I'm returning my one week old 840 ... and goint to RoamV2 from Boltv1. Wahoo is just too easy for me ... and Garmin on the other side is just too complicated with lots and lots of "features" which I figured - that I don't need - even I thought they would be nice to have. Thank you Shane for updating and explaining us what is comming out
Superb review Shane (as ever) ;-) What amazes me about the ELEMNT devices is just how much more has been added to them since the first release! Wahoo just keep innovating and improving the experience all the time! I'm sure there's a LOT more to come from them too :-)
Great report. Wahoo certainly look to be taking the "edge" off Garmin. It's Climbpro feature seems to be more advanced and being rolled out to existing units unlike Garmin. For the first time ever it really gives me pause to seriously consider changing my ride long allegiance from Garmin to Wahoo, - the equivalence of changing religions . Again, thanks
Wahoo are still light years ahead of Garmin. Since I made the switch a year ago, my enjoyment of cycling has returned after years of frustration with Garmin units that have “features” that are basically all broken and have remained broken in perpetuity
@@dvdsaiz not any time I’ve used it. It lags by up to 20 seconds, just like the power (9 second lag) and grade (12 to 14 seconds) data fields. If all you ride are steady gradient climbs it wouldn’t be as noticeable. But on climbs going 5, then 15, then false flat and back into 12% it’s clear as day that having climb pro active is worse than just riding on feel. In fact riding on feel far outweighs having an Edge feeding you nonsensical and utterly inaccurate data. I hope the equipment Garmin supply the US military is a bit more on point than their consumer level trash.
GREAT REVIEW!!! 👏👏👏 And kudos to Wahoo!!! 👏👏👏 The Garmin 1030+ has 32 GB of internal memory and impressive chipset. Despite this more than capable hardware, you'll never see Garmin giving this cycling computer its new Free Ride Climb Pro functionality because of its desire to entice users to upgrade to their 1040 computers. Considering the extravagant prices of these computers, how many people can really afford to do that? SMH. 🤦♂️
That look ahead elevation profile is a great feature… especially on roads you don’t know, it allows you to see what’s coming and prepare yourself. Super useful when descending on an MTB too, for example to let you know that after the next blind corner, there’s a massive climb and you should downshift in preparation.
How dare they use those Chevrons. Looks like a gorgeous day there Shane! Cool that you can move this Summit details to whichever page you'd like. That MTB climb looks like a wall not a climb 😆
Pro tip for riding up super steep climbs on a MTB 😅: sit right on the tip of the saddle, unlock the rear shock (or put it in the middle position if you have a 3-pos lockout) and drop the saddle down a little (maybe quarter to third of the dropper post travel). It may feel wierd at first, you will feel as if no power gets transfered to the rear wheel with the saddle low and suspension moving, but it allows you to get that extra traction to climb up just about any wall.
Looks like a great implementation of freeride climb detection. What I would love to see is data fields which provide averages for the length of the detected climb, ie average power, average heartrate etc. Of course I can press the lap button at the bottom of the climb but it would be great to have this automated so to speak.
This looks awesome, so much better than the Garmin. While I won't be dumping my 1040 just yet (still hoping on bug fixes, though, tbh, my patience is wearing very thin), I am becoming more and more convinced this will end up being the last Garmin unit I will have bought.
Amen, prob ditching my 1040 solar (someone is going to get a great deal) for the Roam 2. There is just 1 thing the Roam needs that Garmin has that is keeping me from switching- and Wahoo won't add it
I’m looking forward to the head to head comparison. Maybe then I’ll finally know the answer to my question from a week or so back in terms of what unit I can buy as my first head unit without feeling like I need to upgrade shortly after
All three work very similarly, as expected. The Hammerhead is now lagging a little with no base map overlay until you're on a climb and no 'look ahead'.

