Installing Gruven Billet Intake Parts on the R32

- Today we install Gruven billet parts to replace the worn out plastic bits on the intake manifold of our Mk4 R32. How hard could it possible be?
This procedure is the same for 12V and 24VR6 motors and Gruven makes the replacement parts for all of them to fix the intake changeover rod assembly, without having to replace your intake manifold. Here's where you can find the parts:

Hello Brendan, I also have an R32 and find this video very interesting since I had the same link fail on my 2005 Touareg V8 intake. On the V8 it happened because of deposit build-up around the flapper doors binding their movement enough to break the plastic link. VW provides no remedy for cleaning so a new intake manifold was required !$$$. Along with a rebuilt manifold I also installed the Gruven link, however I suspect now that the link is intended to be the weak link (sort of a fuse) that fails before anything else. Stress is now shifted to the vacuum solenoid that activates it and its rubber. I am no expert, others may know more about the issue but thanks for the videos! Love the R32.
Good to know! In my case the bushings were worn but still functional, and the rod ball end had worn out to the point that the vacuum connector repeatedly fell off it.

@@CliffjumperCarswere you getting any lean codes? Since the vacuum hose was already not connected. I have a mk5 r32 and the ball is not shifting, I also have a lean code on both banks… wondering if that hose or the diaphragm are pulling air inside.
That definitely seemed wrong to hit er in. That's lame the rod bushings aren't just new oem.
It felt very very wrong. But after having to install it & remove it and make adjustments and repeat that a few times, it went much easier.
In retrospect (and if budget was not an issue) I would have liked to have had a brand new OEM rod assembly for comparison to see how hard that would be to install
Personally would just buy a oe unit from vag whilst you can - the only things this kit dont come with are the bushings at the end of the rod which wear-
Probably a good idea to have one on hand. Will keep an eye on this to see how it does. The metal rod connector parts with the delrin bushings are definitely superior to the OE stuff, but then again that OE gear lasted a pretty long time before it needed replacing.
@@CliffjumperCars I purchased a used manifold chap with all the bits in - seems good value as the parts add up to quite a lot of money and also been plastic manifolds the captive threads can easily be damaged- bit like a corrado spoiler lol. You have to stock up now as we all know what its like owning a corrado and obsolete parts.
