talent. It Requires large doses of both every night Saw many Dead Shows back in the golden age Some THE EARTH MOVED! Other nights It just yawned or belched. The Greatest Chicago Song I've Ever Heard
why don't they let kris take lead vocals on more things? this is amazing
Jake's guitar solo at the end, especially starting about 4:15 into the song, is SICK in the best way. It channels Terry Kath yet layers on Jake's styles. Nicely done!
❤😂🎉
The harmonies on the chorus are killer.
The man's singing is just right! A talented and soulful individual for sure.
Damn the Chicago nerds in here must be really fun to go to a concert with.
One of the best covers I have ever heard...and one of my favorite songs of all time...win/win. :)
This is nice, worth sharing for sure.
Not even Chicago "after Terry" could pull this off this good!
This is why I love Umph's. They always try new ideas and songs and different things. Plus, they keep such a close connection with their fans, unlike any other band. They show a true appreciation for their fans
Love the lighting!
Jefferson we will miss you!
All these haters, this is live, not cleaned up. They just have fun with songs, and usually sound pretty damn good. Stop comparing fun covers to originals, I dont see you up there, lamos, these guys are great
Awesome cover... Kris' vocals are great!
such amazing cover! Love these guys!
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful!
This is incredible. One of my favorite songs in general and Im mad I missed you guys in Aspen. Was on a Ski trip there.
UMPH LOVE!!! what a great weekend.. that place smelt like skunk and chocalate fungus😵
Great harmonies
god damn.. crushed it!
Nice cover for sure. Another band that just blows away this song and others by Chicago is Leonid & Friends.
Do yourself a favor and listen to them.
oh my! absolutely sick!
So damn good!!!
I still can't believe They haven't permanently added a horn section.
Myers you are a machine
Awesome performance... I don't know HOW the guys on stage can play with that mind blowing lightshow going on though!! I don't know who choreographed the lights, but they're right up there with the musical performance.. both truly mind-blowing!! (Wish the horns were up in the mix a bit more... be my only nitpick)
best lights in the business, they are part of this music
Jefferson Waful is their light guy. He is amazing. There is a vid of him doing their song "Nothing too Fancy" and explaining how he programs the lights live etc. Very interesting.
we want the umph, gotta have that umph
The only thing that could make this better is if Stasik played it with an early Peter Cetera hair do. Lol
ALL ARE GREAT MUSICIANS AMAZING
which is every single genre ever
but for reals, go see these guys, I cant wait for their show Feb 18th in Detroit...I'm sensing a 3rd set in my future...get tickets through their website to avoid fees...

Myers is a beast!
Oh, and I agree about Terry.
I think Terry Kath would be proud!
preach it brother!
Yes
Nice!
I loved the original- and this is a very good cover.Oh, and note where tony Iommi found the "Killing yourself to live" riff!
Bravo ;)
UMPHREEEEYYYSSS
Ladies & gentleman the one they call simply “Myers”
Go Kris!
oh they will
Who is the LD on this show? Outstanding!!!
Jeff Waful
Most covers don't beat the originals. Jimi Hendrix is really the only one that comes to mind topping the Leaves and Bob Dylan.
OMG JEFFERSON WAFUL
Very well done cover of the original, the original lineup would be proud. Solo sounds like something Kath would do, except this is shorter. Sax and trumpet parts are reversed, which I found interesting.

There are currently 6 people out there who have viewed this video and it is certain they have no soul. I wish the best for them.
Kris Myers, the drummer, is singing the verses
God divided his voice in half and gave the other half to Kris.
Myers playing the drums is singing lead here
@Bryan8329 I love Umphreys, but how can you possibly say the harmonies are "killer"?
should I try to do some more?
Is there any band Jeff Coffin hasn't played with?
This is a great cover! But exactly who's singing live?
Meyers, the drummer.
Singing and drumming? Myers is one talented fellow.
plus he is playing the drums at the same time...
@zkrantz15 They aren't usually perfect, I'll grant you that but this is an exception.
Kris Myers on the drums.
Hah this is precious. Please sell your computer and/or all rights you would normally have to use one.
BRASS? oh, there it is, fhew
He's the same guy as apatriot4usa that was posting earlier in the comments. He knows exactly whay he's doing and you're just feeding him. Pay him no mind and he'll find something else to troll.
who is it that is singing?
Everyone saying the singing is bad, lemme see you get up on stage in front of thousands, and then rage the drums like he is, whilst singing.
Well, at least he's better than Jason Scheff. 😂
@PrivateIrishmayne I agree Kris has a great voice, but to say Brendan's voice is "harsh"? No way. Love me some Bayliss vox somethin' fierce.
@kokonutjohn horn ter at least!!
wow jake @ 2:25 is just filthy
awe snap first view and like
2 people are 26 or 7 to 5
Nice job I just hope the lead vovalist doesn't hurt himself :)
hear*
jake rips.