Great video, it will be a few years yet before I am going to upgrade my head unit but it is interesting to see what is out there. I have had my Edge 530 since June of 2021 and it does pretty much all I need it to do, so a few more years before I will really feel the need to upgrade.
Great review as ever Shane, really looking forward to the update in May. Another question; how did you get the colour shading to appear in your 3 second weighted power?
Oh no chevrons! Don't Wahoo know what happens when you use those? 😂 As always a really informative review keeping us up to date on new functionality. Keep up the great work.
great shane and 'about farkin time wahoo', I have both HH and Wahoo, climbs on the fly is a standout feature of HH. Question, have you tested it with no internet? Awesome video as always! Would love to have access to this on the Roam V1 - If only there was someway to attach external storage. My original Elemnt battery only started to die last summer, so bought a Roam V1 months before the V2 became available - Doh! Can't justify the change just yet...or can I ?
"%age to go" on a summit field would be ace. So I know if 500m to go means I know if I just started (e.g. 90% to go) or almost finished (10% to go). ymmv.
I'm looking forward to getting this feature on my bolt 2. It might be nice to see the path it's showing the elevation profile for on the map when not on a climb. Or does it just presume no turn offs?
Great review! Thank you. Do you know if there is any way to stop the wahoo "cutting" the climb in little climbs? I recently climbed a very well known mountain in my area which is around 13km at 8,5% and this feature would just show me little climbs sometimes less than 1km long. Basically it would stop every time there was a path joining the main road. Very annoying.
Nice video again Shane. Not have very many climbs nearby but this update puts the devices back up there again with the rest. I have a small question though. I noticed that the chevrons map page were colored according to the average grade of the climb I reckon. Did they also change the legibility of the chevrons while navigating (like colored with an outline instead of just solid black)?
As someone who purchased the more expensive Roam only 6 months before the Roam 2 came out but after the Bolt 2 was released, this news is really disappointing / underwhelming (to say the least)?

@gplama Does the summit screen pop up if you are running a workout? This is making me think about updating my V1 especially as the battery is starting to die.
Hi I am having a really hard time choosing between the Edge540 and RoamV2, this will be my first bike computer. I used to run so I have a Garmin watch, I use the watch to track my ride and my phone for navigation. But as my ride gets longer the phone battery cannot support the full length. So I want to get a bike computer. I am not good at tech so I just want a “set up once and use it forever” device, seems like Wahoo is simpler and easier to use. But my primary function with a bike computer is for navigation, seems like Garmin’s map is better. That's the dilemma…
Wahoo: There's a hidden screen recording feature. Saves to MP4. Hammerhead: Sideloaded AZ Screen recorder. Also saves to MP4. Garmin: Secret menu. Beta firmware feature only. Saves a BMP screenshot every 500ms. It's a pain in the arse... but it's better than nothing (or having to capture it with a camera).
Huh, great to see, given Wahoo financials suggest they're going under soon. (Hey, Wahoo, my "adventure GPS" [ROAM] still doesn't have a time to sunset/sunrise function --- come on)
Interesting! Well, I just bought Edge840 solar to join the Garmin ecosystem with my Varia715 and HRM pro plus. Nevertheless, I have my 2yr old Element Bolt 2 so still be getting this updates anyway! Still a win win for me I guessThanks for the vid Shane👍
Hopefully they have worked out the lag on climbs.. I used my wahoo the other day and it was terrible. Had practically finished the climb before it showed me on the graph going up, albeit it was short, but I wasn’t going fast, very hard headwind made me pace at snail mode 🫣🙄

Wahoo or garmin? Consider the ecosystems. Garmin connect is a pretty open platform while wahoo can be like subscription hell when analyzing ride data.
Does it work in Florida?
I'm likely as far away from Florida than anywhere on Earth. 🤷🏻♂️
@@gplama this is a very good thing, btw
That's a good thing, Shane. A friend son was recently arrested for having an illegal math book. 🤷♂🤦♂
Probably works just as well as it does in the Neitherlands. 😂
How do you capture the head unit images while riding? I picture on my head some camera or phone suspended over the head units.
@@gplama you have the inside hookup. Was wondering how you did all that.
Are Wahoo still doing any software development in house? Supposedly the majority of their software and firmware division was sacked recently.
Not something I’m across. The people I interact with are Wahoo employees.
I think wahoo should fix bugs first rather than adding new features.(Navigation, smartphone notification...)
Huh, great to see, given Wahoo financials suggest they're going under soon.
(Hey, Wahoo, my "adventure GPS" [ROAM] still doesn't have a time to sunset/sunrise function --- come on)
Am I the only one who doesn't want to see any suffering ahead? 🤣
Finally. Wahoo has been far behind lately…
You have to be a payed influencer to be wowed by this.
Or someone who rides bikes and likes tech. And it’d be “paid” if you want to level up when having a crack.
Was this with a planned route?
@@gplama No it’s my commute route with mini hills, highest being 200m. My Garmin 830 tracks slightly better.
I’m guessing that’s where I’m going wrong, expecting better performance on the fly :/
